Personal Coffeemaker

My husband and I like to travel with our own coffee makings, and that includes the coffee maker itself. While many motels do offer in-room coffee makers these days, more often than not you have to go beg for decaf or at least enough for 2 big cups.

Our old travel appliance has started to leak, so we have begun to shop for its replacement. We are looking now for a coffeemaker that will brew directly into our commuter mugs. Locally, we have only found the kind that take the Keurig cups. Thanks, but those blasted things take up so much space and they are expensive.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a personal coffee brewer?

I did find one through Amazon, that looks likely. If this one is any good, can it take other types of commuter mugs as well as the one included with it?

Sure, it will take other commuter mugs, but only if they are the type shown in the photo - the short squat ones. Unfortunately, DH and my mugs are a different style, the taller thinner ones. If your mugs are like ours, you would be better off with one of these:

Our personal favorite is the one from Gevalia. We have worn out two already. Each lasted several years. And we didn't use them at all while traveling, but used them every day to get us out the door to work.

Donna I have a Black and Decker one cup coffee maker and I really like it. It will not take a travel mug and is made for a cup. It will only take a coffee cup full of water. It has it's own reusable coffee filter that is easy clean up. Bad side it does not give you real hot coffee but that works for me. I use one heaping teaspoon per cup. hope this info helps Patty

What are your volume preferences. Do you need to make several cups and keep them warm, or would one cup be perfect if it was also very strong, very hot, and very good? I've had a ton of coffee makers over the years, but I no longer brew in volume. MichaelP is dead on when he says that taste is subjective and there is no universal best... but this is what I like: The entire contents from my Bialetti Brikka (not to be confused with the Moka, which looks similar, but brews very differently) is perfect. I add a little sugar and half and half to a cup. Froth it up a little, pour the beautiful stove top espresso with crema into the frothed milk the moment it stops making that weird rocket ship noise. Some people prefer it without the cream and sugar, in which case it's very hot and frothy. I recently served some to a brunch guest who is accustomed to normal coffee maker coffee and he liked it and confessed that it gave him a bit of a buzz. It was not surprising. The four servings that the maker makes only partially fills a normal American coffee cup... but it takes three heaping scoops of good dark roast coffee to make.

I do not have one of these, nor any other built in "small appliances" in my own kitchen, but I do have some experience from growing up and/or living with similar in older kitchens. My parents have a built-in Nutone food center. The blender, a meat grinder, other attachments fit on a motor that is mounted in a stainless steel area on the countertop. You remove a little cap and set in the attachment. and there is a control knob set in the counter too. Very cool, except the metal piece that runs the appliance "rounded off" over the years and no longer turns the blades of the blender. Great idea, hard to service and irreversible placement in the counter. Likewise a built in paper towel holder that held 60s size towel rolls but by the late seventies they were too fat. I have been in kitchens with built in toasters, built in radios, built in ironing centers, etc none of which worked anymore and/or were not really in the right place. Just think very carefully before you decide the put in an appliance that tends to need to be replaced and can normally be replaced easily and cheaply by something off teh shelf. Spending several hundred dollars while you are in the midst of spending $30K may not seem like much but if something happens and you can get a Mr Coffee at Walmart for $29.99 when something happens to your built in, you may end up in a similar situation.

I will go along with others - we decided against the all-in-ones because of the all-too-often occurrence of burning out one appliance and still having the other one work. (It reeked of some of the things our cars have that are integrated these days, causing you to replace two items when only one "went".) We bought a Cuisinart Grind Central, about $26 from the military exchange. It's got a stainless steel housing, the grinder cup is removable (and can be washed in the DW), and the plastic cover can also be washed in the DW. It's really EASY to use. Problems - small ones only - the cord storage is a pain in the neck to use - it's rather noisy (but I have yet to find a really QUIET one under $50) - and don't use the grinder cup's measure lines unless you like your coffee like mud, use a coffee measure! As for a coffeemaker - we love the Bunn that we bought. We seem to go through coffeemakers every 7-8 years, so we're on our 2nd Bunn. If something happens to this one, we'd probably buy another one - only in black to match the kitchen! DonnaR/CA

I agree money and how to handle it and also credit cards too and put away for that rainy day plus for future too. Yes, laundry how to do it, cook skills how to make simple meals at least. How to maintain car and where to take it in wherever they go to school. Budgeting and not buying everything in sight and have those zillion tags and not wear or use. How to clean, someone mentioned one time a gal didn't know how to sweep so teach those things. How to keep yourself safe and maybe see about they go to classes to protect themselves when out in the world alone. Teach about drinking, guys and date rapes, and stuff that they can put in drinks and do not ever leave your drink alone, hang onto it and if you do slip away from it, get another fresh one. So in numbers anywhere, don't go alone. What to so when sick, things to take for what, etc. as many moms rush down and care for them or they rush home. Always check your car before getting into it to make sure no one is inside or can pop inside when you unlock it. How to fill it up with gas, laugh but many don't do it. Chop up all cards except for one for emergencies and keep it only for emergencies. Teach about future costs of when you finish schooling and you say I am going to travel, the costs and what that involves. Buying your own place or even renting your own place or sharing, what you look for in roommates. What costs are you looking at, furniture and rent, food, medical, dentist, clothing, all those things of life. How to put away for all that and pay out monthly as they come along. Teach about what to get in medical insurances,etc. How to do interviews, references,etc. Make sure they have flip flops for school for the washroom so they don't pick up athlete foot,etc. I have heard a must to wear in the washrooms. Watch your surroundings at all times. kathy

I worked at a pizza restaurant where my boss was absolutely clueless and replaced our giant coffee maker with a keurig personal brewer. I don't know what he was thinking! My heart would sink every time I had more than 3 orders of coffee at a time. But it worked great for just one.

I have one I got free from Gevalia that has two travel mugs included, so you can make one cup of decaf and one of regular. I drink regular and Elery drinks decaf once in a while.

It works fine, but took some use to figure out how much ground coffee makes one cup to my liking.

Those French Press pots from Bodum are really great for a quick cup BUT you'll need a source for hot water to make the coffee. I took with me on our last trip an old Percolator I got for a $1 at a garage sale and that worked great!

I got this one free when I bought a shipment of coffee, then promptly cancelled the coffee subscription. I don't think their coffee is all that great and I was startled when I saw the price to just buy the coffee maker!

Yep, Annie, that's the one we love. Yes, the coffee is expensive. But it's smooth. So smooth, that no matter how much grounds we use, we just can't get it strong enough to suit us. So, we're bad. We get the coffeemaker and the first shipment of coffee, then cancel. Then we mix those beans with our preferred beans and use them up that way.

Just to think outside the box: if you like strong hot coffee, you might consider using a $10 filter cone like this, brewing into a nissan thermos:

You can buy a high quality nissan thermos of whatever an appropriate volume is you need, and they keep stuff hot a long time. They make them in different sizes. Here's one that's 61 oz:

Of course, you'd still need something to boil water with, and you'd need to pour the coffee into your travel mugs, but you'd have a lot of hot coffee throughout the day. More gadgets, but more flexibility.

Hamilton Beach makes a 12 cup coffee maker that empties directly into your commuter mug. It is the HB 12 cup Brewstation Deluxe coffeemaker. I don't use HB small appliances but this seems to be what you are looking for. NancyLouise

After reading everyone's posts, we ended up with the Hamilton Beach 6 cup coffeemaker. It's due to arrive any time (mail ordered it through Amazon; nobody around here seemed to carry it).

Now hubby loves kuerig you know what I mean not sure of spelling ,he loves it,Days I have dialysis I make a pot from the percalator???Days I dont he makes it on th personal kuerig?? I like the old percalator pot,I like the gevalia coffee mm
