I love it! Our little grandsons become enthusiastic when we do any gardening. Unfortunately they don't eat fresh tomatoes willingly! Give yours a hug from me!

Beau doesn't eat tomatoes unless he personally has harvested them from my plants.
Lily loves to eat basil leaves from the garden but got in trouble (actually mommy blamed me) when she ate basil from the garden at Disney World.

You should grow some lettuce for him to have with the tomatoes! If you have a shady spot, you can grow it there in the summer. I ate a lot of salads when I was six and seven years old - partly because I liked to eat cold food when it was hot in Texas. We grew tomatoes, okra, corn, and potatoes - not sure why we grew potatoes, but I loved digging them up as a child because I never knew what I was going to find. For me, it was like finding little treasures - your grandson may like that as well. It must be fun gardening with him.

Lars, The chastising came from mommy..."she can't just pull leaves from anywhere and eat them!"
I responded that Lily (4 years old at the time) identified them as basil so she knew what they were.

Mustangs, that's a cute story, too. Luckily, Disney uses organic methods I believe, so no worries there.

Lettuce bolts here in the heat, so sadly, no lettuce and tomato dishes for us. It's worth a try, I guess, but it gets really bitter really fast in the heat.

Gardening with him is a lot of fun. His favorite part, aside from eating the tomatoes, is watering.

Try growing a Batavian type lettuce such as Nevada. They do much better in heat than other types.

Bud loves the SunGold tomatoes, eats them by the handful as fast as I can grow them. Why don't they like the big ones as well, I wonder?

Makayla says that her goal this year is to taste every single thing I'm growing in the garden. I think I'll overlook the habaneros but I'm holding her to the celeriac and the kohlrabi! (grin)

Sungolds are delicious, I agree with Bud.

I do grow lettuce and several other cool season crops all winter long. I'll look for that variety. Thanks for the suggestion.

For our grand children, the favorites for picking and eating on the spot are the blueberries followed by the peas, blackberries and apricots. The littlest one, 1 1/2 year old, is just learning to hunt for the blue (ripe) blueberries. DH took her to the plants one day and the next day she headed straight to them.

The middle one will only eat the fresh ones off the plant, he turns up his nose at store bought.

I don't blame him, Cloud Swift. I hope to take my grandson blueberry picking this summer. It's about that time to do it. We can't grow them here, as our soil is too alkaline, but 80 miles east of us is prime blueberry growing, and there are several pick-your-own farms.

Do you grow thornless blackberries, or are you grandkids totally brave?

Thornless - the grandkids might be brave enough, but we don't want to cope with the thorns.
