Actually, venting is your answer! Ventilation hood, that is. I turn on my vent hood - low - every time I have my range on, burners or oven, and it draws all all the heat and fumes. My DH and I were just remarking the other day while we were stir-frying how we could have all the burners on and a couple on high heat and able to stand right next to the range without breaking a sweat. The oven vents out the top, so it stays pretty cool, too. The only time we go to vent-high is when we're blackening and creating a lot of smoke. We have a KA wall oven, that vents out the front, and the loud cooling fan does seem to run a long time after we've shut down, but it sure works because it's not hot at all. The range and wall ovens are directly across from each other in the middle of the kitchen, so if they ran hot, we'd be hot, but with the venting, they're fine. The west-facing quadruple-sliding doors are what make the A/C run!

Everyone is invited to come to my house on June 21 for our 5th anniversary party! Finished the colonoscopy this morning, and then learned that the plumber is still out of town and unavailable, and so we hired a different one, as we do not want to wait another week without a kitchen sink. Enough is enough! It is probably costing us a bit more for the new plumber (the first one never gave us a written quote or contract, but he's two doors down from us), but I feel that he is doing a competent job. After not having a sink for 10 days and then having a colonoscopy, my patience for waiting had run out! I will be very happy to be able to cook again this evening, even though we are having a terrible heat spell. I am not up for shopping, but I don't think we need anything, and I still have all the frozen leftovers that we never ate. Saturday we installed my new bathroom faucet (to go with the new shower controls), and so we had to go to Bouget Brothers in Santa Monica to find a brass coupling (Afterwards we had lunch on Sawtelle at a new Vietnamese restaurant). We first went to B&B Hardware in Mar Vista, but they are going out of business and are not restocking and were out of what we wanted. I am sad to see B&B go - when I lived in Culver City and Venice (from 1989-2009) I went there a lot and seldom bothered to go to Home Depot. Now, we are only a mile from a HD and go there a lot, but they did not have brass couplings, and I would not settle for galvanized steel. Here's a picture of the bathtub faucet:

I was in the bay area for 60 years. Yes, it is a great place to be outdoors. Now that I am elsewhere with super hot (or cold) days with outrageous humidity (I never had heard the term 'dew point' until we moved; I realize I should have taken more advantage of the beautiful weather. I did lots of BBQ on a classic char-broil charcoal grill. I don't think it really matters what you get. I might suggest that you try COSTCO and see what they have. However, you are also mainly planning for a regular cooking surface as well, and then perhaps a third unit for the wok. I am no expert on wok cooking, but having heard here that one is supposed to use really high heat, perhaps you could incorporate a canning or turkey fryer base into your setup. I think your major unusual item would be a two burner cooktop. I vaguely recall a couple outdoor brunches where a service company was cooking crepes on portable gas cooktops. They were probably stainless steel boxes, but I don't really recall. I expect you would find them in a restaurant supply store. Sunset Magazine used to feature your desired setup in one way or another on occasion. I guess they are gone now but copies are probably on line or in the library.

I saw a thread referring to the same article, very recently. I read it with interest. Obviously totally open plan with no rooms at all is the most ancient one known to humanity)) I think -many plans can work-will depend on a house itself, and needs of a family. I grew up with separate rooms. Kitchens were all eat ins, with dining table often in the living room, used for gatherings and occasions. Then it was different variants on different plans-say closed off kitchen, but open greater room (in my childhood homes, all rooms had doors. not necessarily closed unless nighttime, but they all had doors). Or-totally open plan. Or-plan that's partially open. Say the kitchen is not eat in anymore but you can't see it from entrance or living. But say it is connected to the dining or/and the family I myself prefer semi-open plans..and more intimate spaces, along more gathering ones, with possibility of versatile use. I don't like seeing a kitchen from an entrance, and highly prefer not to see it from the living. And I prefer to have a TV somewhere when I/others can watch it in peace, without someone using a blender right next to it, or preparing for SATs or GREs or whatever, and needing his own piece and quiet. So i like separation between living/dining-and, say, family room/library. Makes difference, even without doors-having different spaces carved, relationship between them, some sense of travel too..every destination is a bit different. But of course now I'm more in a position to choose, which I didn't have when younger. I was always sensitive to good, making sense layout vs bad one, but also making the best of what we had. Now I'm much more discerning because I can be. I won't pay whatever they ask here to pay for totally open concept poorly considered and done (most new builds). No, I'd look for something that works for our family in this stage of our lives(which I was lucky to do past couple times..last time had to enclose the kitchen a bit-I think they opened it up for resale-very wrong move, in our house).
