what to do with nearly bad half & half?

Big container of this milk was a wee bit gone to eat with my cereal this morning. Any suggestions other than to toss it?

The term 'apple pomace' was brought up from the Cornell site. Under that listing, find Apple Processing Sludge with a C:N ratio of 7. That is very far from the 48:1 listing for Apple Pomace. Fresh or recently fallen apples might be closer to the Apple Processing Sludge value. Might not matter much if the apples were dug into the ground in a trench. But may stink if one assumes no 'brown' ingredients like leaves are needed in a above-ground compost pile. I noticed when first starting to use the Cornell On-Farm list of C:N numbers, that I and others focused too much on just one value. Many times the material I used did not match up with just one Cornell number, but was between several widely varying materials. Even tree leaves can be misleading. Hardly ever does a listing for a particular tree leaf say when it was measured. So when I let the fallen sweet gum leaves turn brown on the ground before using them, they do not make for a very quick heating mix. When I gather recent fallen leaves of just oak, maple and sweet gum, I can get a pile with a core temp of 135F in a few days.

I think the pension status plays into this. DH is turning 62. His pension, plus his social security, plus my SS, plus a little annuity my aunt left me add up to MORE than he's making at his job. Bottom line is he cannot afford to keep working at his job--it's idiotic to.( Especially consiering the cost of his commute to work is $75/week) He can retire, make the same amount AND get a little parttime job (if he wants one) closer to home, and make an additional $14,000. He's just a blue collar guy--not a CEO of a company nor a univesity president or anything, but we simply cannot afford for him to keep working. His retirement package inclues fully paid health insurance until age 66, and a good dental plan that costs under $6/month for both of us. So, to answer that poll, guess we're folks who are retiring because we can't afford to keep working--was there a category for that?

If what you got was an estimate, you're probably out of luck, because they didn't commit to the $3800 price tag in the first place; it was just an educated guess. If it was a firm quote, however, you could tell them that if it's only $600 more to break down the top of the chimney and rebuild it like new, that you'd prefer to stick with the original agreement. If you're right that there's a lot more than $600 worth of work remaining, they might suddenly change their tune.

Use half of the Half & Half, if you are OK then use the other half. But if you feel kind of half and not whole, then toss the other half of Half & Half.

I would pour it down the sink. If it isn't good enough to use on your cereal, I wouldn't use it at all.

I agree with Ann. Toss it. Yes, yogurt and kefir kind of "sour" the milk, but even those things are best made with fresh milk. It's a different kind of sour. A few weeks ago I made my kefir as usual and didn't realize the milk had gone bad until I used some of the milk for another preparation. My kefir had a kind of a soapy taste. If it ain't good enough something, it ain't good enough for ANYTHING.

There is a difference between "sour" milk and "spoiled" milk. Milk past its prime is "spoiled". Toss it.

I'm not sure I understand "a wee bit gone", do you mean it's a wee bit OFF? Or do you mean that you've only drank a wee bit of it? I'm going to assume that you mean it's just slightly OFF and if that is what you mean then throw it away. I think bad milk is supposed to be good for a septic system so if you have one, then pour it down the drain. But if it still tastes good you could freeze it, I would use ice cube trays.

I read that with today's processing methods, milk products that are 'off' are not sour, they are rotten. Pitch it.
