How can you handle the smell?

We had to delay Easter dinner due to health reasons so am cooking the Prime Rib today. Its only been in the oven for an hour and already I am going crazy with the smell............................how do you stop your selves from running to the oven and grabbing the bone to rip off a hunk. I feel like a hungry wolf waiting to gnaw on my prize.

CL, so glad that you are enjoying your Easter dinner today and hoping the health issues are not serious.

I am exactly the opposite . By the time I have prepared and cooked dinner I'm very often uninterested in eating it. I'm totally turned off.

I wish it wasn't that way but almost always that is how I feel......bummer.

Chase, I'm the same as you. I never eat a holiday dinner that I've cooked. I lose my appetite whenever confronted with large quantities of food. It will also happen when in a restaurant and serving sizes are gigantic...I see the plate and literally can't eat a bite.

Enjoy that prime rib, CL! I also hope the health issues were not serious and have gone away.

As for that "swamp Basket oak" I can never seem to get ANY tree to grow there. It's RIGHT on the property line, and I can't help but think that maybe the neighbors are killing these trees. That Swamp Basket oak just died, it hadn't put on any growth for about 3 years, then it just withered away to nothing. Really, I've tried 3 different species of trees there, and NONE of them have lived. I tried to grow 2 different oaks And a Silver Maple, which I only planted because the neighbors had planted a row of them MANY YEARS earlier, and their trees had been growing well for many years. I have hated their Silver Maples, they drop branches and send out seedpods all through out my yard, but, I did like there to be a consistent row of the same trees. But, for some reason all of those new Silver Maples I had stupidly planted ( really just 3 seedlings) they all seemed to die for (who knows) some reason, I'm really glad they died, I don't really like Silver Maple trees. But, anyway, I will be trying a Sycamore again in my yard. The neighbor who has the Sycamore tree that I had planted years ago, when it was my property, his Sycamore had shed seed far enough into my yard to where I have a Sycamore baby (about 20 feet away from his mama tree) and so I'll be digging up this small seedling, and planting it in the place that I had once had a small Sycamore seedling years ago, but, the seedling died, and I had then planted a Chinkapin oak seedling there, but, THAT tree didn't grow well there. I know that it's likely this Sycamore seedling will likely not do well either, but, I have gotten this Sycamore seedling for free, and this is the place that I want a Sycamore tree to grow, so I really am hoping that once that I dump a good bit of natural fertilizer, and some new soil, which is from my pots that I had tried to grow some flower seeds in, maybe I could get a Sycamore tree to grow there. I also think, I need to spread some Garden sulfer there because we had buried a couple of horses and dogs there, and I seem to remember that LIME was used because my parents were told that you need to spread lime when you bury an animal. Our soil has been deemed PH 7 so nuetral, but, if you add lime where pets, some being big like Horses, and we'd had to bury at least 3 horses on my current property, so maybe there is Lime under the soil. But, really, if you haven't had to bury an animal, or know of there being Lime added to your soil, I would just say that if you smell something foul around your Plane tree or Sycamore tree, just post here and maybe we can figure out where and when these foul smells take place.

if you ever have a fridge that has a bad odor in it use it in there, I use it straight on a paper towel and wipe down the surfaces and put a cup with some and some water in there for a few days. My family in Louisiana had some problems due to power outages during the Hurricanes and I brought Odoban down there to them for the clean ups, especially since it kills mold and mold spores and mildew. Even in shoes that stink put some on a paper towel and shove it into the shoe and leave it there. My husband had some tennis shoes that had the fabric web stuff on the sides and he left them outside well someones cat sprayed them, OMG he did not know and put them on and we got in the car to go somewhere we had to stop the car and bail out. Finally figured out it was his shoes! I soaked them in odoban and ran them in the washer with odoban then stuffed them with soaked paper towels. I really thought I was going to have to throw those shoes away but nope it fixed them. I swear I find new things to do with it all the time. Too bad you can not find it locally, I have always got mine at Sams, the last jug I got had the spray bottle full that came along with it for the same regular price which was nice because I had used one of my old cleaner bottles to mix my odoban spray in and used a sharpie to label it LOL

How far in advance can you make up soap & still have it smell?

Jill, To some degree it does depend on the oils, also where/how stored. I make my soap, wrap it then store in ziploc bags, 1 scent/bag, & all the zip top bags in a banana box from the grocery store. (I know there are better methods of storage, BUT the banana box is great for carrying in & out of shows, & hold up to lots of weight (150+ bars of soap). The samples you got were fresh made, but if i sent you any full size bars prior to the samples, they were poured in early november. As long as they are well scented & stored well, 6 weeks+ prior should do fine, possibly longer. Remember-we get used to the smell, but if you send/give them to someone they will think they smell great. Hazel

Chase -health issues not too serious Thanks. If I had that I think i'd be a lot skinnier. LOL

tricia - I was typing as you posted only 1 month left of this dang medicine and hopefully I won't have these issues again.

OMG, I'm the same "no appetite after cooking large". At Christmas this year my nephews asked "Aunt Cathy, why don't you ever eat at the parties?". I'm sure my guests wonder why I'm overweight.

So, to answer the OQ, I the aroma and a nibble of the horseradish herb crust does me fine.

I have a very small family where I live most live 12 hours away so I normally only cook for 2 or 3 but leftovers for days. Dinner is done and I was unable to wait for the roast to finish before I lopped off a bit..............................to taste you know.

LOL, CLBlakey, that's how Elery is, he has to have that taste, he cannot wait.

I'm in the group that doesn't want to eat it after I've spent a couple of days cooking it. By the time dinner rolls around, I've completely lost my appetite. That's fine, I spend my time taking pictures and playing with the grandkids, I can eat any time!

I am uninterested in eating dinners that take a lot of effort to cook too-generally when entertaining.
However, it is usually because I sample everything during the process!

I have a chicken roasting right now and I'll need to gnaw on a wing while it's resting. You have to make sure it tastes ok, don't you?

I was thinking maybe sous vide might be the way for me to go cooking in a bag in water must tame those glorious smells. Hubby laughed at me today and said "some women buy clothes others jewelry but you are happy with a good roast" tis so true. I am still full from supper yet the house still smells so good I don't know if I will be able to sleep. And don't get me started about fresh baked bread..................................

LOL! I was just going to say. You are correct, with sous vide there is 0 smell in the house.

My 4.5 cubic foot smoker is an indoor smoker, it has practically no smell either.

The aroma of food gets me more than the sight of it. Once I smell it, I've got to have it. Maybe that's why we lose our appetites when our noses are stuffed.

That could be the new diet fad! Nose plugs.

I don't think I can make overnight food in the crock pot anymore. Last time I made chicken broth that way, my normally placid dogs were up half the night whining and scratching the side of my bed!

Speaking of dogs, my mutt has a fairly normal amount of tail wagging when I cook something good. But when I cook lamb, she goes absolutely nuts, jumping up and down.

Guess it's in the DNA to salivate over gamy stuff.

The one aroma I can't resist is star anise. I often use it in a cooking sauce for short ribs or pork shoulder and always seem to end up taking the pan out of the oven for a sample.

I try to stay away from planning meals that are so fatiguing to make that I don't enjoy eating them. I also don't like being a guest at a dinner or party where the host(ess) is so frazzed out by making every single item "gourmet" or totally from scratch that he/she can't even carry on a conversation.

I also, after smelling something cooking all day, feel as though I am "full" from the smell. Now something that does not take long to cook, I am all over that!

My dog cries the whole time while the chicken is cooking..............Back to bread once I said it I could not stop thinking about it. Who has ever picked up a fresh warm slice and held it to their face and inhaled deeply. Funny there are men in white coats coming up my driveway.
