I have just about completed Dearie, a recent J Child biography. It was full of stuff I didn't know and a very good read. Both of the Child books should be really interesting.

That is quite a find, Jasdip! I used to scour garage sales and second hand stores in search of interesting cookbooks. Problem is, they ALL looked interesting. Now I have hundreds of cookbooks that I neither use, not want to share bookshelf space with. I've sold some on ebay, but at this point, I just wish someone would cart them away, LOL.

LOL Donna. I too gravitate to yard sales and Kijiji for cookbooks. Kijiji is still too expensive, I want someone's cast-offs dirt cheap.

I scour the web, love this forum obviously, and recipes come into my mailbox. I save them or write them out. Yet I still love cookbooks, go figure.

I will give books that I never use to this sale next year (so that I can make room for the ones that I'll buy!) LOL

I have used 'The French Chef Cookbook' and found it informative. Bear in mind how it came about. American cooking was pretty desolate in the fifties and early sixties; Julia started these programs on PBS in 1963. Some of the recipes are pretty simple, but they all demonstrate some concept. Her instructions are direct and always have some reasoning behind them. So if she says to dry meat with a paper towel before cooking, it's because without drying it the meat will steam rather than brown.

If you are a Julia junkie, and have decent internet speed, you can find just about all of those programs online through Amazon Prime. While we 21st century cooks are talking about high tech stoves and ultra expensive cookware, it's interesting to watch Ms. Child make fantastic food using what appears to be ordinary cookware and (horrors!) an electric coil-top stove. It ain't the tool, it's the artisan. It's also fun to see the sponsors--S&H Green Stamps is one!

Many of the episodes are also available on YouTube. The one at the link demonstrates how to roast a chicken. This is how I learned to truss a chicken. (She starts the trussing process around 12:20 into the program)

Our city has a similar sale in August every year. I went the first year and enjoyed it so much. Went last year and I could not even get in the door - wall to wall people, so I left.

When I moved I had to pare down my collection to 600 cookbooks. If you are ever in my neighborhood, come on by and help yourself. I need to get rid of them while cooks are still consulting hard copy.

People will always read hard copy books. There was just a big long thread on cookbooks at one of my favorite discussion forums and pretty much everyone agreed, they love their paper cookbooks and will not ever part with them. I think there's too much misinformation on the web, Betty never steered me wrong! :)

Sometimes someone on Freecycle will get rid of their cookbooks. Too often someone will use just 1 recipe in the whole cookbook, and will get rid of some.

I like both....hard-copy and online; especially here, where they are tried and true recipes.

I wish I knew someone personally or at least local, who was paring down their collections, like you, Mustangs and Donna.

I'm heading for our largest fund raiser garage sale in our area in a couple hours, it goes for three days and yesterday it rained all day so I'm thinking maybe it didn't do as much business and there will still be some good "finds"! I'll be searching the books!

Nice find! I have to go through all the book donations that come through the library, so guess who gets first dibs on anything going to the book sale? It's a hard job, but somebody's gotta do it. Just scored an old Farm Journal canning book. And I still prowl thrift stores and yard sales for cookbooks. It's a disease.

I've been cataloging my cookbooks on Librarything so I can keep track....I was grabbing too many duplicates, hehe.

DD and I were in the library the other day, we missed their book sale last weekend by about 15 min, but they had some handmade aprons ($12, I can make them for less than that - though I just got a cute Easter bunny one for her from Target for $2.39) and cookbooks on a table by the door. I got Farm Journal's Cookies for $2 - she says we have to make some next weekend while the guys are off camping. Of course she had me watch Martha (Stewart) Bakes today, there were some good cookies on that show too. And I need to lose 25 lbs!

I got inspired while looking at that Jane Butel book. I noticed that it has a lot of recipes for chili sauces, and this made me look at my African cookbook, which inspired me to cook okra.

It's nice when you get to see cookbooks before buying them. I already have so many recipes for chili sauces that I do not need any more of them, but I might like the Jane Butel book anyway. Let us know if you make any recipes from it!

Wow, that is a great find. I just donated a couple of big boxes of cookbooks to the library for their used book sale and I still have way too many to admit. Plus all of Elery's, LOL. I love cookbooks and I agree, I think we'll always use them. I do use the internet too, but love my cookbooks. And Makayla, who is 10, loves them too, and wants to make her own containing her favorite recipes. So, another generation, using cookbooks. I love it.

Elery would love that chili cookbook, but I'd be too scared to read it, LOL.
