Ham in the Crock Pot?

Do you think I could cook the spiral ham in a crock pot? It's already cooked, just needs to be hot for dinner. I was thinking it wouldn't heat up the house, and it wouldn't dry out. It comes with the packet of sauce for over, and I have a can of pineapple slices. Then I can use the oven for potato casserole.

What do you all think? I am trying to make it as easy as possible for myself tomorrow. I have a whole house to clean today and quiche to make, etc.

I did that one year. Works fine. I needed the oven for other things at Thanksgiving.

I've cooked ham exactly once but can say everyone, including me, raved. This recipe is not from the internet, but rather from the world wide web: City Ham Recipe courtesy Alton Brown 1 city style (brined) ham, hock end 1/4 cup brown mustard 2 cups dark brown sugar 1-ounce bourbon (poured into a spritz bottle) 2 cups crushed ginger snap cookies Heat oven to 250 degrees F. Remove ham from bag, rinse and drain thoroughly. Place ham, cut side down, in a roasting pan. Using a small paring knife or clean utility knife set to the smallest blade setting, score the ham from bottom to top, spiraling clockwise as you cut. (If you're using a paring knife, be careful to only cut through the skin and first few layers of fat). Rotate the ham after each cut so that the scores are no more than 2-inches across. Once you've made it all the way around, move the knife to the other hand and repeat, spiraling counter clockwise. The aim is to create a diamond pattern all over the ham. (Don't worry too much about precision here.) Tent the ham with heavy duty foil, insert a thermometer, and cook for 3 to 4 hours or until the internal temperature at the deepest part of the meat registers 130 degrees F. Remove and use tongs to pull away the diamonds of skin and any sheets of fat that come off with them. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Dab dry with paper towels, then brush on a liberal coat of mustard, using either a basting brush or a clean paint brush (clean as in never-touched paint). Sprinkle on brown sugar, packing loosely as you go until the ham is coated. Spritz this layer lightly with bourbon, then loosely pack on as much of the crushed cookies as you can. Insert the thermometer (don't use the old hole) and return to the oven (uncovered). Cook until interior temperature reaches 140 degrees F, approximately 1 hour. Wonderful suggestions. But the leftovers I was anticipating, well you see, we've been eating them. I'm not sure how much is left on there! But I'm worried, I think I have heard that you should get the meat off the bone as soon as possible. I WILL deal with it tonight. Anyway, next time I do this I will have to get a bigger ham and just learn how to do it in the oven (or micro-convec like Ma) so we don't eat it all before I can get some frozen. It seems like many recipes call for cubes of ham. I saw some in the store packaged as cubes - looked very tempting and convenient but so expensive as compared to just doing a whole one.

Here's one I made this week... I didn't use the crock pot however since I had leftover roasted chicken which I used. I just mixed all the ingredients listed (except the noodles) and put in the oven for 30 minutes. Wonderful comfort food! I'll be making this again soon! Slow Cooker Chicken Stroganoff Ingredients 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cubed 1/8 cup margarine 1 (.7 ounce) package dry Italian-style salad dressing mix 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup Directions Put chicken, margarine and dressing mix in slow cooker; mix together and cook on low for 5 to 6 hours. Add cream cheese and soup, mix together and cook on high for another 1/2 hour or until heated through and warm. Pour over cooked egg noodles. Well, I decided to just put the beans in without quick-soaking them and also cut up the little cottage ham and added that at the same time. Did that around 9:45am. and set the crock pot on high and it's 1:36pm. here now. They seem to be cooking alright, smells good in here. I've had to add water several times already, just a cup or so at a time. They are absorbing alot of water. Outside caulking the old siding of the little barn and come in every so often to check on them. I might have them for supper by 6pm but not sure. Thanks everyone!

I don't like ham in a crock pot....never cooked one that way but have eaten it....over cooked and baconey.
Why can't you use the oven for potatoes
And the ham?

I just heated it through, it didn't spend a lot of time in the crock pot. I timed it to serve promptly.

I'll let you know....
Mine is in there now. However, it's not a spiral, it's a picnic from the half hog we bought. I made my own wide slices across it.

I used a "packet" glaze left over from some other ham where I didn't need it.
I put just a dribble of water in the bottom of the crockpot, placed the ham in, drizzled the glaze over it working into the slices. I've basted with the juices a couple of times.

I put it in at noon, we're eating at 6pm tonight! It's been on low the whole time.
It looks (and SMELLS) great right now (4pm).

I'll be roasting sweet potatoes in the oven and boiling asparagus on the stove top. Rolls are made, bean salad is made, eggs are deviled. Table is set.

Yup, I'm as ready as I can be for now! There's only going to 5 of us, and very casual, but still...........I hate remembering something at the last minute that throws my rythym off at final prep time!

I've done mine in the crockpot too. A fully cooked spiral sliced ham would only get a couple of hours because you only need to heat it through, it doesn't need to be cooked more. An especially big one would need more time, of course.

I've cooked my homegrown hams for 6 hours in the crockpot and they are nicely moist and tender. 8 hours is too long, it doesn't dry out but it falls apart.

I have seen a couple of recipes on allrecipes.com for doing this also. I think its a great idea. Time and oven saving for you.

OK, update!! Mine was in for almost exactly 6 hours and it was a little too long. Next time I would only do 3-4 hours. It did dry out a little.
Still, it was very good and nobody complained! LOL

I think part of the problem is how hot these newer crockpots cook...even on Low.

When I did it I just left it long enough to warm completely through and take on the flavor of the glaze which was a mix of honey, orange juice and zest, and dijon. I might have added some brown sugar, do not recall. (I wing these things.) It was not a spiral cut ham but a smallish uncut boneless ham. I have an old crock pot. It was maybe 2-3 hours on high.

Well it turns out as large as my crock pot is, it wasn't big enough for the ham to fit in it! So I ended up doing it in the oven. I cooked the potato casserole and quiches last night, and then just popped them onto the bottom shelf during the last 40 minutes of the ham cooking. It was fine.
