What Would Ms. Manners Do?
Comments (68)When mr. sandyponder and I got married we were both 40, had good jobs, owned our own homes and had all the stuff we ever needed, so we sent the invitation, a map to the site and a card printed on heavy stock like the invite that said something to the effect of "We want your presence, not your presents**" in large print and at the bottom, in small print, it said "If you want to do something, please consider a donation to XXX charity or the charity of your choice in celebration of this momentous occasion!" We received a few presents anyway, but lots of $$ went to a local non-profit that we both care deeply about. IMO making a donation instead of a gift is not impersonal in any way, shape or form, rather, making a charitable gift in someone's name is *highly* personal and an honor, regardless if it's a cash donation, a gently used item of clothing, an hour of volunteer time or anything in between. sandyponder...See MoreWhat was your most Memorable Meal ever?
Comments (46)Mine was Dec. 24, 1971. My soon-to-be fiance had made reservations at a famous restaurant in Pittsburgh to celebrate Christmas. The LeMont is situated on a bluff overlooking Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle and reservations by the window are hard to obtain. He had planned on surprising me with my engagement ring that evening but was so excited that he couldn't wait until we arrived at the restaurant. While in the car he gave me a present to open. Inside was an old German Christmas ornament that had been in his family. It consisted of three balls that nestled inside each other. When I opened the smallest ball I discovered my ring. He really did surprise me, the first of many. I was so excited that I barely recall the actual meal. But it truly was my most memorable. Here's a link to the view - http://www.lemontpittsburgh.com/LeMont/images_04/images_04/homepage_r5_c1.jpg...See MoreCapital Grille Burger
Comments (13)I'm not opposed to mixing some pork or pork sausage with the beef for a burger but if I want meatloaf, I'll make meatloaf and I do like meatloaf but to me, meatloaf is not a burger. And for me, meatballs should be somewhere in-between. A little filler but not just meatloaf made into little balls. A good burger with a bit of seasoning mixed in, on a toasted, quality bun (or open face with toast), maybe a couple paper-thin slices of raw onion and occasionally some good cheese can usually stand on it's own and doesn't need pickle, relish, tomato, lettuce, or "special sauce". Bacon can make anything better but usually I wind up eating the bacon as an appetizer, then eat the burger. As quality dwindles, then add some steak/BBQ sauce and other stuff. If I want to go for something unusual or more decadent, I'll try a Juicy Lucy. When I'm at a restaurant, I guess I look more at what they do best. I don't order steak at a bar. I don't order lasagna at a seafood place, etc....See MoreWedding toast - what to drink?
Comments (26)No Costco in my state but I might peruse Aldi. Don't know about their quality. I just got the paper cups in tonight for the toast. Hubs says drinking champagne out of paper cups is tacky but I am not doing plastic, no way. Initially I was going to buy glass and give them out as wedding favors but the costs of these two weddings are setting me back about 1/4 of my yearly salary already. So I guess this is one of those "conventional or not?" dilemmas....See Moresushipup1
