Brad - if you are thinking of doubling it, you can sub sour cream and/or mayo for another block of cream cheese.

Your recipe above is more like a spread. Adding sour cream or mayo would make it more like a dip.

If you Google "baked crab dip" there are a number of recipes to pick from. I am linking to one that is similar to one I make. The recipe in the link comes from "Touch of Home" website.

I add a couple drops of hot sauce as sffog suggested above. Sometimes I use half mayo and half sour cream. It's a very flexible recipe. You can even add some small shrimp instead of crab. Use the recipe in the link as a guideline.

You don't need to put it in a bread bowl. Just bake it in a casserole dish and serve with crackers. However - if you ever make it for a party at home - the bread bowl makes a beautiful presentation.

Teresa, that recipe looks really good! I like the idea of subbing mayo or sour cream in place of the second block of cream cheese. I will have to make it in a bread bowl someday. Maybe for a cast party :-).

My Mom used to make a version of this. Hers had a little mayo, a dash of hot sauce and heaping tsp. of horseradish. She topped with Ritz cracker crumbs and baked until bubbly. It was always a hit.
It's a very adaptable recipe. Have fun with it!

Looks as if I won't be able to go tomorrow. Maybe I'll make it for a cast party sometime.

Well, I'll be going to workday tomorrow after all! Here is the crab dip all baked up! Teresa, I'm not sick, but transporation is always an issue for me here at home and my usual ride can't make it tomorrow, so I was in a bit of a bind.

For this batch, I doubled the recipe. I also sauteed the onions, added lemon juice and a little paprika before baking and added some dried parsley on the top after baking. I forgot to add butter after I put them in the oven, so mom did it. She always helps. After they were baked, I brushed the melted pieces of margarine spread over the top and added the dried parsley and let them cool.

Teresa, it snowed here the other day, but it was too warm and melted just as quick as it arrived.

Oh my goodness Brad - those pans of crab dip are making me drool! Any chance you could ship one to me in British Columbia?
I love crab and we can catch them here on then west coast of B.C. Here's a recipe you might like - I make them and freeze them and then just a few minutes in the oven and they're ready to go!

6 English muffins, cut in half (Thomson work best)
1 stick butter
1 jar Old English cheese spread
1 1/2 tbsp. mayonnaise
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1 (6 oz.) pkg. crabmeat, thawed & drained of imitation crab
Combine butter (softened), cheese spread and mayonnaise. Add garlic powder, salt and pepper and crab meat. Spread mixture on muffin halves and cut each half into fourths. Place on cookie sheet and freeze. When frozen place in plastic bag, keep frozen until needed. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. This recipe may be made in advance and frozen.

Tobyt, I just found a recipe like that over on cooks.com not long ago. That does sound very easy and delicious, indeed :). I'd love to be able to buy fresh crabmeat as you are. Maybe someday. I'll report back tomorrow on how everyone liked the crab dip!
