Hello Dolly Squares. Remember these?

I think that there are a number of names and versions of this treat. It has probably been more than 20 years since I made these. I forgot just how good there are.

I made them yesterday and they were a big hit with the neighbours Moe shared them with.

Home Cookin Chapter: Recipes From Thibeault's Table

Hello Dollys
============
1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup of sugar
1 1/2 to 2 cup of chocolate chips
1 cup of chopped walnuts
1 cup of coconut
1 can of condensed milk

Heat over to 350°F

Melt Butter and add graham cracker crumbs and sugar. Mix together and then pat into a 8 or 9 inch square baking dish. (You can use an 9 X 13 dish but then the squares will be very thin. Thick is so much better.)

Sprinkle the walnuts over the crust, then the chocolate chips and finish with the coconut. Drizzle the condensed milk evenly over the top. Bake for about 25 minutes until the coconut is lightly brown. Cool and then cut into squares.

RE: Retro Dessert

I remember! Someone I know makes them often (she calls them 7-layer bars). Sometimes she subs butterscotch or peanut butter chips, but chocolate is my favorite! If I get lucky, maybe she'll stop by today....Deeelicious!

 o
RE: Retro Dessert

One of my favorites. Yum! I've made them before with homemade graham crackers and that just puts them over the top. And I love the idea of making them thicker.

RE: Retro Dessert

One of my cousins calls them orgasmic cookie bars. She always brought them to family reunions. Haven't had them in quite a while. Reminds me I haven't talked to her in a while. Time for a catch up too.

RE: Retro Dessert

OH-EM-GEE.

Ann, I had relatives visiting over the weekend, and made these, which I hadn't made since Sam was little.
I call them Magic Bars, and was planning on blogging about them. I altered the original recipe, a little, over the years to cut back on the sweetness, but we love them too.

RE: Retro Dessert

I love them, and we call them Magic Cookie Bars..recipe on the can of condensed milk.
Hello Dolly..cute, never heard them called that!

 o
RE: Retro Dessert

OH Ann I sure do !!! My Mom used to make them as a special treat, haven't had them in years.

Maybe Hello Dollys was a Canadian name?

 o
RE: Retro Dessert

I'm in NJ, and back in jr. high, we made those (and they were called "Hello Dollies") in home ec class. I've been making them ever since.

But here's a tip. Use half the butter, put it in the pan, and put the pan in the oven while it preheats, to melt. Then just lay WHOLE graham crackers in to cover the bottom of the pan. Much easier, and the bars are more stable, they don't crumble from the bottom as much.

 o
RE: Retro Dessert

Good tip, Azzalea, thanks!
So from NY to NJ the name changed...:)But we didn't have Home Ec in my school..
Now I wonder why, Hello Dolly..time to google...

 o
RE: Retro Dessert

I haven't made them in years either but I do remember how good they are, whatever the name.

Thanks Ann, for stirring up a memory.

RE: Retro Dessert

Hmmm - thought I responded, but I don't see my post! Oh well!

My in-laws make these and they call them Hello Dolly's as well. My husband always talks about his mom making them for church events and he wasn't allowed to take any and it used to drive him crazy, seeing them on the table, but not being able to have one!!

Sol - can you post your lighter recipe? I do like them now and then, but they are a little too sweet for me. I can't figure out how to make them less sweet, however. More graham and less chocolate and milk maybe? I suppose for as often as I eat them, it's not a big deal! Some things are just supposed to be gooey sweet!

RE: Retro Dessert

This is what I found when I googled it...as well as MANY recipes!
From The Big Apple..

The Broadway musical Hello, Dolly! opened on January 16, 1964, and became one of the longest-running Broadway shows ever. The musical features a restaurant scene. The origin of foods named "Hello Dolly" requires some explanation.

Clementine Paddleford’s food column in "The Week " magazine on September 19, 1965 featured a "Hello Dolly Cake" recipe by 11-year-old Alecia Leigh Couch, of Dallas, that she borrowed from her grandmother. The recipe included graham crack crumbs, flaked coconut, chocolate chips, chopped nuts, and condensed milk. However, on July 22, 1965, the Ada (OK) Evening News had published a similar recipe for "Hello Dolly Cookies."

Pre-1966, the recipe was variously called "Graham Chip Squares," "Chocolate Graham Squares," "Washington Cookies," "Chewy Delights," "7-Layer Cookies," and other names. The popularity of "Hello Dolly squares" has lessened since the 1960s, but there are many recipes on the internet.

RE: Retro Dessert

Those were popular here in Texas and called "Hello Dollies" here also; although my mother's never looked as good as Ann's.

 o
RE: Retro Dessert

My dad absolutely loves these. We call them 7 layer bars too. I always make them for my dad and usually pack a large ziploc bag with all the ingredients measured out so my mom can have everything on hand should an emergency strike.

RE: Retro Dessert

I think I've said this before but I come from a long linage of non cookers or bakers. I do have an Aunt that likes to cook but not bake. So, I have no memory of these yummy dekightful cookies. Looks like Maggie and I have a new treat to try!

 o
RE: Retro Dessert

Riverrat--Aside from the 'deliciousness' of these cookies, one of the huge advantages is that they are SIMPLE to make--no real cooking/baking skill required, LOL. So jump right in and I'm sure you'll be delighted with the results.

Here's another of my handy tips. For cutting all bar cookies (Hello Dollies, brownies, etc), I use a dough scraper--one of those rectangula blades (about 3" X 5") with a wooden handle along one edge. Just press it straight down into the cookie where you want to cut, pick it straight up and move to your next cut. I find that makes the neatest cuts, with less mess than using a knife and trying to saw through the product.

RE: Retro Dessert

What's all the fuss about?????
I make these every day.
But I called them " Hello Dolly , this is Louis, DollY "

Ill tell you another one if you want.

Ann:
You never save me any .

PS: Retro Dessert

Ann:
Truthfully. I made something like this using Coco Dyna Bits
cereal, that I buy in Walmarts.
It was a while ago.Don't think I could find the Recipe now.

I'm going to try your's and sub the Coco Dyna Bits and cut back on the Chocolate Chips a bit.
I'll let you know how they turn out, Dolly.

RE: Retro Dessert

Here in East Texas we also call these Hello Dollys. They have never fallen from favor here, this is a very popular bar cookie made often. I wish I had a couple right now.

 o
RE: Retro Dessert

Hmmm my mouth is watering!!!!! what a desert it is.... i will definitely try this. Thanks for sharing

 o
RE: Retro Dessert

DGM and DM made a version of this back in the day. They called them Dream Bars and the only difference was they had a cookie or shortbread crust. Mom LOL when I asked her about this. She said it was the only dessert bar she made that us kids didn't like and it lasted more than a day or two......most of us kids didn't like coconut back then. Guess it's time for the seven year rule thing now!

RE: Retro Dessert

Oh yum! I still make these occasionally, but as with most sweets, not very often these days.

I remember them from childhood and we called them 7-Layer Bars, too. (Never heard the name "Hello Dolly Bars" until just today! LOL)

Doesn't matter what you call them, they are so easy and delicious. Hmm....maybe I'll make a pan this weekend. Thanks for the inspiration, Ann!

RE: Retro Dessert

Ann T :
You are a trouble maker.
I didn't have many of the ingredients. So, I put Butter in a pan.
Warmed it, when it melted, I put in some Cocco Dyna Bits
( Cocco Krispies )
Chopped up Marshmellows, Chopped small Almonds and Peanuts.
A cup of Vanilla Ice Cream and a Packet of Instant Strawberry Quaker Oats.
OH! 1/2 cup of Nestles Peanut Butter and Chocolate Bits.

Stirred this mess a litle and put it in a 350 deg. Oven for 15 minutes.

I should have eaten 1/2 cup of the ice Cream, because it didn't get hard enough.

It is good but a little soft.

Now I'll gain another pound, testing it out.
I hope you are happy !!!!!

RE: Retro Dessert

Lou, don't blame me. I take no credit or blame for that concoction. LOL!! Enjoy.

RE: Retro Dessert

LOL Ann.

I saw the picture first, before I read. I was looking, asking myself, is this the Retro Dessert thread? I thought it was some kind of casserole. Well, I guess it is come to think of it. You have a new one Lou, Dessert Casserole. Another Original! Once it's all the way cold and has set a while maybe it will firm up a bit. Or you could always do what good cooks do with desserts that don't quite make it. Eat it ON the ice cream. You made me laugh Lou and that's always good.

 o
RE: Retro Dessert

Ann:
You were right. When it cooled a little. I could shape them into round Balls.
I sprinkled them with Powdered sugar. Then brought some to a neighbor friend to test.
He said " Man , I never tasted anything like this "
I let it go at that. They were pretty good !!!
Think I'll call them Monkey Balls , because they are cute,
Like Monkeys.
LOU

 o
RE: Retro Dessert

I just made some of this (see the Carnation Milk thread), and I think they would be excellent served with coffee to counteract the sweetness. I can also imagine serving them warm with ice cream...

I'm definitely making some for my next craft group meeting.

 o
RE: Retro Dessert

I haven't made 7-layer bars in years, I've never heard them called Hello Dolly Bars either.

David, we didn't have these often either, because no one in my house liked coconut either. Now I love the stuff but the Monkey Princess doesn't. I'll bet they'd be good without coconut, but they'd lack a layer, LOL.

thanks, Ann, for the reminder.

Ann:
A few more friends ( I have some ) stopped in to visit.
They tried the Monkey Balls and said they were delicious.

Kept asking, what were all the little things it there.
I told them ," I can't tell you, it was a Secret Recipe ", because I didn't remember everything that I added.

I'll try to remember what and how much and put it in here
Think I listed most of it.?
LOU
Ann: You can take credit if you want .

 o
RE: Retro Dessert

No thanks Lou, you can take full credit. You deserve it.

RE: Retro Dessert

Ann: OK !!! But don't complain if I become Famous.
I have to buy some Coconut and all the ingredients for the Hello Dolly's.
The women want to have their Bible Study here on Friday.
They miss all the cooking, that I did before.
I'll have some goodies for them.

Shaun:
All of the flowers didn't Bloom Yet.
Maybe tommorrow ?

Kathleen:
Sharon Cb:

The Bears destroyed all my feeders but none of my warning devices were moved ?

And all the seeds were still in the one Plastic Jar Feeder.
I think if a Bear knocked them down, he would have chewed the plastic apart.

Maybe it's the Racoons
Have to keep an eye on them. They look like Bandits.
I don't know if they can shinny up a 6 round inch pole ,
16 foot high???
