That IS a great idea. I bought my first blender at a garage sale in 1970, just out of high school, and it was designed to be used with canning jars. Great for making salad dressing, and I later used it to blend baby food. I hadn't thought about it when making the slurry for fruit or vegetable leather. Thanks for sharing that tip ;-)

Somewhere I have a blender and that idea makes me consider getting it out and use it on occasion! I don't know what happened to my stick blender. Methinks somebody took it with her and didn't return it...

Wow I wasn't expecting the size and threading to be the same but it does match my Oster. Not too convenient for anything that may need help "scraping down the sides," I'm debating whether I'd be comfortable making a frozen drink, and I'm guessing pureeing anything hot could be quite dangerous. But for a lot of other uses I really like the idea. Maybe I don't need a Bullet system afterall!

Do be careful in trying that trick.

The glass jars which come with the blenders are always tempered glass which are impact and heat shock resistant, or impact resistant plastic.

The others are not.

Another thing to be careful, if you put very hot liquid partially in a jar, screw cap it and blend, the jar will be highly pressurized. This is due to the expansion of the cold air inside becoming hot from blending with the hot liquid.

Exactly.

It's a popular technique over on the Pepper Forum for grinding the dried Hot and SuperHot peppers into powders.......

Maybe I'm dense, but I'm just not able to picture this process. You turn the jar of fruit upside down on the blender? How do you keep the contents from falling out?

Sally, you would screw the blade assembly onto mason jar while the jar is sitting on the counter as it normally would... then you flip the whole thing over and stick it on the blender. Does that make sense?

I think it would only work with the really old or really cheap blenders though... people who have a Breville like me or a Vitamix or anything else that isn't that old classic standard size and shape wouldn't be able to try this. Neat idea, though.

I do have an old and cheap blender, so I'll bet it would work fine with mine.

Thanks for the tip, I'll see if it works for grinding Elery's hot peppers, which make me cough and choke just putting them in the dehydrator. Maybe this could contain the toxic aroma, LOL.

My ancient Osterizer comes with small 1-cup jars which screw onto the blender base. It's useful for pureeing small amounts. They have screw caps so you can use them for storing as well.

I'm very surprised that the Oster has kept going all these years. I got it when I was still a student, I think it costed around $20. We use it regularly for smoothies and to puree soups.

All the old Oster blenders and some if not all of the Hamilton Beach models fit Mason mars. They still make models today which fit. but not all.

I'm thinking about it for grinding spice blends, things with bay leaves and the like. Not sure how well it'd work for that but worth a try. And maybe for chopping up some vegetables for meatloaf. I'd think it would be easier to clean than the big container and being a smaller size it might work better too. Won't know 'till ya try I guess.

Hi cookie8 - I just used your tip for blending bulgogi marinade and it worked great. I think the pint size was a beneficial for blending up a relatively small amount of stuff, everything whipped around so much there was no need to scrape down the sides. I'll definitely be using this idea again. Thanks!

I am going to hit a second hand store and pick an old blender up. I have a Ninja and a Magic Bullet and neither of them are compatible. This would be perfect to mix up a dressing in a small jar and just throw it in the fridge. I loved the idea when I saw it. I have a ton of mason jars around.

FOAS, bulgogi marinade? Recipe please.

Cookie - Oster works. I've got an old chrome beehive Osterizer, and a newer (early 2000's) model. Blades and jars are all interchangable.

Cathy - The recipe I used is from maangchi.com which I found thanks to Gina W. I left out the carrots and green onion and just threw approximate measurements of everything else in the blender. Then stir-fried the beef, while she calls for grilling. Although she doesn't specify it in the text version of the recipe, Asian or Korean pear is preferred. I don't particularly love pears generally but these are so good that I really look forward to eating the half that I don't use in the marinade!

Marinade (for 1 pound of beef):

ý cup of crushed pear
ü cup onion purée
4 cloves of minced garlic
1 chopped green onion
2 tbs soy sauce
2 tbs brown sugar (or 1 tbs of brown sugar and 1ý tbs rice syrup)
a pinch of ground black pepper
1 tbs toasted sesame oil
several thin slices of carrot

Works just like that with my dried peppers.....Fill the jar with dry pods....cover and blend....It quickly converts to powder .....(You need a coffee grinder to make pepper flakes).....Tap the jar to dislodge the powder from the blade and add a Ball lid....

RE: Glass Safety.....I've never chopped fresh product or blended hot/cold liquids with the Ball jar.....
