My surprise on the door step yesterday!

Thank you so very much Tricia!!! I made Tricia pot holders for her new kitchen. This was my reward! When you said you would have fun shopping you weren't kidding. I never expected anything like this. We've already been looking at the books. DH got the atlas out so he could find Mystic. The syrup will be thoroughly enjoyed, the coffee cup and spatula well used. Thank you again!

Up until about ten years ago, we had over twelve hundred wild acres behind us gone back to the wild after farming and strip mining. In those days, the butterflies were so thick you'd see dozens of different species in an hour outside, and it was nothing to see fox or coyote sauntering down the drive. The fellow who owned the farm around us came over one day to reluctantly tell me he'd seen a small black bear in the area of my chicken shed. Wasn't going to tell anybody, but figured I'd better know. I also didn't tell anybody, because I was thrilled they had some safe place nearby without the possibility of humankind doing something unkind to them. By and large, if there isn't any manmade 'stuff' nearby for them to interlope into and explore, they're a shy and gentle creature. Last week I walked down to the road to get the mail and right in the middle of our drive at road's edge was a huge cow plop. LOL. Now, there are cattle all around us, but to have gotten there, a cow had to have been standing to drop it.......... splat. IOW sometime during the night a cow had been walking down the road. LOL. I have lots of wild cow stories, but my fav is the pretty little angus calf we were bottlefeeding at my son's farm. It went exploring one day and got up the back steps and was in his kitchen. LOL. Did you know cattle's joints are such that they can walk up stair steps but not down?

Oh hell yeah I'll try that with the Collards too!!! That sounds like the bomb! I've got some pepper-bacon and definatley have the hotsause....habanero baby LOL! I'll try it with just the Olive oil and seasoning next time; how about a little cajun seasoning? I've been using it in the Okra Gumbo on top of the cayenne I add....oh yes it's spicy! Instead of the bell pepper for the trinity I sub with jalapeno or anaheim. Speaking of which, I've been using frozen Okra....but I've got 2 Longhorn seedlings to plant this year, so I may be knocking at your door for some okra cooking/frying tips come summer...deal? I'm ok with it in Gumbo, but as a side I've always cringed. Yup, I'm a northern girl but lived in Dallas and florida when I was introduced to it. I think the only reason I didn't like cooked spinach as a kid was because of the vinegar, but I'm open to trying it again. Thanks a bunch! Vera

no-green-thumb, SO sorry to hear of your estimate troubles. We encountered a similar hitch in our patio plans when we went to a local upscale landscape and design center. It cost us $500 just to get a personal visit and recommended plan. For this price, we could look at the plan, but not keep it unless we hired the center to do the work. If we liked the plan but chose not to use the center, we would have to pay an additional $500 - $1,000 for just the plan. Anyway, you get the idea. The plan they came up with was nice, but pricey, at $19,000 for a flat patio with a step down from the house, and no seating walls or plantings (hardscape only). The plan did use a very nice paver block - Brussels. So we decided to get another estimate from a small operation, and to make a long story shorter . . . we can get a larger patio with a seating wall around the whole thing, lighting wiring, a sidewalk and grill area for $20,000 with the same Brussels block. While I still think this is expensive, I'm much happier with the low overhead, down-to-earth operation than the big-wig outfit. The patio will be over 500 square feet, plus a sidewalk, seating walls with pillars, and a grill area. We were initially hoping for something in the $10,000 - $15,000 range. We didn't give either company a budget amount, because we knew what we wanted, but figured if it were too expensive that we'd just wait and save more money. I think it is most unfortunate that your landscape designer failed to listen to your wishes as to budget and size. The cell phone etiquette thing seems to be a widespread problem everywhere. You'll probably have better results with the other recommended contractors. Please keep us posted. Jan

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate all your thoughts and prayers. Still feeling pretty good and was able to get out of bed without assistance this morning. Me and my daughter walked just a little bit outside yesterday and will do the same today. I saved up magazines and I'm reading a really good book, which helps with the down time.

Teresa, no we didn't wake up to the snow and more snow, just a mother who decided her legs wouldn't work as she was getting into my SUV. Some is grief, some is Alzhiemer's and some is just plain mad because someone can't be with her 24/7 like dad was. And then found out that she had had several bowls of cerial and pretzels for breakfast because there weren't any bananas. Her sugar was over 400 right before lunch. No wonder her legs wouldn't hold her up! My DB is trying very hard to keep her with them, but it looks like she will be in a nursing home soon. I am thankful he was there, even tho he wasn't supposed to be, because she would have taken me to the ground with her. There is no way I could have held her up. It is so hard, especially with dad only being gone almost 3 months. But it was so heart warming to come home to Tricia's wonderful gift! I continue to be amazed by the wonderful friends I am making here at the CF.

Oh gosh Tami, I'm sorry to read about your Mom. Seems like many of us here either have already been through or are starting the process of aging parents. Having been through my father's age related dementia, MIL's Alzheimer's, FIL's agonizingly sloooow and debilitating health issues - you have my heart felt sympathy. Best of luck to all of you.

I'm glad you received the package intact. I wrapped that mug in about 10' of bubble wrap. And you have no idea how pleased I am to see you didn't receive a broken jar of sticky maple syrup! ;)

About the maple syrup since we discussed it via email - I use Grade A and Grade B as I do olive oil and extra virgin olive oil. Sometimes, I use a lighter hand.

Thanks again for your additions to our new kitchen. CF friends are great!

While they are all lovely gifts, I must say that I have that same rubber spatula (a friend got it for me at Epcot of all places) and it is the best rubber scraper I've ever touched. You will love it! Very thoughtful gifts on both sides :0)
