dcarch, I've never eaten my daylily shoots... only the flowers. Just noticed the other day that the shoots are coming up, and I definitely have too many, so I may finally try them! same with my hostas when I finally do see pips! :)

Momj, my daylilies are one of the few things our deer don't eat. Go figure. I never thought about eating the shoots. And I think there are hostas in the yard at work.

Most of my garlic is up and seedlings are sprouting in the greenhouse. It's just getting dry enough to till in the garden.

We forage morels (I'm either not comfortable enough picking others, or we tried them and didn't like them). And huckleberries, black caps, elderberries, lambs quarters (well, they are a weed in the garden), rose hips, chamomile. We have lots of Oregon grape and thimbleberries, but we don't really like them, so I don't bother. And there's wild ginger, but it's a real pain to do anything with the skinny little roots. Also collected fiddlehead ferns one time, but I think they were not the right kind...they tasted like my gramma's Jergen's Hand Lotion smelled when I was a kid.

I have chives already, a whole pot of them!

The other day as I was pulling a million dandelions, I thought, "if I pull all these, what will I have to eat if we have a 'zombie Apocalypse'?" Not to fear though, I missed about another million that have popped up! HAHA!

Glad I read up on this further.... according to everything I've read, only Hemerocallis fulva is definitely edible (safe to eat). Cultivars, which I grow, may not be!

Yes, deer are edible. :-)

So are cats, and that's the only edible thing in my garden.

First thing I did was get rid of all the citrus trees. Second thing - I planted only ornamentals. I live in such a rough neibhrourhood that any edibles would tempt people to simply climb over the gate and help themselves.

That said, one of my cats is getting close to 18 pounds...

You always make such art with your cooking that I was tempted to send you the two morels I found just to see what you'd do with them.

Other than those the only backyard foraging I've done was to pick wineberries and make a wineberry-vinaigrette salad dressing.

I have some green grass, after that massive rain the last few days. And two tulips.
Rhubarb is up-ish. I'll eat that soon.
I might forage after careful study.
I just can't shake the NYTimes article years ago about the woman with an odd illness.
Finally discovered she had a toxic unwanted visitor in her salad bed.
And the theatre actor in Canada that died eating a flower. A very deadly one.

Aconitum, (monkshod), was the killer. I have a couple large ones and it gives me a shudder. But gorgeous.
Atropa Belladonna i rip out but comes back every year. Right at the edge of the deck where visiting infants waddle. They'll eat anything.
The milk sap of common milkweed has a toxic sap that can cause strange reactions and
will destroy your cornea if it gets in your eye. I have a 1/2 acre of that but i let it run wild for the butterflies.
A friend got very sick eating foraged mushrooms. Just after we attended a seminar and hike.
What a downer i am. Just forage carefully, : )

I guess I could eat the purslane growing in my flower garden. And my dad's yard has the wild onion. I guess I just need a few snails for the meat dish!

Does cutting them interfere with flowering?

Thanks Bob. I tried to grow morel a couple of times. Nothing! wasted my money.

Bumblebeez, I have so many, it makes no difference. For each shoot I cut, I think two or three new plants will result. I harvest so much I have to give some to friends.

There's been a few years where the vegetables in my garden did poorly for one reason or another, but the weeds did wonderfully! So I started a thread on another forum about "Those edible weeds."

Right now in my neck of the woods, ramps, fiddleheads and dandelion greens are ready.

I forgot we also have a patch of invasive running bamboo in one corner of our property, every year I invite a woman I work with to come over and cut off all of the shoots between 6 and 12 inches tall. Usually she hauls away about 10 pounds of shoots. She once brought a batch that she cooked into work the next day, and they were quite tasty. Since then I've twice cut and cooked some on my own.

I wish I had room in my yard to grow some bamboo. Bamboo is another wild "weed" which gives you delicious food which requires no attention.

Speaking of no attention, HOSTA TIME!!! :-)

You can tell from the pictures how delicious and tender hosta shoots are. I say they are better than white asparagus, and a lot cheaper.
