Homemade bread - how to keep it fresh but crusty?

I haven't bought bread for a couple of months now thanks to this great forum. It's tastier, cheaper - and also a lot of fun. I didn't think bread making could be such fun!

Up till now I've been wrapping the loaf in a kitchen towel and it kept well for up to 3 days, but it's getting hot in the land of (powdered) milk and honey. Today we're almost 99 where I live. If this goes on (it will), I'll need an electric saw to slice my bread.

I don't want to wrap the loaf in plastic becasue the crust gets soft and the whole texture changes for the worse I think.

Any suggestions? Please bear in mind I don't have a cool basement. The whole house is a furnace!

Thanks in advance!
