Can I hook up a 5-Gallon Propane Canister to a Commercial Range?

I'd like to find it if it is possible to hook up a 5-gallon propane canister to a commercial range (propane model of course).

Reason is I like to cook steaks outdoors so as not to have smoke fill up the house. I have been cooking in my backyard with a table top range hooked up to a 5-gallon propane canister. I'm now looking to replace this little range and get a commercial range for my backyard (with high BTU output). The only caveat is I do not want to install the typical 100-gallon tank (as I cook only once a week); I simply want to run it via the 5-gallon canister.

I've read here that some members have installed propane range using 100-gallon tanks.

Any advice on the feasibility of running 5-gallon canisters on a commercial range is appreciated.

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking. Sure you can hook up a propane tank to a propane stove. As far as using the little 20# tanks, I guess the question is how much will you be using. I'd probably keep a second tank handy, possibly on a switch although not really necessary. I had that on the trailer at the lake so I had 2 100# tanks hooked up and switch over when needed. Then I wouldn't be caught short in the middle of cooking a meal or lose refrigeration since we had a gas frig too. The swutch was quick to switch over when it ran out and I could fill the empty tank at my leisure

Do you have propane for your home? You could even hook it up to the main tank.

Although I guess unless you plan to do much more cooking with the new stove than with the unit you have, and since you didn't indicate contrary, I presume the 20# tank lasts long enough for your needs, so I'd go ahead. You can always get a bigger tank later if you need it and the 20# could be a spare.

Look into a turkey fryer burner or outdoor cooker burner, only $100 or so and typically 55,000 btu/hr, considerably more than the 20,000-30,000 btu/hr of a commercial range.

AGA Legacy is dual fuel only. Electric oven and gas(or propane) stovetop. Blue Star only makes all gas(or propane) ranges not dual fuel. Relative to 100 gallon propane tank the difference between 22k btu and 15btu or 7k btu is miniscule and irrelevant. You can always turn down the Super Nova burner down to 15k btu but you can't turn up the Legacy burner up to 22k btu. Nobody "NEEDS" a Bluestar nor an AGA Legacy. Our grandmonthers managed to feed our families on 8-10k btu burners. 22k BTU burners can be very useful for techniques other than stir-frying. SautÃÂ©ing, searing, grilling, boiling large amounts of water, and quicker recover times. Dropping cold food into hot pans lowers the temperature of the oil and/or pan. Deep frying for example. If you have oil at ideal 350 degrees and you drop cold chicken the temp of the oil drops and you are no longer "deep frying " but paraboiling. Instead of crisping the exterior the oil is seeping deep into the chicken meat. Gross. Powerful 22k btu burners help you to quickly get back up to 350. In addition there is the differences in the evenness of heat between a traditional open burner and a sealed burner like the AGA Legacy. With sealed burners it will be hotter around the edges of the pan while open burners are a lot more even across the pan. Cheaper options? American Range Performer Series(an open burner range made in Southern California) 36" starts at $5k and Bluestar makes the RCS with max 15k btu burners. Cheaper you start looking at Mexican and Chinese made ranges like the Chinese NXR at $3200 for 36" propane model. Well we are extremely lucky we needed to install a conversion kit and didn't just hook this oven up. We had the propane supplier send out a serviceperson to install the conversion kit and he couldn't believe this floor model oven was sold to us. It was missing a burner tube and the broiler element, so he said if we had hooked it up and turned it on it would have exploded.! so i can not tell you how we thankful we are for all of your advice! I almost cried when he told us..he was really shocked they sold us it. The oven is going back to the store and we are negotiating with them as they want to refund our,oney. But we have invested delivery of 3 hrs, bought the kit, a griddle pan, a service call, and now had to haul it back 3 hrs. The same oven brand new is $900 and I bought this floor model for $ 500 that was supposedly just mixing the box. We got them down in price but my husband is insisting on no addtl cost after all this hassle and the safey issue involved. Really scary.. Never thought of the risk in buying an oven that was a floor model! So thank you ...!!!!!!!

Nitsua, LOL! Yes, each time I saw this thread title that's what I thought, like one of those carnival games of counting how many gumballs were in the jar to win a prize. I didn't think to calculate either until Deeby asked for a formula to convert her pot size to gallons which is sort of the same thing. Deeby For a 20" top diameter pot, if you don't want to measure the height, bottom diameter and top diameter and get the exact gallons in the convenient online calculator, an estimate is that you have a sort of #20 or #25 pot, the height coming way up your thigh is quite tall. Most 20 inch pots are around 20 gallons, but the formula gives around 27 gallons since I guessed your "half way thigh high" is about 25 inches tall, but that was hard to work with since you could be wearing shoes, measuring the outer lip, or it could be sitting on a saucer, etc. Because pots have different slants from top to bottom, it isn't enough just to measure the top diameter. Yours sounds closest to the #25 tall here which is shorter but a little wider so around 25 gallons sounds reasonable. You can compare it to commercial pot sizes at nursery pots also to get a really good idea of the gallons: Nursery Pot Commercial Sizes The other way to do it is to see if the company/product number is on the bottom of the pot and see if their website has it listed in gallons too. OK, finally decided to boil some water. My largest regular sauce pan is 3qt. I didn't fill it so it probably started with 2.5 qt of hot tap water; I was interested in maintaining a rolling boil, not the total time. I did notice that it took ~10 min. to bring that water to the rolling boil on my largest burner that is listed as 13000BTU on propane. I then added a cup or so cold water and reheated on my 11000btu burner with good rolling boil. I then moved to my lower 7000BTU burner (didn't add more water) and it went back to a boil, but not really rolling boil, but more than a simmer. So yes, I guess you have a problem. Back to orifice sizes: (while this may not help since the biggest orifice in use doesn't do the job) but you could probably do a simple check of whether a larger orifice would help with what you already have, at least assuming that you have a little kit of tools including a small socket set of metric sockets. The orifices usually use 7 or 8mm sockets for removal or insertion (I forget which). My suggestion would be to remove the largest burner's orifice and place it in the next smaller burner. If that medium burner does not have big yellow flames ('though it probably will: watch your arms) but still shows mostly or all blue, then you know that your burners probably all needed larger orifices. If that test medium burner now boils water, you would assume that it now had a better and hotter gas/air mixture that even overcame the burner being smaller. As I suggested at the paragraph top, that is unlikely, but you might learn something. If you try this, you might want to put a dab of butter or something in the little socket to hold the orifice in the socket while removing and reinserting (no butter in the actual hole!).

I'm no expert but when I moved into an old house a while back, they had the regular stove/oven hooked up to a small, probably 10 or 20 gallon propane tank and I cannot see why it wouldn't have worked with a 5 gallon tank. I do know that when you buy a gas stove, you will need some sort of a converter to convert it from natural gas to propane.

Yes, you sure can run a stove off of a 5 gallon tank of propane. Many natural gas stoves can be converted to propane gas simply by changing (sometimes adjusting) the individual burner jets. Keep in mind that in some situations you must use a "LOW pressure" pressure regulator for use on the LPG bottle. The outlet pressure from the 5 gallon bottle to the stove burner is important to obtain the correct operation of the stove.

However, I would suggest you consider using a "HIGH pressure" burner like the ones in the link below. There are several models that work well for cooking steaks. The Cadillac burner pictured below is one type of burner that I have and often use. It has lots of BTUs which I use for stir fry and cooking in large dutch ovens or stock pots. A Wok will fit too into that burner. You will get close to professional tasting stir fry foods because of the high heat capabilities. Suggest you get the stand too to put this stove at about knee height.

I also have the Super Cooker Propane stove. This portable stove is real good for blackening steaks, deep frying, and boiling seafood in large stock pots. Notice the large size of this burner......great for heating large skillets evenly. The pressure regulator that comes with this stove works well. However, I use a better (IMO) adjustable High pressure regulator with my stove to get an even higher BTU output when I need it yet still maintain a barely simmer flame when I need that too. This stove works great and one that I highly recommend. This is coming from a guy who does a lot of cooking outdoors often in huge batches.......

A 30lb or 7 1/2gal tank can vaporize enough propane to run a 2'x4' commercial griddle. So yes, a five gal. tank can can run a commercial range. If your not sure just look up the btu output and compare it to this chart...

Just be sure the Range is not set for Natural Gas.

I installed a Natural Gas Home Heater in my home and was going to use Propane.

My Propane Dealer came out and changed the Orfices on the burners, to use Propane .

Size of the tank should be good. Some of the new Barbecues are larger than Commercial Ranges.
