Farmers' Market break

Because you all have been so supportive of my selling my breads at the farmers' market for the past 3 years or so, I just wanted to let you know that I am taking a break from the market this year. It is hard to do late night baking after working a full day at my job and I want to be able to spend time with my mom part of the weekend.

If/when I can retire, then baking for the market might be possible again. I'll still be making bread at home regularly. Thanks for your interest!

Teresa, With your dad gone, I can understand why you want to spend time with your mom. As much as you will miss the farmers market I bet your customers are going to miss you even more.

You certainly have my support. Our mothers aren't going to be around forever and they need us too. It's sad for all that loved your special baked goods, but two jobs is a load to carry. Enjoy your time with Mom.

We opened the FM early for '09 this Passed Sat.(3/7). I didn't have much so I dug up strawberry plants(bundle of 25 for $6.00) and daylilies(bundles of 15+ for $3.00)...sold them bareroot. Also had qt size pots of mousetail jack-in-the-pulpits($5.00 per qt). Had some surplus Stilletto hostas so I knocked them out of the pots,washed and packaged them up and sold those bare root($2.00 for bundle of 3-4 div.) also. Sold bags of Gold Ball turnips and greens. I also brought 1 gal.ornamental purple leaf plum and giant pussywillow. I sold everything but 4 of the jacks(they didn't have any blooms) only sold 1 pussywillow and none of the plums(customers were interested until they found out they were only ornamental). Weather was warm but very,very windy but still we had a very good customer turn-out. I'm primary a potted ornamental grower and vendor so only time will tell what the economy does to my sells for '09. I do plan on doing more bareroot sales for the early season to help gardeners afford to keep gardening and to move out my more common and surplus stock to make room in the greenhouse for newer plant material I'm growing off. Travis@bloosquall,thanks for the plug and compliment.When considering price pay attention to what the competitors are selling for and adjust your price up or down according to quality.In a price war everybody loses.I have a high base price for those who just want to buy a bulb or two and any sales over two pounds[I have a $30 minimum] and give a 20% instant discount(its easy to figure in your head) which encourages larger sales.Most large sales occur during planting season[sept.-nov.] with most sales in Oct.If you overproduce your market demand,which is easy to do,you will have unsellable stock no matter how cheap or awesome it may be.I have a box of mixed varieties at a cheap price some are small(2"minus),broken bulbs,highly irregular shapes and just plain ugly.I sell basically two sizes-2"-21/2"planting grade and 21/2"-3"gourmet grade same price.More than a half dozen varieties leads to consumer confusion.KISS-keep it simple stupid.I had 16 varieties this year and am cutting back by a third and also overproduced the market-left over stock.Sales $10-15k.Grew 12,000 bulbs,10k sellable this year and cutting back to 10k planted and hopefully 9k sellable.Some new varieties just did not perform/disappointing.My Spanish Roja outsells and outperforms everything I grow and that goes for the other vendors also.I have the highest and lowest prices in the market.I planted 6k Roja last year and about half were gourmet size.Most consumers will buy the largest bulbs;big sells and junk will break you. Guru Engeland claims its difficult for a grower to surpass 1500 pounds of hand-crafted garlic and I would totally agree.You have to keep 200-300# for planting.So you will probably end up with 1000# of quality bulbs.At 8 bulbs to the pound avg.you will have to plant 12k+bulbs;lots of work and preplanning. A 1000# at $6 pound will give you a gross of 6k now deduct expenses(fertilizer,marketing,etc.) You figure it out.You would probably make more money standing on a street corner with a sign saying,"WILL WORK FOR FOOD".I been selling and growing garlic for 15 years and have been insulted and praised but I'll be damned if I'm gonna work for nothing.There is no competition with junk and agri-garlic.Be proud of your product,grow the best.Yeah,I still have garlic for sale.Van Foeken Farm

If you are growing plants from seed in small containers, the cost of materials is just pennies. Your bigger costs could be capital costs if you are putting up any new structures to do this, energy costs for heating and lights; and pesticides can be very expensive. More important is what people will pay and what other vendors are charging. I think it is easier to put a fair price on the plant and see what happens. If you are always selling out, then it is time to raise prices. At our local farmers' markets I see a huge difference in quality, and this can be just as important as price if not more so. If your plants are spindly or pale, you won't sell very many even if the price is low. Don't try to sell a 2" sprout in a 4" pot. The plants need to look like they are vigorous and should fill out the pot, both tops and roots.

I think the Song Haven Farm has a reasonable selection of produce, and not too high a price. (See link.) These folks only provide 15 weeks of produce (mid-July- mid-October), and they limit their selection somewhat, but they do provide enough that you could be happy cooking and eating produce for 4 months. I think their listing would be a good start for planning a CSA offering. Note that they only offer 25 shares, but their offerings also probably do not exhaust them as much as some of the larger CSAs with more variety of offerings. A CSA is no good if you are exhausted by the experience, and quit soon after starting. I had several conversations with the owner of another CSA in their area, and she also limited her shares, but had a longer time period of offerings because she had a greenhouse (mostly solar) to produce the food earlier. I believe she had something like 75 shares, each around $1200, and each requiring a couple half days of work during the year. She lived simply but comfortably on the income produced. I think she did not want to increase her farm size because it would have been too much work for her, and she did not want to hire full time help. She did have several unpaid summer interns who lived on the farm to learn techniques, and of course, work hard! Sometimes, in spite of how much we love to do something....it's necessary to take a break.
I am sure your customers will miss your loaves....but your mom will welcome the attention.

Teresa, it sounds like a wise decision and one your DM will appreciate. While your regular customers will miss you, they don't realize the stress that doing a weekly farmers market can generate, or the time involved.

I support your decision too, Teresa but I always looked forward to your Saturday "reports" and I'll miss them. You'll not be sorry you made this decision.

I'll miss your reports, too. What you made, what you sold, how quickly and on the rare occasion, what you brought home. I sure can understand needing more time for your aging mother.

Enjoy your Mother while you can!

As for late-night baking,
After a full day on the job,
Well, I always wondered how you did it,
Where you got your energy.

I'm another one who enjoyed and looked forward
To your weekly reports.
For one thing,
I've always wished we had a Farmer's Market
Where I could sell baked goods.
I love baking and enjoyed doing it for the public.
But now the outlet I had is gone,
And I miss it.

Don't be surprised if your customers
Call you at home asking for your breads.

I am amazed at your energy to do all that you do. Your customers will surely miss you. I, too, enjoyed the weekly reports and occasional photos. Enjoy your time doing other things and being with your mother. I have a feeling you won't be sitting on your hands. :)

Teresa, I agree, it's the right decision. You need to spend time with your Mom now, she needs you more than the customers needed the bread.

I did enjoy the pictures and reports, though. Maybe you can take your Mom to the farm market and visit your friends, find something yummy, if that's something your Mom would like. My Mother and stepmother both love craft fairs, farm markets and general local festivals.

Annie, I've already planned 2 visits to different markets and shops. My parents loved to visit different grocery stores and farmers' markets when they traveled.

Rusty, my energy has deserted me....don't know where it went?

Ded, I've used the items that I bought in Chinatown often and wish I had the time/money to come back to Philly.

All, thank you for your kind words. I will miss seeing the regulars at the market and I'm sure I'll get there when the produce starts coming in. Sometimes the universe just tells you when its time to change gears. I knew my friends here would understand that.

Your regular customers will miss you, but you have to do what is best for you and your Mom. As the others have said, enjoy your time with her. My Mom passed in 1998 and I am so happy I devoted as much time with her as I did.

I will miss your reports and pictures from your booth at the farmer's market, too, but you are doing what is best. Enjoy life while you can.

Teresa, somehow I just knew you would. My own Mother really likes touring wineries and doing the tasting, because she has me to drive her about and be designated driver, LOL

Hug your Mom for me, anyone who visits farm markets and grocery stores on vacation is really one of "us"!
