Homemade Dry Ranch Dressing Mix Recipe

Reading the thread about homemade substitutions for all the convenience foods made me think about this. We use one of those recipes that calls for a ranch dressing mix, and I'd rather try a homemade version. I'm trying to find a recipe I can use instead of the Hidden Valley Ranch Ranch Dressing Mix (Dry). Wondering if anyone has one? Thank you!

I'm sure there's a recipe out there. I use Buttermilk Ranch Dressing Base from Penzeys Spices and maybe you can figure out a homemade recipe based on the ingredients.

Ingredients: flake salt, bell peppers, garlic, onion, sugar, Tellicherry black pepper, minced parsley, thyme and basil.

I mix this with thick homemade kefir. I skip the addition of mayonnaise. The recipe calls for 1 c. buttermilk and 1 c. mayonnaise. You mix 1-2 T. of the base in 2 T. water. Let stand 5 minutes, whisk into the buttermilk/mayo mixture.

Cindy, there are a bunch out there. Many of them call for saltine cracker crumbs, but that always sounded kind of weird to me. Found this one online somewhere -- maybe chowhound? -- and it's pretty good. The best part is that you can adapt it any number of ways to suit your taste. The salt can be reduced or even eliminated. Same with the dill.

COPYCAT H.V. RANCH DRESSING MIX

1/2 cup dry buttermilk (can use regular powdered milk, but I'm not sure how that would affect taste/texture)
1 T. dried parsley flakes
1 tsp. instant minced onions
1 tsp. dill weed
1 tsp. garlic salt
1 tsp. onion powder
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. salt (I didn't add it)
1/4 tsp. pepper

Throw ingredients in a blender or food processor and mix until it's finely 'powdered'.

Mix with whatever combination of mayo/sour cream/buttermilk/ milk you usually do. For 2 cups of dip or dressing, start with 1 tablespoon mix, increasing gradually if you think it needs more oomph. Same with recipes that call for 1 packet of H.V. One tablespoon was recommended, but you may find you prefer using more like 1-1/2.

Here's my basic vinaigrette; I've made it for years. If you like tarragon, go for it: Tarragon Vinaigrette Dressing 6 oz Olive Oil (see note) 2 oz White Wine Vinegar 1 tsp dried tarragon 1/8 to Â¼ tsp salt (preferably kosher) generous grinding of black pepper 4 to 6 dashes of Tabasco about Â¼ tsp of Dijon mustard Put all the ingredients in a container and blend well with a fork or whisk. If you want it a little thicker, put an ice cube in it while blending it, removing the ice cube prior to dressing the salad. It can be made up earlier in the day and stored in a glass container, covered, in the fridge; just whip it up again immediately prior to dressing the salad. Makes about one cup. Note on olive oil: this recipe is only as good as the oil you use. DonÂt use cheap olive oil (or--horrorsÂÂliteÂ olive oil.) Use a good green "primavera" extra virgin oil, no blends. Bertolli is fine. If you can find a French oil like Hilaire Fabre or James Plagniol, get it; itÂs fantastic. Variation 1: use walnut or hazelnut oil instead of the olive oil. Variation 2: for the vinegar, use half vinegar and half lemon juice. However you vary it, though, make sure you follow the proverb "A spendthrift with oil and a miser with vinegar" Âthe oil to vinegar ratio should be about 3:1.

Susytwo, storing the mixes so they don't get overlooked is part the meal planning. I have a Baking Center where all my baking supplies are stored (flours, sugars, cocoa, baking soda, powder, flavorings, chocolate, etc.) so it all goes there. Meal planning helps me keep from getting overwhelmed. If you think about the shopping, the prepping, the cooking and the clean-up, it's not hard to figure out why people don't cook (or want to) much any more. For me, the trick to this is doing it regularly. My tips are mostly about planning (short) increments of time, but doing something everyday. I keep binders with my regular favorite recipes, with notes to myself for substitutions or tips for making the process easier. If I find half a recipe works better for me, I rewrite it; the same goes if I'm doubling for freezer meals. The binders hold the ''plan for a week'' along with ideas for the month, and the Freezer Inventory. I check for ingredients I already have, make a running grocery list, and pull the recipes I want to make for the week to store at the front of the binder. Typically, this way I only do an afternoon of kitchen time two or three times a week or so, as most of this includes cooking and prepping a main dish, cleaning the produce or sometimes making a dessert. Everything gets portioned for easy meals, frozen on a sheet pan, and packaged. You know, I only starting doing this because I never feel like cooking dinner at dinnertime. I admire those (and am actually a little envious of) people who come home and can get quick, easy dinners on the table. I never mastered that. I don't know how people used to make full dinners from scratch. I think they were cooking All the Time! I decided to try and figure out how to make my lack of energy work for me, by getting organized. Today, I'm making a mix for home-made yeasted waffles and oatmeal buttermilk pancakes. We make a double batch on the weekends, and freeze them for the toaster. They are incredibly good for ''fast food''!

Ranch Dressing 1/2 cup Hellmann's real mayonnaise 1/2 cup sour cream 1/2 cup buttermilk 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon minced onion 3/4 teaspoon salt (or 1 teaspoon kosher salt) dash ground pepper 1/2 teaspoon parsley flakes 1/2 teaspoon dill weed Stir together all ingredients and refrigerate at least two hours before serving to blend flavors. *Try adding more fresh ground pepper and 1/4 cup finely grated fresh Parmesan cheese for Parmesan peppercorn dressing. I've made this one before and I like it. Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing Ingredients: 2 cups Sour Cream 1 1/2 cups Mayo 1 cup Buttermilk 3 Tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar 3 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce 2 Tbsp Dried Chives 1.5 Tbsp Fresh Garlic, Minced or Grated 1.5 Tbsp Dill Weed 1 Tbsp Dried Parsley 1 tsp Dried Basil 1 tsp Ground Mustard (prepared yellow or dijon is fine, too) 1 tsp Garlic Powder 1 tsp Onion Powder 1/2 tsp Dried Oregano 1/2 tsp Sea Salt 1/2 tsp Fresh Cracked Black Pepper What to Do: In a large bowl, whisk together all of the ingredients until thoroughly combined. Taste & Season to your liking!!! Sometimes I add a little more dill, a little more garlic, a little more chives… Fresh herbs can also be used. If you have an herb garden, go for it. Dried herbs are cheaper and still very tasty! And you probably have all of them in your pantry anyway. Here are several I pulled off the 'net too. I used the last one in the No Peek Casserole and it was good. Haven't tried them yet as just salad dressing, I'm still using up an industrial size HV Ranch packet. Any of these could be made up as dry mixes sans the "wet stuff".

RANCH SALAD DRESSING
1 c. mayonnaise
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. parsley flakes
1 tsp. garlic salt
1/4 tsp. Accent
1/8 tsp. pepper
Mix together and serve. Note: tastes like Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing. Dry onion flakes may be added if desired. I prefer the dressing without onions.

HOMEMADE RANCH DRESSING
1/4 c. powdered buttermilk
3 tbsp. dried minced onions
3 tbsp. minced dried parsley
1 tbsp. dried minced chives
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. ground celery seed
1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
In a bowl or jar which you can cover - combine all ingredients. Mix well. Store tightly covered until ready to use. Makes about 3/4 cup mix. Enough to prepare 8 cups of dressing.
For Ranch Dressing: Combine 1 1/2 tablespoons of mix to 1/2 cup milk and 1/2 cup mayonnaise.

Ranch Dressing
Â 1 cup mayonnaise
Â 1/2 cup sour cream
Â 1/4 cup of milk
Â 1 teaspoon parsley
Â 1 teaspoon garlic powder or mashed fresh garlic
Â 1 teaspoon chopped onion
1. Just mix all of the ingredients together.
2. Chill for at least an hour before serving.

Â 1/2 C. mayo
Â 1/2 C. yogurt
Â 1 tsp dill
Â 2 tsp parsley
Â 1/4 tsp, garlic salt
Â 1/4 tsp. onion salt
Â 1/4 tsp. pepper

Wisk all ingredients together and youÂre done!
