What's the best way to do this?

I have more than one question, so will do two different posts. I want to get a roast out of my freezer, but only want to use half of it. I always heard you should not refreeze meat, but how do I go about doing this? Partially defrost in the microwave, or what? Sorry to seem so dumb but I don't know much about this. Thanks. Barb

What if you go ahead and cook the whole thing and then freeze what you don't eat in meal size portions?

In my decision time available, that is exactly what I have decided to do. Thanks, arkansas girl. Barb. Next time I will have them cut it at the market.

At this point in the spring lawnmowing may not work. If the new growth is above the mower blade you will chop the ends off, and it won't look right with square ends.

My front yard landscaping beds are all trench-edged and I have no problem containing the groundcovers. Make a V cut, but at two different angles. On the grass side, cut straight down perpendicular to the level of the grass. Then go stand in your plant bed and make an angled cut to form the V. My trenches are about 8 inches wide at the top. The pachysandra roots will grow toward the exposed soil of the angled cut and turn back toward the soil of the bed. Try not to fill the trench in with organic mulch. It will eventually break down, creating a growing medium for the pachysandra roots to grow into and you'll have the same problem all over. This type of edge also makes mowing easy and edge-trimming unecessary.

While "GypCrete" & "ThermaFloor", registered products of the Maxxon company are specifically designed for framed floors, designed to be lightweight, they appear to have some qualities that are beneficial to slab on grade such as less shrinkage, cracking, shorter curing times and best of all, a manufactured product with a warrenty. Because concrete can be mixed in different ways, it is hard to determine which would be more conductive and therefore more efficient. Warmboard is designed as as subfloor system for framed floors, but can be used on slab on grade. The newly poured concrete has to cure for a minimum of 28 days, with a moisture test prior to installation of the Warmboard or rot may occur. you may use test plug on the floor drain or cut it off and cap it. Then cement over it. For the utility sink drain cut it off below the floor and cap it, Fernco has rubber caps for varying pipe sizes. These should be readily available at any home improvement store

1. You can get a stainless steel meat saw.

2. Not the easiest, but can be done. I just did it tonight. I cut a 3 lb block of frozen ground turkey.

Use your longest knife, use two hands. One hand on the handle, and one hand on the tip spine. Using a rocking motion and a little force downward, you will be able to cut thru the frozen meat.

Our Health Department announced years ago it is safe to refreeze meat as long as it hasn't got above refrigerator temperature. So you could in fact have partially defrosted it in the refrigerator, cut it then refrozen the half you didn't need.

Whatever you do - DON'T thaw and refreeze it. I almost killed my husband doing this (with a steak) when we were first married and I didn't know any better. He was sooooo sick!

I'm cooking for ONE, so portion, repackage and vac seal about everything. When something like pork tenderloin is on sale... usually 2/pk and one is too much for a meal & lunch. Frozen 1-2 serving sized packs thaw in about 25 minutes in room temp water.

Grew up when frozen stuff was set out on counter in am to be cooked for dinner. Can't remember EVER getting sick... probably just lucky. Bought a whole turkey breast around T-Day, thawed it in cold water till able to de-bone into 2 pieces. Vac sealed hald and never thought twice about refreezing it. hey, it didn't kill me!?!

A little late for the OP, but more as an FYI, as long as the meat is thawed in the REFRIGERATOR, it can be refrozen. You'll maintain a better texture if you can cut and refreeze the portion while there is still some ice crystals in the partially-thawed meat, rather than waiting until it is completely thawed.

If you thaw using the cold water method - where the meat is placed in a bag and completely submerged under a sink full of cold water and the water changed ever 30-minutes - or a microwave thaw, it needs to be cooked immediately, then freeze the leftovers.
