Refrigerator Pickles

Hello Cooking forum! I'm an active member on the garden forums, but haven't posted over here before, even though I enjoy cooking. I thought there was some sort of preserving forum on GW at one time, but I can't seem to find it....

Anyway, I've got a pickle problem that hopefully you guys can help me with. What is the best method for making refrigerator pickles/what is your recipe (if you don't mind sharing)?

I am a hard-core pickle lover. I ate 18 mini pickles in a day- that's how much I love pickles, LOL. Last year I stumbled across a refrigerator Clausen pickle copycat recipe while looking up ways to use up cukes from my garden.

Adapting the recipe a bit I came out with this:
1 tea peppercorns
2 tea kosher salt (I can't handle overly-salty foods)
3 cloves garlic- slightly crushed
1/2 Walla-Walla onion (didn't have flakes on hand)
Pickling Cukes -quartered
2 cups white vinegar
2 cups water
Dried Dill

I really disliked the results. While I enjoy pickled foods, I hate a sharp vinegar taste. These were sharply vinegar tasting and also on the sweet side (assuming it was from onions?). Would simmering the vinegar with spices help mellow the taste? More water?

Any ideas and tips appreciated! ;-)
