Mastercook Software with Windows 7?

I know the topic of recipe software comes up every so often, but to be honest I haven't been reading the posts because I've used Mastercook for years and didn't feel like I wanted or needed to make a change.

I bought a laptop yesterday (my first - yeehah!) and I'm in the process of loading the programs on that I use, Mastercook among them. I have the older Food & Wine version 5.02 by Sierra, and there's now a 9.0 version available from Valusoft.

I thought the older version would work, but I'm not able to import recipes so I think I need to upgrade, but when I check the Valusoft website it says that Windows 7 isn't a supported operating system so there may be some problems that they can't solve.

So I'm wondering - is there anybody out there who's been able to use the 9.0 version with Windows 7?

And at the risk of beating a dead horse - if you used to use Mastercook but switched, which program did you switch to, and were you able to transfer your MC files to it easily?

I'd appreciate any feedback - thank you :-)

Sorry no hyperlinks. Things are kind of busy right now.

I don't know if you want to get into this sort of thing or not, but Windows 7 should have a Windows XP Compatibility Mode that makes it possible to run older 16-bit programs like MasterCook. It may take some work-arounds, but as a MasterCook person myself, the last thing I want to do is switch programs after all these years.

The one remaining issue is the web import feature may not work with Internet Explorer, but if you have FireFox there's an add-on that will fix this problem. The blog discusses the issue.

This may be more than you want to fiddle with, but if you do things step-by-step, I think you'll be able to keep your old MasterCook. It's a little investment at the front end for a big payoff. At the very least it's worth making the attempt (It's time but not money.) before investing in a whole new software program.

I have Master Cook 11. Does it work with windows 7 or is there a work-around?

Long ago I heard a comedian say that some teenage years are awkward because kids think they're cool, they think they've learned "Where it's at/What it is" but it's usually before they learn what to do with "it". This story has some of that. Unless you're trying to speed up frequent read/write ops of very large files, RAID 1 is useless. RAID anything is never backup anyway and given how many drives get fried by power surges, lightning or power supply problems, backing up anything to a second internal drive is unlikely to be of value for disaster recovery. It's onboard, in the same box, in the same room, and is vulnerable to have the same problem at the same time as the primary drive does. If PC access is mission critical for making money (work or business), make sure you have or have immediate access to a PC spare. If this is just a personal make-work project or you're trying to plan ahead to avoid inconvenience, I say cool down and calmly get or make recovery disks. I'd ignore the second internal drive.

Thanks everyone. I already did the Word update bc. I realized that my daughter would be continuing to bring work back and forth from school. I'm pleasantly surprised that an older version of Microsoft Word is update-able - without being asked to pay for an upgrade. Bob - thanks for explaining what that update is doing. Now I'll know what .docx documents are. I have an older Word myself and all the files are .doc - but it explains the trouble I've had in an organization where we send each other word documents - some must have the newer word and some the old. I will get the Windows Media Player 11. That's a program she uses. One of the reasons I asked here is bc. googling often gets me descriptions/info I don't understand. This is what I found on the update for root certificate: "This item updates the list of root certificates on your computer to the list that is accepted by Microsoft as part of the Microsoft Root Certificate Program. Adding additional root certificates to your computer enables you to use Extended Validation (EV) certificates in Internet Explorer 7, a greater range of security enhanced Web browsing, encrypted e-mail, and security enhanced code delivery. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed." I have no idea what that means and whether I should get it. What I found when I googled Update for Windows XP (KB971513) sounded either scary (maybe it would mess up the computer's functioning) - or at least not clear as to it's value - so I'll skip it unless somebody hear knows differently.
