The skivers look good. Report back on how they stored in the freezer. Although I don't know why they wouldn't come out fine.

I know the company and the meal was special. I'm sure she is used to you coming up with interesting things for her meals. Did you have to explain to Alice what the aebleskivers were all about?

The ones in the photo were my very first aebleskivers, ever. The next batch was a bit brown. The third batch didn't get turned fast enough. The last batch was perfect as was the first. The recipe filled the pan 4 times. Lee, I explained the pan and aebleskivers to Alice. She had them years ago but she was small and doesn't remember them. They are only served at one place in town and I don't think they are found too many places here in NorCal.

Sharon, Alice is in her third year of college as a viticulture major. She is starting to get serious about what happens after graduation. Yes, Mitch, she is pretty grown up these days. She even picks up the tab now and then. But she's still my baby.

It was a quickie visit and we had a lot of fun. We biked all over town and shopped the opening day of the farmers' market. The cute hummus vender with dreadlocks was so smitten with Alice he gave all of her money back instead of change. She counted it and handed the purchase price back. We ate out at her favorite places and had coffee at the coffee house downtown several times. We had pedicures and hugged and talked a lot. She just returned from a backpacking trip to Zion National Park. She and a couple of friends are moving to a house by the beach this summer. When I grow up I want to be Alice. :)

Wow. Our little girl is all grown up. She was a beautiful little girl and now she is a beautiful young woman. You've been so good to share your gorgeous children with us all these years, Eileen.

What a beautiful young lady!! Sounds like you had a fun visit....biking....visiting the coffee house...huggin'....good for you! They are young for such a short time....and "birds and children fly away."

Heh! I thought you meant you could only eat a half batch, as in half a pan! Those look so good.

I agree with Gina that Alice is even prettier in person, partly because of her personality, but the photography is nice also, and I will look for an aebleskiver pan the next time I am in Solvang. I might look for wooden shoes there also, but the last time I looked, they did not fit my instep. Maartje got some new wooden shoes when she was in Holland in February and thought I should get some too.

Don't forget to let us know how the frozen aebleskiver come out. I think I would make a half batch as well - that's what I do with pancakes and waffles.

Eileen, the abelskivers look delicious but Alice, my goodness, I still remember that picture when she was about 12, jumping her pony at competitions. (sigh) And those "formal" prom pictures.

When the heck did that happen? She's beautiful, but so grown up.

Yeah, it happened to my girls too, somehow we can't stop it.

I was inspired by the "skivers" thread and bought some at TJ's to add to Easter morning brunch with our gang. They were pretty doughy and not like the light bites I recall from Solvang! I think a trip up there is in our future too!

Thank you, everyone. I love having Alice home. It doesn't happen very often these days.

Our darling little girls have grown up into lovely young women. What a wonderful journey we've had.

Ebay has quite a number of aebleskiver pans, some at very good prices. Mine looks like the Griswold ones but it is a generic. The batter doesn't seem to notice the difference. Smiles. I watched a few videos for technique. The Danish ones were the best though I couldn't understand a word! I did see that some of them used cardamom and lemon zest in the batter. That sounds delicious to me. I think I'll do that next.

Ellen and Lars, Solvang is a bust. Nothing Danish about it any longer. The poor excuse for aebleskiver you can find are about the only remnants of anything Danish - slapped on to your typical stale diner menus in most cases. Solvang is just a town for tourists who come up for the nearby wineries in Los Olivos and such, and families who still think they are coming to see a Danish town. Pity.

Alice is a true beauty! I'm sorry to hear about Solvang, one of the haunts of my youth and the birthplace of a good friend of DH's. Truly, I miss the California of my youth, but not the California of my adulthood.

I remember visiting Solvang as a newly married younger self in 1986 or '87. It was cute but touristy and I wasn't all that interested in anything there. We drove back up the coast slowly and visited Hearst Castle and Big Sur played a few par 3 golf courses as we made our way back.
