For You All, A Batch Of My Gram's Lemonade! (Pictures)

Hi everyone,

I just got done making a batch of my Gram's lemonade. Here is the recipe:

4 lemons

1 cup sugar

Water (I use warm to get the sugar dissolved)

Ice cubes

Slice lemons thinly and place in a large bowl; sprinkle sugar over lemons. Mash with a potato masher or heavy spoon (it'll look like a lemon slushie lol). Pour into pitcher or bowl. Add water and ice cubes. Place in the fridge and let chill. Makes 1/2 gallon.

Here are the pictures (along with a slice of Pink Lady Cake when I first tried it. I still have some cake left and I'm expecting company tomorrow (an old high school friend I haven't seen since graduation), so I figured I'd do something special. :)

The proof is in the pictures! I totally agree with Al's statements. I often say that I wish I had been exposed to a few basics in plant science and physics long ago, when I first became interested in growing plants, but the basics are not what circulates through the general gardening community, nor are they anything promoted by the gardening industry. The first thing I wish I had learned is that growing in the ground or garden, and growing within the confines of a container, are two very different environments that each require a different approach. I've come to think of the garden as organic, and growing in pots as more inorganic and something I have more control over. I think if I'd had that separated in the beginning, I'd have had much better success, and a lot sooner. I'm also fond of saying that a green thumb is nothing more than applied knowledge. And that's very true. There's no luck or magic to growing plants. It's all skill from applying the basics of science and physics. And the more I learn, the more I realize that the industry exists to help itself, and not necessarily the gardeners. Once we learn what containerized plants really need, we are more or less forced to search down various ingredients and mix our own mediums better suited to how plants respond when placed in a confined space. As Al says, we can't make a case when it comes to personal choices or convenience, but we certainly can show how various practices benefit or limit our plants. And to be honest, I don't find it inconvenient to grow healthier plants with healthier roots, anyway. To me, it's worth it to mix my own mediums custom to my unique environment, more in keeping with what is beneficial to my plants from a scientific angle. So, I save organic methods for the gardens... and I go with a more controllable, inorganic approach to growing in pots.

I knew I got Flintknapper's name wrong! LOL Yes, Cindy you need to add bacon, ham, or fatback to your beans and peas if you want to be a Southerner! ;) I also like cowpeas better than any butter beans, but I was born and raised in SC. I have been experimenting with seasoning the BJBB's. 20 minutes does seem a little short on cooking time, but I usually use my crockpot for cooking them. Were they kinda hard in the middle? Did you salt them when you started cooking them? I have found out that the salt needs to be added towards the end of cooking or they will be kinda tough. The best ones I have had were in the crockpot. I put in a slice of bacon and two cloves of garlic, chopped fine and cooked on the low setting for 2 hours. Added salt and cooked another hour. The next best was with a chunk of sugar cured ham. I tried country ham too but the beans seemed tough from the salt,I should have washed the ham first, I guess. They don't break apart like regular lima beans do in a slow cooker and have a really good texture. I have only fixed one batch (or mess as we say in the south) on the stove because I'm too lazy! I need to go out and pick them now but it is 97 degrees in the shade outside and high humidity! Heat index about 110! I'll wait till sundown!

I thought it should be great. I'm such an overly sweet person anyway that I need the extra tartness. :) I like a lemonade that draws your jaw up and makes you pucker! Keep the mistletoe handy! Maybe try it sometime with some pureed watermelon or cantaloupe in there. Definitely would sweeten it up. Some strawberries thrown in and you have a good start to a fruit punch version. Wow, Jenn thought I was Sol ! What a nice compliment to meeeee!!! Here's the Lavender Honey Ice Cream recipe, which I found on line! David Lebovitz' Honey Lavender Ice Cream 1/2 cup honey 1/4 cup fresh lavender flowers 1 1/2 cups whole milk (Susans note: I used half & half) 1/4 cup sugar pinch salt 1 1/2 cups heavy cream 5 large eggs (you will only use the yolks) Âroom temp Sooz's Notes: 2 T vodka (80 proof) to keep the ice cream from becoming icy A bit of gel food coloring to make it look lavender (or whatever color you want) Instructions: Pull the lavender flowers off the stems & measure out the flowers. Heat honey with Â½ lavender, just until bubbles start to form in the honey (Sooz's note: I used the microwave). Remove from the heat, and let sit an hour or so to extract some of that tasty lavender flavor. It may look kinda funny, but it's okay. Put the cream in a bowl. Rewarm the honey a bit to make it runny and pour it through a sieve into the cream. Squish those lavender flowers with the back of a spoon to get out as much flavor as possible. Add 2 T vodka to this bowl. Meanwhile, warm the milk, sugar and salt until the sugar and salt dissolve, and the milk is hot. Separate the egg yolks from the egg whites, and beat the egg yolks into a yellow foamy looking foam. Add the warm milk to the yolks, a tiny little bit at a time, mixing constantly. You have to add the milk slooooowly especially at the beginning. Put the egg yolk mix back on the stove, and heat, stirring constantly over medium-low heat. Use a thermometer for this next part, as it will keep you from curdling the custard base. Heat to 175Â°F. Never stop stirring. At 175Â°F, the custard should have thickened nicely, shouldn't have curdled, and will be ready for the next step. Immediately pour this through a sieve (just in case there are any cooked egg bits in your custard), pour the hot custard over the lavender flowers (which are in the sieve anyway) and into the cool cream. Mix gently, and add the remainder of the lavender. Sooz's Notes: I used violet "gel" coloring and added it with the remainder of the lavender. If you add too little food coloring, it will look a sickly grayish color. Keep adding the gel coloring until you get what color you want. I used the end of a toothpick to add the color, then stirred with a spoon. Cool in the fridge overnight. Sieve out the fresh lavender, and run the mixture through your ice cream maker, using the directions for your machine (make sure you froze the freeze-y canister for at least 24 hours). Then, you slowly pour in the sieved ice cream mix into a the machine while the beater is stirring on low. If you pour in the mixture and then turn on the machine, it may cause a problem as the paddle may not be able to move. Churn for 25-ish minutes. Scoop into a cold container, and leave in the freezer overnight to finish hardening it. Enjoy! Here's the link for the recipe to the Amaretto Cherry Vanilla Ice Cream. Pam, I think it is enough water and ice to make 1/2 gallon, and that looks like a half-gallon pitcher.

Your recipe for lemonade is somewhat similar to what they make (or made) at Hot Dog on a Stick at Venice Beach. It's very good lemonade, and mashing the lemon slices with the peel adds a lot to the flavor. They call their lemonade "Muscle Beach Lemonade" because they first started selling it at Muscle Beach, which was near Santa Monica at the time.

Linda C, there is nothing like homemade lemonade! I haven't had any to drink yet, but I did a taste test to see if it was sweet enough and it was just right :).

Lars, you are correct! I didn't add many ice cubes, just a few and then I added the warm water. That is indeed a half gallon pitcher. Interesting story about Hot Dog On A Stick and Muscle Beach Lemonade! Thank you for sharing! This is the best homemade lemonade I ever drank and I love it when my gram makes it. She makes hers in an old pot and it makes anywhere from a half-gallon to a gallon.

Nice lemonade. I know, it's similar to what I make, except sometimes I add a little vodka. :-)

Looks good. My grandma used to freeze lemon juice in ice cube trays to make frozen lemonade. I like the idea of mashing the lemon peels for flavor.

Ynnej, that sounds like a good idea! I'll have to try that sometime.

Now all I need to do is picture myself on a summer day, with a glass of this lemonade, a couple of BLFGT's and a slice of cake for dessert and I'm good :).

Well, I asked mom where the salt and pepper shakers came from and she said she got them from her mother (my other gram, the gram who's lemonade and other recipes I share are my dad's mother).

Rusty, I hope you can get lemons soon!

Paulines, the plates came from my late great aunt. I don't think it's carnival glass (the cookie jar in the second picture might be though). They are my favorite plates to use. There's also bowls, teacups and saucers.

Love the way your Gram made lemonade. I never used a sliced lemons recipe, either, but you better believe I will now. In fact, I have a bag of about 10 lemons that I bought at the store the other day so Gram's lemonade is on the agenda. Thanks for sharing, Brad. I like the salt and peppers, too. The best things are passed down through families.
