Help for a broken bread machine

Hi,
I have a welbilt breadmachine which was working perfectly.
My friend accidentally put the inner pan in a wrong direction and let the machine run for about 30 min without noticing it. So the ingredient wasn't mixed at all.
After we found out, we put the pan in a right direction and let the machine to make dough. After 10 min, we smelled burning rubber, which never happened before. I was stupid to let the it run for the another 20 min. After that, when I tried to start a new cycle of dough-making, it was dead. The control panel seems working because it would let me select the function. It is just after I hit the start button, nothing happens.

I tried everything I can (double-click, let it sit for days then start it), but nothing helps.
Does anyone here know if I can still fix it or you would recommend to recycle it?

Welcome to the Cooking Forum.

1. What is the model no.?

2. When you hit the start button, do you hear any noise like the motor is running?

3. If you open up the case (unplug first), you may find a rubber timing belt broken. You can buy a new belt to replace ($15.00)

4. Or, you may find the motor has a small over-heat reset button which you can push to get the motor working again.

5. If the belt is not broken, and if you cannot find a reset button on the motor. Get an inexpensive volt/ohm meter and unplug the two terminals of the motor and check the motor's electrical continuity. 0 ohm = burnt motor, and some ohms = burnt power control board.

I am still using my welbuilt/dak. You probably broke (burned up) the belt. I see that individuals and perhaps amazon sellers have them with a wide variety of prices. I don't know if the different machines require different belts but it seems likely.

If you have the original round loaf type, remember that DAK made them first and sold to Welbuilt so you can search for both. If mine broke, I would probably just try to find another bread machine at a garage sale or second hand store. There is a big fan base for the Zo... here, but the welbuilts seem to be as powerful if not more so. I have a Zo. that I got for $15 at our local second hand store. If you are not into 100% whole wheat, I doubt that it matters what brand machine you use.

Actually, if it were mine, I would open the bottom to determine if the belt was indeed broken and search for a cheap belt and wait for one to show up and in the mean time, get another, or now just put my Zo in its place.

That does seem odd -but I completely agree with yaya, just keep an eye on it for the last 30 minutes. What brand is it? You might try googling it. And btw, if your first few loaves are not to-die-for-yummy, don't give up. Mine weren't either, but you can get consistently good loaves once you get the knack of it. Some of the things I did that made a difference: -Get a thermometer, and measure the water temp. -Take the yeast out of the fridge, measure what you need, put that amount into a mug, and then set that mug into a bowl filled with very warm water. I found it helps to do this, rather than using cold yeast straight from the fridge. -Babysit the machine the first five minutes. Some days the dough will be too dry, sometimes too wet, despite your best efforts. Be ready to add a teaspoon of warm water when it is too dry, or a tsp. of flour when it is too wet. Have fun with your new machine!

After the dough has doubled, take it out of the machine and lay it on a lightly floured or oiled surface. Fold over and knead once....and pat it flat.....then roll up and form into a loaf....and put it into a greased pan.' Cover with oiled saran. Then put a 2 cup pyrex measure in your microwave and run it until the water boils. Quickly open the micro and put in your bread pan and let it sit until the bread doubles...or rises above the top of the pan. bake it in the middle of a preheated 350 oven for 30 minutes, turn the oven down to 325 without opening the door and continue until the inside registers 190 with an instant read....if the top looks too brown (all the fruit and honey will make it brown) just lay a piece of foil over the top and continue. Make sure it is done....of it will be soggy in the middle and again with all that whole grain and fruit it will take a while! Linda C

Do you have settings for "light, medium & dark" crust, or something similar to this? (This is what mine says.) Check your machine. If you don't reset it, most machines will automatically go to "dark" crust, which will be tough and chewy. I've learned to use "light" crust on most of my breads, and never more than "medium". I don't have a recipe for you, but the key to getting lots of holes in your bread, like a ciabatta, is to keep the dough VERY wet and sticky... Not quite like a batter, but also not something you could easily "knead" (if you were doing it by hand, which I know you're not) because it would be so sticky... Emily

We were cross posting. Nice info there for general testing, thanks. Wouldn't it be great if there were a thermal reset. I saw some belts for $6 and one for $18. It just pains me if I had to pay $15 plus shipping when I could likely get a used unit for $10 at a garage sale.

I went through this not long ago with a lost paddle for the bread maker I gave to my ex. When I tracked down a source for the paddle on Amazon many of the reviews said it was the wrong one and not as pictured. I couldn't find another reliable source. And the paddle was 15 plus shipping. I found a better machine for 10 bucks at a thrift store.

If you do open it and find a broken belt, take the broken belt to a vacuum repair shop and they may have one that will fit the bill. And it shouldn't cost more than $8 imo

Actually Welbilt bread makers typically use reinforced geared timing belts, which need to be model specific. A regular rubber belt from a vacuum cleaner shop most likely will not work.

eBay has many Welbilt timing belts.
