Every year I make a birthday dessert for my DH's co-worker, usually something decadent. Most of you have seen these pics a few times, but here's a few things I've made for her before. We are close friends with her, so I enjoy doing something for her to celebrate her bday. I'm always on the lookout for something a little more involved than your basic bday cake (not that there's anything wrong with that) and when I saw this, I knew I had to try it. Some lovely person on this forum posted about this blog (www.bakerella.blogspot.com) and I sincerely thank you-it's been great fun to read. Anyways, the recipe itself doesn't look too difficult, but more time-consuming. I'm sure mine won't be as pretty as hers, but one can hope :) Wish me luck please!!!!!

Tracey, I'm excited to see how this works out for you! I've actually had this recipe (or something similar) in my files for a very long time, but hadn't really figured out the logistics of making that many layers at one time. That was the point that tripped me up every time, Because...who has that many cake pans? (Now I get it.) Be sure to post a picture; I can't wait to see it! All I can say is This Person must be a very good friend, or you've got a highly competitive challenge going on...

Hi guys, I can't thank you all enough for your help! The cake came out beautifully, I'll see if I can get pics uploaded tonight. The starburst was a big hit and the starburst balloons were great, and easy. I used scissors to cut them into the shapes & then piped the strings on. Then scattered colored sprinkles over the whole top of the cake. William was delighted with his cake, the cake itself was delicious. Stacy- I made the strawberry filling from frozen berries and used your friend's cream cheese frosting recipe with twice as much cream cheese and butter but only the 1 lb of sugar (mainly because that's all that I had) and it was just the right amount of sweetness for the cake. The starburt balloons prompted lots of discussion on what other candy would work...things like fruit roll ups (or do they still make those square sheets of "fruit leather"?) or airheads (which are supposedly like starburts only already flat). So now, if I've got to make another balloon cake for the kid's party on Saturday I'm not afraid! This sort of cutting out shapes as decorations will work out well for me because while I have a steady hand for drawing, painting or glass cutting I seem to be having some sort of fit whenever I try to decorate with icing. Happy Birthday Ashley! AB, you have a lovely family, and Ashley looks gorgeous with her new hairstyle which goes so well with her oval face. Looks like a razor cut, is it? I did quite a few of those cuts during the punk era, and I always wanted to try a similar cut, but was afraid I'd end up in the emergency room if I attemped do it myself, and never trusted anyone else to do it for me. Blueiris: When I bake in pyrex, I spray with Pam. When it done I let it set a few minutes, then lay a piece of Alluminum Foil over it, put a cookie tin on top and flip it over. Usually the cake is up to the top of the Pyrex , so it won't drop. I let it set for awhile, then try to ease the Pryex off . You should be able to see if it is sticking or not. When I had the pizza place , I had a German Baker helping me. He was a Pastry Chef. One day he decided to Bake a Wedding Cake in the oven which was about 550 Deg. He opened a Brown Paper bag, laid it in the oven on top of some newspapers, Laid the cake ring on that and poured the batter into the ring. He put another news paper on top. He did this with 3 different size rings. The cakes baked perfectly. At first I thought he was loosing it. All he kept saying, Dunt Vurrying !!! Das Is Goot !!! Now ve getting a beer. He made a beautiful Wedding Cake with only a few tools and pieces of Looseleaf Paper. He is now a Head Pastry Chef in an Exclusive Hotel in Cherry Hill , NJ. Why am I telling you all this ????? LOU

Boy, Tracey, I admire your courage! The chocolate covered strawberry cake is something, too. I get the idea that your friend likes chocolate. :)

Claire, I have a friend who is a good baker. She freezes baked cake layers, sometimes for a couple of months, then defrosts & ices or frosts. It works well.

That just brought back an angry flashback. I made a layered torte? for my husband out of crepes and by the 15th or so - it collapsed. This recipe looks a lot sturdier. I like the look of your cupcakes. Nice end result with your cake too. I guess you'll be posting a pic when you are done (with a review too please).

Tracey! What you are making is very similar to a Dobos Torte (in Hungarian "Drum Cake") without the Dobos ("Drum") layer. It sounds wonderful!

If I may be so bold, you may want to take a look at the following link ad actually put the "drum" layer on the top. This is an amazing presentation and will knock the socks off the recipient and anyone else who gets a taste.

My mom has made this for me a few times as I was growing up... and I may have to make one jsut because it is unbelievable.....

How absolutely gorgeous that cake looks. But I have a silly question, that nevertheless I feel compelled to ask: how to you cut into that cake without mashing it, or having layers start squishing out from the middle or having it fall apart? The pics show such a beautifully cut 14-layer cake, but what kind of knife do you need to do that? I think even my long serrated bread knife might not be up to the task. Perhaps an electric knife? Any thoughts?

I'm not Tracey, but I do make a lot of layer cakes and I always chill the cake first before cutting it, then let the slices come to room temperature. I've never had trouble cutting a layer cake that way with my bread knife.

Tracey, that just looks amazing, your friend is gonna love it.

I did that apple stack cake from an old recipe of Elery's Mom's and it didn't crumble because the filling kind of seeped into the layers and kept them moist. Mine only had 7 or 8 layers, though, and this looks better because...well...because it's chocolate, LOL.

I want to see pictures when you're done!

Tracey your friend is going to be one lucky person and I would love to see the pictures too. On the link that you provided she also linked to some other places for this type of cake and one is from Smith Island. I love that place and have cooked many things from the cookbook mentioned. How I love the Chesapeake Bay!
