Heads Up-Glass Measuring Cups

I recently bought a 3-piece set of Anchor Hocking glass measuring cups (see link). After 2 months of use, the lettering COMPLETELY disappeared. Actually it was there one day and gone the next.

I contacted AH, they told me that it was the LemiShine and/or detergent pacs. I use both, I have VERY hard water so I use LemiShine about once a month. They graciously offered to send a new set to me and advised me that they are in the process of changing the paint to one that will withstand these detergents.

Cathy, please tell me more about Lemi-Shine. I just looked at the website; never heard of it before. I have... fluctuating hard water. Meaning I have a water softener that sometimes produces soft water and sometimes doesn't. I am afraid to add the softener the dishwasher instructions say is needed for hard water, because I have no idea how much I'd need at any given moment, and too much, combined with the detergent would be very hard on the dishes. Of course now I am worried about sclerosis of the dishdrawers. Maybe Lemi-shine is the answer? Do you use the liquid?

Karen, I use the powder. Last year I stocked up because there was word that production was going to be discontinued. It wasn't available for awhile but now is back on the shelves. Perhaps they changed the formula. There are a lot of reviews on Amazon, perhaps you can find answers if you have specific questions.

Had I read this, I would have know it would take out the paint on my measuring cups.

Excuse me Tina, are you implying we don't celebrate the "meaning" of Christmas because we enjoy giving to each other? My DIL's father is considered a "Pillar" of the Church (Babtist) they attend, and I can assure you we do celebrate the meaning. All year long. We all look forward to the Christmas Prayer he prepares. He leaves out no family member who may be ill or in pain or not with us. We've always celebrated the meaning of Christmas. Giving gifts is part of the meaning. Three Wise Men? :) I do remember last year around Christmas it seemed that the majority of this board didn't like to exchange Christmas gifts & I found that kind of odd. That's okay though, I have no problem with it. But please don't make me feel like Christmas is only commercial to me. And f/t/r, my son's write me short letters/notes all during the year, each and every year, mostly in cards, even though they live near me. They're the most beautiful words I've ever read. I cherish them and have saved each and every letter/card. I watch my grandson every week during the school year, and about every few weeks I go into my son's office and set a note on his keyboard that always says, "Mommy loves you," or "If you were little I'd rock you." Now my son tells his 2 year old, "When you're old and gray, I'll rock you." I end all my letters and cards to them by saying, "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as you're living, my baby you'll be." So we have PLENTY of love and we also love to GIVE to each other at Christmas. What's so wrong with that? And how did this thread end up about whether we should or should not give to those we love at Christmas time?

Yet one more person who reaches for their glass Pyrex measuring cups. I was given a gift certificate to King Arthur Flour and purchased a 3-piece nesting set of Zyliss measuring cups/with lid, thinking how wonderful they would be - light-weight and how much less space they would take up, but was sooooo disappointed! You can't use them in the microwave and the red paint RUBS off just from nesting them together as well as use (I've never placed them in the dishwasher), so it was back to my 4-sizes of Pyrex measuring cups - the two largest ones were my mother's. I love my little OXO slant 1/4-cup measure and use it all the time. I had a 2-cup OXO slant measuring cup and the handle broke off soon after it was purchased, as well as the printing rubbing off. Can't help you with an egg slicer. I just use a knife. FYI - When it comes to dry measuring tools, there is no such thing as "accuracy" for measuring cups and spoons in the U.S. - especially if you purchase "novelty" measuring tools. There are NO standards set for the sizes of them. So if you think one set of measuring cups may hold more or less than another set you own, you're probably right. -Grainlady

All glass doors on uppers or mix it up a bit?

We also have a mixture of glass and no glass upper cabinets. I won't post pictures because I post them too much. But here's how we decided on which to glass and which not too: First, it was a complete compromise between my husband and me. He thought we wouldn't be neat enough to keep all-glass cabinets pretty, and I wanted desperately to display my nice glassware. The solution was to make some doors with glass, and others not, even in one bank of cabinets. When you first walk into our kitchen, the first thing you see is the wall with the main sink. I thought those upper cabinets should be the prettiest, so we put glass doors on the double cabinets directly on either side of the sink, and no glass on the outside of those same cabinets. It works, I think, if you keep symmetry and do keep those cabinets neat. He agrees that the display spaces are nice, and I agree that it's a relief to have some place to hide our miscellaneous stuff, like kids plastic cups from various restaurants, the vitamin collection, measuring cups, etc.

Just a funny story about my late DMIL....She always kept cookies in a tupperware container in the oven...Well, you guessed it, one day, the oven got turned on and the tupperware melted...Not telling anyone, she put this melted "thing" out on her back porch and asked everyone what they thought it was.....No one guessed it was at one time a container full of cookies....It really looked like a piece of art...We've often talked about Gram and her taste in art.....

I've been using LemiShine for over two years, in every DW load. I just double checked my measuring cups and can't see that it's had any effect on mine. They are all Pyrex. I know they get run through the DW at least five times a week.

I have hard water with a lot of lime in it. LemiShine has made all the difference in the world, everything shines now. I use about one tablespoon per load of the granular type.

I was curious as I have never heard of lemishine and here is what I found(link below). I just might go buy some citric acid as it is cheaper.

A friend of mine recommended LemiShine to me just last weekend. I thought my clear glass items that had gone through the dishwasher were "etched". I will definitely try this if you say it works!

My old set of drinking glasses is in a box to be thrown out....perhaps I should test it on them!

I've never heard of LemiShine, nor have I ever used it. But I never wash my glass measuring cups in the DW because the markings always come off over time, regardless of my detergent. Maybe some folks don't mind replacing them frequently, but I do, so for me, it isn't worth the convenience of doing them in the DW.
