Wokers What Do You Think...

I've never considered an electric wok because as you all know they don't produce the heat necessary for stir frying. This Breville has received great reviews. Yes, I know it's a storage problem and it's expensive, but it sure is sweet looking.

I would never consider it. The maximum heat listed (425F) isn't high enough for stir frying, and I doubt that response is as fast as needed.

I got a flat-bottomed carbon steel wok from the wok shop, link below (no affiliation), when I got my induction cooktop. It isn't perfect, but it is OK. It will do a better job than any electric wok. JMO.

I saw that wok in the new W/S catalogue. Agree with Cheryl. Not hot enough and why bother 'cause I've got induction with better control. With my Electrolux range I don't need a slow cooker, electric wok, electric panini maker, rice cooker, dehydrator (although I had two but lost them to Sandy but won't replace), and a lot of small appliances. You won't either after you've gotten through the induction learning curve. :)

I made all nine in two days. Maybe I do something different. I stack and glue the pieces all at once. I don't have the patience to wait for each piece to set...the tall thin one is my favorite. I found Candle sticks and the mini vases on top at one yard sale Saturday Morning and had it put together as soon as I got home. If you want to see them close up click on the picture and I have singles of each close up in the album on Picasa. I must confess the red birdbath is simple clear glass that I have painted with glass paint. I wanted to try my hand at revers painting on glass. I am please with the results. I may have to make another painted one I have lots of clear glass but color sure makes a statement. When I started I was only gonna make one or two, Because I had no interuptions I just kept going! I wanted One of each color of the rainbow! LOL They will all be displayed in one Bed, held in with sand then Mulch. I also found Brand New White vinyl edgeing to use but I want to paint it first or at least wash it with some color. I am worried about Hurricane season. LOL Here are some pics of the bird bath. I posted this stool photo as a suggestion for remodel-mama a few weeks ago. As far as I know, no one owns it here. I love it! (Obviously.) Just the right combination of comfy/contemporary/industrial/vintage. Versatile. Cool. On top of everything else, a good price! Seems like it is worth waiting for, but you have to stop looking if you order them. I have two sets of stools, and still don't have the ones I originally loved, because they were on backorder for so long and I gave up waiting. Shoulda kept waiting.

Shades of Idaho, your cabin sounded perfect. We have a silo and it is on the older side of style. I love the roof and have always dreamed of building a room by raising the roof and wrapping an exterior stairway to the top. We are fairly near a river valley and I am sure the top of that silo would bring it into view. I thought about having windows surrounding the top for 360 viewing. Just a dream though. Nancy, I like the idea of a wood stove. It would be something I'd do down the road, if the warm weather cabin use extended into fall and winter. DH and I were, once again, looking at site location and there is a spot really close to the house that could be used for this shed. Like the idea of having place for water pitcher. Moccasinlanding, love the idea of french doors. keeping the back without windows is a nice option, providing a spot for privacy. I was hoping on french doors so much. We would have to find them used and functional. I do need to do a Craigslist search. There is a lumber yard that sells windows that are returns or miss ordered. I will need to see if they have anything that could be useful for this project. I am thinking that narrow windows would work, the studs are 24" on center instead of the conventional 16". If I got something narrow, I wouldn't have to have structural headers, I don't think, because there would not be any cutting of the studs, only the cladding. I think a row of clerestory windows would be fantastic over the door, especially if I had to use a conventional door instead of french. Several of our sites would allow access to our wifi, and close to the bathroom/shower facilities. The one remote site, way north of the barn, is a good location for real retreat, and a composting toilet would be very handy. The sites close to the house, DH said we could run power to it. Like was done years ago to brooder house. I am not sure about that, as it might be bumping up against code. I want to keep this simple with regards to getting others involved in my business. Thanks you guys for the input it is very helpful in helping keeping me inspired. This isn't going to happen over night thats for sure. So I will be posting on this project now and again over the summer. This next week I will be going on my own week retreat up in Minnesota. I do it yearly. I think of it as my adult "camp" time. I loved camp as a kid. This is a Buddhist retreat, and for most of the 8 days it is in silence. Up at St Johns University in Collegeville, near St Cloud. Magnificent campus!

Thanks. It's so darn slick I need reinforcement not to buy it. Here I am trying to get rid of stuff (FreeCycling) then I get side tracked with the slightest kitchen tease.

I second the wok shop recommendation. Get a lightweight carbon steel wok with a wood handle and a helper handle. The lightweight helps with the fast heating to sear the stirfry ingredients and makes it easier to toss. Carbon steel works beautifully on induction. Same goes for skillets and crepe pans from DeBuyer

How often do you use a wok? At that price, your cost per use will take a long time to get below even $1.00 per use.

Another member of the stove top wok camp! I've had my Joyce Chen Peking Pan for over 25 years, use it all the time, hangs safely out of the way in the pantry when not in use, cleans up easily, thin metal, heavy, heats evenly. I think mine has a non-stick finish, which is still in pristine condition. I use nylon, silicon or wood spatulas in it to stir fry. Works for me!

Cathy, what about the Breville appeals to you visually? Why is it tempting you when you seem to know that electric woks are poor performers compared to stovetop? I think it's pretty plain looking - I don't see the same "slick" that you are seeing. Just curious.

Tricia, I like Breville appliances, it is higher wattage than others, it's not pink or red, and has great reviews. I struggle resisting stand alone appliances, I have a garage pantry full of them. So of late, I don't purchase "stuff" without vetting and the CF is my go to place for vetting kitchen "stuff". I DON'T NEED MORE STUFF.

lol Okay, I understand that. I was attracted to that little mini-pie baker thingie. I need that like another hole in my head but I still look at it when it shows up in a catalogue.

I Have this Wok!!!!! And LOVE IT!

It gets very hot - it is easy to clean - it is big, but I have the space in a large cabinet over my refrigerator; because it is an appliance I do not use everyday, I don't mind the inconvenient storage.
Any wok that size would be a storage problem.

I like Breville .

When I asked for opinions here last year about this wok, I got the same negative responses about using electric woks in general. I have a smooth top electric stovetop. If I had gas, perhaps I wouldn't want an electric wok. It gets very, very hot, and retains the heat. I love this Wok.

I bought it at BB&B with a coupon. I had to order it from their store, and received it within a few days.

Go for it. With a wok you can:

1. steam food on a large plate.

2. Cook with Chinese bamboo steamers.

3. Make smoked food.

It helps to get a high-dome cover (cheap) for the above.

For a long time my niece had a wimpy gas stove in her home. She bought an electric wok - not sure what kind, maybe Cuisinart? - and was surprised how good it was. She used it for years before they upgraded her range.

BUT - she does a lot of wok cooking. For her it was worth the cost. Doesn't sound like you would get as much use out of it.

I just suffer the blows and buy what I think will work for my family. ~sigh~ then I give it to one of the kids.

Go for it I say. You only live once and if it doesn't work for you you can free cycle...maybe? Or sell it on Amazon! ;-)
