Ever get on a 'kick'?

You know, where you make something and it's soo good that you make it again and again, and when you need to take something somewhere, that's what you take for several weeks?
Well I have been on a Greek salad kick. Simple just washed, dried and cut up Romaine lettuce tossed with some good green olive oil, with fresh lemon juice over the top, crumbled feta and kalamata olives. maybe some tomato....maybe not.
Yum!!
Earlier I was on a potato soup kick....simple....celery onion and a bit of garlic, sauteed in butter, add as many cut up potatoes as you wish, a box of chicken broth.....simmer about an hour till all becomes soft and add some half and half.
Last summer it was BLT's...I ate them 2 meals a day for about 2 weeks!

anyone else get on a kick? what was your last one?

I'm still on a Living Lettuce kick and I hope to stay on it. It's prolly the first kick I've ever been on that is actually healthy.

Usually I get on a bread or sweets kick. Like cinnamon rolls.

Oh yes...... I am on a Greek Yogurt and homemade granola kick. I have had 1/2 cup of Greek Fat Free Yogurt and a palmful of granola for:

Breakfast
Lunch
Snack in the afternoon
Dessert

every single day for over the past week!

And I still love it. I suspect the day is coming when I won't be able to look at either though...... and that will be a shame. It is soooo healthy!

Not too long ago it was purple cabbage, celery, green onions, grated carrots, diced avocados and cilantro dressed with V8 juice, lemon juice and jalepenos.
When I was pregnant with DD it was grilled cheese sandwiches with sweet pickle relish.
Glad to be past that one!

I remember your BLT kick last summer!

I was on a stuffed cabbage kick for a while, and now I am on a fava bean kick, now that I know you can buy peeled dried fava beans. The ones you have to peel take a very long time (worse than shrimp), although I think they may have a better flavor. A couple of weeks ago I made a fava bean soup that just had fava beans, potatoes, onion, and chicken stock. It was pretty bland, but it let me taste the fava beans. I just bought some Lima beans also because they remind me of fava beans!

I am always on a kick, but mine only last a week or so, and then on to the next. My husband, however, has been on a ramen noodle kick for what seems like forever. He doesn't even want to go out to dinner anymore- just wants his ramen noodles. I have a feeling it has something to do with the MSG. It's annoying, though!

RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

Someone just introduced me to pasta with butter, Parmesan, and truffle salt. I can't get enough!!

 o
RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

We are trying to empty out our garden of last year's carrots so DH can rototill....so we've been eating roasted carrots and potatoes LOL. I love how DS#2 demands them.

RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

In the summertime I go on a tomato kick. Corn on the cob kick. Fresh basil kick. Clams, lobster and and striped bass kick.

Can't say I do that any other time of year.

Unless you count Buffalo Wings kick on Superbowl Sunday LOL.

Smoothies. With greens, fruit, kefir, coconut milk, almond butter, avocado, mineral water, coffee, protein powder, cocoa powder, etc. I busted my blender - cracked the plastic piece at the bottom of the glass - still works but I'll have to get a replacement. Baby spinach blends well, kale not so much! Someone suggested parboiling the kale first, but I've tried kale so many different ways and I am just not that into it! In soup I can stand.

 o
RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

Gina, have you tried Kale chips? That's the only way I've been able to really enjoy it so far. I just busted my blender, too! It still works, but won't for much longer.

RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

LOL, we love my pancakes from scratch using sour cream.
I've never made them from scratch till about a month or so ago. So easy and so good!!!

Oh Pasta Puttanesca is another! We had it both last week and this week again. When we like something, we tend to flog it for a while.

RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

For several weeks I was on the Moroccan Chicken kick once a week. Then I got on a chili kick, once a week for several weeks. I've also had as many as three homemade soups in the fridge at one time in recent months.

During the holidays I indulge in my love of cranberry ginger ale as that is the only time it is available.

I'm just getting back into cooking after the big whole house paint job. Still have to shuffle all my stuff back into place.

Those bretzel rolls - I love them too much! Eating one with an egg on it now - you can use them for breakfast, lunch, dinner, a snack, don't even need a reason - they are so good, and the first thing I made on my new Kitchen Aid mixer that I never in my life had space for before. Once I get the ice cream bowl attachment, I will probably say homemade ice cream :).

 o
RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

Oh, yes. I'm always on one kick or another. Try as I might, I never seem to get on a health food kick, though. It is always baked with butter, or fried, or loaded with sour cream or whipping cream, or chocolate, even sweet tea once. Why can't I get on a salad kick wth vinaigrette? When I eat salad it is with my wonderful homemade bleu cheese dressing...mmmm.

Currently, I am bingeing on sweet potatoes, of all things. Baked, fried, roasted, mashed, candied. My husband thinks we're going to develop an orange tinge. Last night I served grilled salmon, baked sweet potatoes, and carrot discs. You should have seen the look on his face! It was delicious, too, but I have to admit that may have been a bit much. We'll have something green today.

 o
RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

I'm a big sour cream fan. Jasdip, could you post the recipe?

 o
RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

Rice, I get on rice kicks and don't even realize it until one of the kids will say something like, "Mom, do you realize that we've had rice the last three nights in a row and we're having it again tonight?"

I mean, it's like if you're going to cook rice for something, then you cook a big batch so you have enough for Fried Rice tomorrow night, right?

It's not like anyone at this house would complain if they ate potatoes four days in a row. sigh

RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

ynnej; What a cheap date you DH must be! What do those ramen noodles cost? All of about 50 cents a pack? Or are there 'high grade' ramen noodles now?

Living alone as I do almost everything is a 'kick' as I have to keep eating whatever it is till its gone if its something that doesn't freeze well. If I do freeze it I may not want to look at it again for months and months.

I wish also I could get on a celery kick.

 o
RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

Teresa, I've been mixing cranberry juice and ginger ale together since the 1970s - they are both always available, although I can no longer find frozen cranberry juice that is not made with sugar, and so I buy unsweetened cranberry juice in a bottle and sweeten it with Splenda to mix with diet ginger ale.

Maxmom, you can buy much better ramen noodles at Japanese markets, as well as fresh udon noodles. I have found decent ones at Korean and Indonesian markets, but the Japanese are the best with Korean being a close second. I still have to check the sodium content, however. I had Japanese noodles yesterday for lunch, and I added dried vegetables and wakame to it. I also heated it in a pan and added an egg drop to it. Sometimes I add ginger paste, sesame oil (or toasted sesame seeds), and lime juice. It's still very quick and easy, and I keep the soups as an emergency lunch.

Jessica here is the pancake recipe. If I make the full recipe, I freeze the ones we can't eat, otherwise I just cut it in half for the two of us.

Sour Cream Pancakes

2 tbsp butter
2 cups flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups milk
1 cup sour cream (regular or light)
1 tsp vanilla

Microwave 2 tbsp butter until melted.

In a large bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Make a well in the center.

In a medium bowl whisk eggs with milk, sour cream, melted butter and vanilla. Pour into flour and stir just until mixed.

Immediately melt 1 tsp butter in large frying pan or griddle. Use 1/4 cup measure for each pancake.

Bretzle rolls and blueberry anything for me as of late. Love that roll recipe and I've been trying different blueberry muffin recipes from recipes shared here a few weeks back. Not to forget pancakes and waffles. I'm about out of berries that I had in the freezer. The family and office crew are happy campers right now.

Look out when the local corn is ready not to forget tomatoes and those blt's too.

RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

I just bought sour cream, and my bf just asked what I wanted for breakfast :-D thank you!!

 o
RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

Asparagus topped with a poached egg and truffle salt. Everyday this week for breakfast. The super thin asparagus is in season here so it is abundant and cheap.

What are we having for breakfast tomorrow? The same. It will be new for Mister tho.

 o
RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

Thanks Lars. I tend to equate things with what's available to me in my small town. How I wish I lived somewhere where non-traditional American food was readily available.

I was remembering years ago when we lived in a northern college town and rented a room to an impoverished student.
He managed to live for months on those little cheap packets of ramen. Needless to say, he frequently shared our dinners.

RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

I have been making Sweet Potato Hash for breakfast at least once a week for more than a month! Link below. I use bacon instead of sausage. I'm waiting for DH to say "enough," but so far it has been "MORE."

Here is a link that might be useful: Sweet Potato Hash

 o
RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

That looks so good, and so does the cream cheese braid!

 o
RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

For those using sour cream - reminds me that we sub fat free Greek yogurt and our waistlines appreciate it :-)

 o
RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

Jessy - you could not be more correct on that! Fat free Fage and Ciobani are regulars here now instead of sour cream.... and that I what I have every morning :-)

RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

Oh does that hash ever look good!!

 o
RE: Ever get on a 'kick'?

That hash does look yummy! When I first introduced my kids to solid foods, the only way they would eat their veggies was in hashbrown form. I must have put every veggie known to man in those hashbrowns!
