Cake recipe advice to make a chocolate swirl

I have a cake recipe I was planning to make for Valentine's day. It's a cake mix add-in cake, basically pistachio with a chocolate swirl. My husband does not like very sweet things, and I'd bake it in a bundt pan with no frosting.

The recipe calls for taking 1 cup of the batter and blending in a 1 /2 cup of chocolate syrup, then using that to make the swirl. I don't have the chocolate syrup (just thick fudgy stuff to put on top of ice cream) . I know I can make my own from cocoa powder (already looked that up). But since it's such a small amount, and I have no other use for it if I made a batch, do you think I could just stir in plain cocoa powder, adding a bit of sugar or corn syrup? Thanks for your help.
