5th Burner Question

Does anyone have a range with the fifth burner? I've been looking at two models, one of which has the circular burner and the other an elliptical burner. I've got a cast iron griddle that I want to use and was wondering if the circular burner would be just as good as the elliptical one. The fellow I talked to at Lowes really wasn't very helpful at all.

So anyone here have a range with a fifth burner and does the shape make a difference? I've been told that since my griddle is cast iron either one will work. It currently is designed to fit over two burners, but the current designs now won't work due to the difference in BTU's between front and rear burners.

I'm also wondering if the fifth burner is really all that useful.

Thoughts please.

As long as the lower powered burner provides enough heat for your purposes, I don't see why different BTU ratings should keep you from having an evenly heated griddle.

Can't answer your question about the grill pan because I've got the same issue with front/back BTUs. But, I've got a gas-on-glass five burner range. There are four gas burners and a fifth electric burner in the center. I use that fifth burner quite often for things like warming maple syrup, keeping sauces warm, it's perfect for when I'm making BBQ sauce & want to let it reduce (I use my LC Windsor pan), & the burner is also great for slowly reheating. I also like it for scambled eggs or omelets. Actually, it's useful enough I doubt I'd purchase another range without some type fifth burner. It keeps my main burners available for larger cooking tasks.

I hear you about the griddle thing though...each of my gas burners have a different output. Sometimes, it's convenient & other times...not so much.

I have a diva 36", 5 burner. I have never used 5 burners, usually 2 or 3. However, the configuration, with the 5th burner in the middle, allows me to use 2 large fry pans at once without crowding. I think the 30" would feel too tight. The cooktop can be used for extra counter top in the event you are only using 2 burners. Often I have all the chopped veggies, etc set up on the cutting board right on the cooktop. I don't cut or chop on the cooktop, just use the space if and when I want. So check out how the burners lay out with your most often used pans. You probably won't need the extra burner, but may want the extra space.

I have the GE Cafe with the 5th center oval burner, and while I do use that griddle quite a bit, there really isn't room to ever use 5 burners at once. In fact, if you are using the center burner, you can only really use 2 of the other burners (diagonally) and those only with small pots. Gas on glass is, um, marketing BS. It isn't "easy" to clean up, or at least it isn't any easier than any other enamel range top. And you pay extra for the marketing. I personally prefer the look of the stainless top, and my Cafe has been extremely easy to keep clean. I much prefer it's more pro look to having a back guard, and I really hated that "wide eyed" look that the Profile line went to about 5 years ago. Here is a link that might be useful: GE Cafe

I wouldn't want the master (or any bedroom) right off the family room either. Would it be feasible to bump out the current master? I don't know. But I'd like the 4th bonus room as a sun room with the other room as an office or exercise room off of it, not as a bedroom. Something so far out of the way as the 5th extra room I'd be thinking of as an inlaw suite or guest room, if a bedroom at all. It could also be a craft room, being close to utilities. What else is going on in the utility room other than the water heater? Unless you have a specific purpose that works for you, I wouldn't invest in changing the house for someone else unless you want to spend a good bit on changing the layout so it's more flexible and accommodating. Here's a photo of the cooktop part of our range. It's a GE Profile, model PGB918DEMWW. We wanted (and bought) White on White, but it also comes in Black on Black and Stainless Steel. The White and Black have an MSRP of $1,700 and the Stainless Steel has an MSRP of $1,900. It has an oval-shaped fifth burner. We LOVE this range!!! It has a second, small, oven, too. It's on the bottom, which is fine because it's not something we use a lot, but it is SO handy to have to do the dinner rolls, or to bake a pie while dinner is in the main oven, etc. The bottom oven's highest temperature is 450Ã¯Â¿Â½ which is plenty for everything we've baked in it. AND, it comes with a griddle that goes over that center burner! This range has all sorts of great features -- convection oven, too. This may not be what you like to get into, but it is a very workable and easy solution:

Harbor Freight sells a remote non-contact infrared temperature reader, $30.00?

You just aim at the griddle from a distance to read the temperature, make the adjustment on your burners to suit your cooking needs, front and back burner.

I have a 5 burner all gas stove and like it a lot. I will freely admit I don't use the middle burner often, but when I want the griddle / grill (mine came with ones meant to put in that section) I love that I have it.

I love my fifth burner so much that when I had to replace the old stove (which had one) I spent about $1000 more than it would have cost to get a non-fifth burner stove that fit with my other requirements.
