Movie Day Is Finally Here!!!!! :-)

Hi everyone,

Well, tomorrow is the big day I've been telling you all about! Today, I'll be whipping up the filling for my Tortilla Pinwheels and Mandarin Orange Cake. We got a new KitchenAid mixer earlier this week, so this'll be it's first major use :-). On our old stand mixer (a Hamilton Beach) we used the whisk attachment for making cakes as we have found it to combine the ingredients better than the paddle attachment.

I do have one question, though. When I make the filling for my pinwheels, I'm going to use chopped green onions. Can these be mixed in right into the filling, or should I chop them up tomorrow morning when I make the pinwheels?

Brad, I think I'd go ahead and put them in, I often make a cream cheese based spread because my SIL loves it, and it contains chopped green onions. I usually make it the night before and it's fine.

Well, the cake is baked and frosted, pinwheel filling is made, movies, decorations, and thank you/gift bags are all packed. I'm ready for Movie Day!

Liam Neeson was also in Krull, which was also filmed partly in the Canary Islands. I've seen several other movies filmed there, including The People That Time Forgot, The Land That Time Forgot, One Million Years B.C., The Mysterious Island, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe. Some of Dr. Who episodes were also filmed there, but I haven't watched many of those. I especially like the "...That Time Forgot" series - we have them on DVD, as well as the other ones I mentioned. Kat, it isn't a horror movie, but it's about an insane asylum. The book was great. Our bookclub read it several years ago and we still talk about it. The book wasn't scary at all to me.

Errand days and movie rentals - Netflix a solution?

first off i must say, i LOVE my tivo, couldn't imagine living without it. for movie rentals though, i use my digital cable service with the "on demand" movies. it costs 3.99 for a movie and the movie can be watched any time in a 24 hour period. (this works out well if i order a movie at night when my husband is at work and he can watch it the next day while i'm at work). the digital cable service is a bit pricey at 75.00 a month, but that gives me digital cable in the bedroom with regular cable all over the house. i figure i'm probably making out on the plus side because i'm no longer paying continual late fees on the dvd's that never seem to make it back to the video store on time. my digital cable box has the built in dvr but it's garbage. i much prefer my good old tivo that we've had for 4 years now in our family room. the only problem with tivo and cable is that the tivo and the cable box have problems communicating for channel changes so i wouldn't recommend using the tivo with a cable box. it works great for cable running directly into the television though. i've thought about using netflix, but i was wondering how much control you have over the movies you get. from what i know about netflix, you have a "want to see" list and they choose for you what comes to you when you return a movie. i could see myself still using the "on demand" movies or the video rental store if i really had an urge to see a specific movie.

Perfect quote and oh so true when it comes to selecting art. It's much like someone asking how they should appreciate music, what sounds and rhythms they should listen to. The answer to that will forever be "how the hell should WE know?!" and while some (like tatts) often practically say that, it's not exactly nice. Still, it's like, if you have to ask what kind of art to buy, you'll probably never understand why it even exists. (Is that snobbery? Well ... maybe. Sorry. )

Don't forget to take lots and lots of pictures! I love the sound of your pinwheels - I'm sure they will be gobbled up. Your cake sounds like it will be wonderfully moist with great flavour - can't wait to hear all about your evening...

I'll be sure to share pictures! Other goodies on the menu include bacon roll ups (cream cheese on bread wrapped in bacon and baked-never had them but they sound good lol), popcorn (of course!), lemonade (the kind Annie ever loves so much), ranch oyster crackers, fruit pizza, and then the pinwheels and cake. Looking forward to having a stellar time with my friends! :-).

Sorry, no pictures this round, but what a fantastic time we all had!!!!! The food was delicious and it was wonderful seeing everyone! We watched two movies: Carrie (the old one) and The Neverending Story (both of which most of my friends at the party have never seen before).
