Happy Fasnacht Day

Today is Fasnacht Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday or Doughnut Day. I remember having fasnachts when I was a kid. They are doughnuts without a hole and covered with powdered sugar. I know there are variations of them, but that's what I remember.

I also remember calling the last person to arrive somewhere (or the last person to get themselves going) "the fasnacht". I remember two of my great aunts would come for Christmas each year. One of them held us all up as she fixed her hair and put on her makeup (it didn't help). We would be bursting to run down the stairs and open our gifts, but we had to wait for her. We used to yell at her that she was the fasnacht.

If someone called me the fasnacht, I would start to cry. Maybe Ruthanna or CC remembers this expression.

Anyway, I am giving myself permission to eat a doughnut today. I bet the Amish will have fasnachts at the stand in the farm market.

Do you celebrate Fat Tuesday with a doughnut?
