How much space does a side of beef take up in the freezer?

I have a full size upright freezer. Hubby doesn't think a half a cow will fit with room to spare for a few other things other than BEEF... so if a half is "Hanging" at 315, how much will be actual packaged weight?

~but the butcher that did the piggie I bought has a Feb special coming up at whole or half beef for 1.99lb!!!!!!!!

When I bought the 1/2 pig of course it was only 40lbs of packaged meat..I could have gotten all the flat wraps on one shelf, and I put all the sausage baggies in the door.

I have a about a 22- 23 cubic foot freezer, and one side of it has a shelf ledge built into it. Taking that into account I would say the side of beef I just put into it, took up a little over a third of the space.

Hmmmmm.

The standard Hubby is about 70% the size of a side o' beef.
Take hubby and jam him into the freezer as best you can*, and figure things from there..
.

*Probably not a good idea to put the sausage baggy in the door in this case.

Things to consider in your stairs design: build by code or build by comfort? Read what the code says in your area for minimum rise and tread. Based on your ceiling height, the run and width of the stairs will be the minimum square feet. We built with 'aging in place' considerations so wanted our stairs to be easy to climb, that is, a slow rate of rise. This was listed as a requirement for our design when we started working with an architect. We did a rise less than code (we did 7.25") and a tread of 12". Our stairs are 4' wide and the run is 14'1" with 9 foot ceiling height between floors. They are very comfortable to climb. A friend has a 100+ year old house with a grand staircase and the rise is about 6 3/4". Interestingly, that rise feels too low. We used a rise of 7.25" for outdoor stairs, too - deck and garage to house. I kinda wished we had done a lower rise and wider tread on our deck stairs but we had to draw a line on costs since we were using composite decking material. Wow! For the record, I wasn’t posting a ‘rate my floor plan’. I am not so hard headed that I can’t receive advice, consider alternatives, or answer questions. From reading the responses, it seems our bathroom is so terrible that no one can even give input on how to address the questions I listed in my first post. I find it hard to believe it is so bad as that! Meanwhile only one person has said they have a counter such as I am asking about. I also never said I was unwilling to change things around, just that I didn’t think a simple swap of vanities would work. I even included a bigger view of the adjoining areas to show it would not be as simple as that. What even would you have me tell my architect? That some random people on the internet think her design could be better? I could spend my time trying to justify why we didn’t put the long vanity on the opposite side of the room, or under a window, or why I will be including a toilet room. And then you would either understand why we have come to this design, or you would tear my entire home apart. If you have ever built a home, especially a design from scratch custom home, you know that it is like putting puzzle pieces together. We all have our lists of must haves, wish items, and constraints of design and budget, and time. At some point you just have to decide to be finished. I actually never said I was in the design phase. Walls are not up yet, but none of you ever asked where we were in the build process. I’m an introvert and sensitive person who has had a pretty traumatic last year and a half. It’s taken me a while to feel like I can venture out of my shell and reach out to others-even in a basically anonymous way online. If I had read such negative and generally unhelpful comments a year ago, I would have probably spiraled into a deep depression and doubted myself, what I wanted in my home, as well as the talented professionals I have partnered with to design our home. It’s unfortunate that people can take the time to comment online without taking the time to read the post, think about whether they are giving any constructive advice, or if their tone is derogatory. Of course, anyone reading this has to remember that all 19 people writing to BBB are unhappy. The BBB link cites 88 complaints. You don't know CR's survey results -- because you don't subscribe -- but comment anyway. Why (rhetorical)? I asked if you would provide CR's data on Dacor because I do not have access to CR, and you frequently cite CR on this forum. It seemed like a straightforward request to you. As you said, BBB is only showing unhappy Dacor customers. As I said, perhaps I will be surprised by CR's rating of Dacor. I do not understand your reply to that request. Edited to add: I see that on another Houzz thread about Dacor ranges and fridges, @wdccruise commented: "The Dacor DR30G range achieved a score of 60 (out of 100) and a predicted reliability of "Poor" in CR's testing." You made a point above that quality differs in a manufacturer among the types of appliances it makes. It would be good to know if CR gives a much higher score for Dacor's fridges than the 60/Poor you cited for the range. But Dacor's/Samsung's customer service will be the same regardless of type of appliance.

Good one, Weed.....and pretty close to right on the mark..
Packaged meat is usually about 80% of hanging weight...And that may differ depending how much sausage baggies and dog bones you want to save...

Terri, how big is your "full sized" freezer? 18 Cubic feet? 22 cubic feet.

I think your beef is going to get you somewhere between 225 and 250 pounds of packaged beef, depending on your cutting instructions (less if you get a lot of ground beef, more if you take all the soup bones, etc).

One cubic foot of freezer space will hold about 35 lbs. of frozen foot, so it depends on the freezer size.

Annie, I don't know how big it is..I just pulled the book..which of course doesn't tell me..it shows two freezers on the book...and it's to bloody cold to run out just to check...It is seems to be the same size almost of my side by side fridge.

Linda, I want ground beef, but I'd rather have more steaks and roasts. And of course I'll want all the bones!!

I say at that price buy it and worry about where it fits later. although I am betting your starting price is much lower then mine. Do you have any friends who would go in on it with you?

LOL Robin..it's now morning..and he's "IN" on the purchase..I'll call the butcher this week and pre order my February special!!!

And start eating out of that freezer more the next few weeks. LOL

Good timing. A friend has just brought her beef in to fatten them up for a couple of months and will sell us a half for $2/lb. We were just discussing whether or not to get a half or half of a half...it's been so long since we've had a side in the freezer, we couldn't remember how much space it would take up. And we had no idea if two bucks a pound was a good deal. So it's a half for us. Can't wait for some homegrown beef....mmmm....

katie..the regular price at this particular butcher for whole or half is 2.49lb..so yes...$2 is good.
Around here you can barely get "grocery store" ground beef for 2.49lb..so home grown grass feed LOCAL beef for that..is a really good deal, especially when you figure that that's home much that New York is costing you, and the ribeyes..wooo hooo...
of course with butchered meat you pay a little extra per pound than "you pay" because of waste..but I intend on asking for as much "waste" as I can get away with.. LOL

Don't tell Ricky the sausage bags are going in the freezer.....(Ricky is my steer, slated for butcher next fall).

If you bought 1/2 a hog and got 40# you got ripped!...1/2 a hog should dress at 60-75 lbs...your butcher kept the other 20-25labs and made money off that, also.
