Week-end patio cooking/dining updates

Lars

Last week-end Kevin put a teak oil finish on the teak dining table that he bought the week-end before - see photo below. In the photo, you can see part of the 10' teak bench on the right that I bought for the new path that we just built from the patio to the pergola, using 1/2 ton of sandstone. I'll post picture of the path later. Right now the bench has young orchid cactus plants that I will be transplanting into more decorative pots, as I acquire them. Last week-end we bought a bunch of Tillandsia at Rainforest Flora in Torrance and attached most of them to pieces of wood that we bought for that purpose. The new path now has tillandsia on one side and orchid cactus and bromeliads on the other. It makes the journey from the Big Green Egg to the pergola more interesting, and I am happy that we got rid of the grape vine to do this. We actually bought grape wood for the tillandsia, and the guy at the store said that if we had saved the grapevine that we got rid of, they would have traded plants for it! I had no idea that grape wood was valuable.

On Sunday we barbequed four turkey thighs, a boneless turkey breast (for sandwiches), 5 Italian sausages, some marinated mushrooms, and a couple of ears of corn. It felt like summer, with the food selections and weather, and now that we have lights in the pergola, we can eat outside in the dark months, which are almost over.

I saved the turkey thighs to make tamales, but I will have to go to Aqui Es Oaxaca on Venice Blvd to get the corn husks. I'll get them tomorrow on my way to the Ballona Bromeliad Society meeting in Culver City. I'll meet Kevin in Culver City for dinner before the meeting, and maybe I will find some new bromeliads for the pergola, although it is getting filled up. I have more room for them, now that we built the new path, however.

We passed on buying teak chairs to go with the table because we were afraid they would take up limited space in the pergola, and the iron ones are perfectly comfortable, although we take the cushions inside when it rains, which has been not at all lately, unfortunately.

I will be posting photos of the tillandsia on Photobucket, once I get a chance. I guess I should also photograph our outdoor meals, now that the table is finished. We ate on it in its unfinished state the week-end before.
