Trader Joe's finally entering the Texas market...
Comments (37)Interesting about the different markets. In our town, we have Safeway and WinCo, which are primarily in the western US; a Northwest chain called Fred Meyer (it's also a Kroger brand); and a couple of independent grocers. I rarely shop at Target, so I don't know what our stores offer for groceries. Last time I checked they had a small dry goods section and 3 refrigerated cases. The bigger of our Targets may have a bigger grocery section. We also have 3 WalMarts, 2 are super stores with grocery; and one Costco. Now we have TJ's. Since we're kidless, and our kids are primarily vegetarians anyway, we do almost all our shopping at TJ's. I find that their prices are comparable to the mid priced grocers around. I don't buy too much fresh produce or meat there (mostly get that at Costco), but they DO have a huge vegetarian/vegan selection, so I stock up on a lot of that stuff. I have a weakness for their vegan Pad Thai. I keep a couple of boxes at work for the days I forget to bring lunch. For my household goods, I usually pick those up at WalMart or the cheaper grocery store so I haven't comparison shopped prices at TJ's. But my DD is on a campaign for me to switch to greener goods, so I might check into it. Overall, I guess it depends on what you buy on your normal grocery shopping trips, but for me, TJ's would fit most of our bill....See MoreWhat is good and bad at Trader Joe's.
Comments (6)I don't buy anything frozen at TJs or premade - I go there for inexpensive organic fresh vegetables and fruit, breads & tortillas, cold cuts and cheeses, and dried fruit and nuts. I buy chocolate there as well. I don't like their ice cream, and I don't like their mayonnaise, but those are the only two things that I prefer to buy elsewhere that I can think of. There are many things they do not have, such as grits and cornmeal, and I do not remember seeing frozen juices, but their bottled cranberry juice is the best and a great price. I think I got blueberry juice there also. I don't buy anything from the above list either. Lars...See MoreWoo HOO!!! Trader Joes is coming to my neighborhood!
Comments (33)Like Gina, I am surrounded by TJ's, and I've started going there more often. My previous complaints were the long lines and crowded aisles, but I've gotten over that. As for bread, I'm very impressed with what I get there. It's not La Brea Bakery, but they have some very interesting choices. Last Saturday I bought WW Nan bread in addition to WW tortillas, both of which are excellent. In fact, TJ's by far has the best flour tortillas of any market I've been to lately, although I do plan to visit a small local tortilla place if I can remember to go there before 3:00 PM. Tortillas from TJ's must be refrigerated after opening because they have no preservatives, and I store them in vacuum sealed bags with a small piece of parchment paper between them so that they don't stick. They stay very fresh this way. BTW, I used the nan bread for garlic toast on the grill. Each piece was about the size and shape of a shoe sole insert, and they were fairly thick - at least thick enough to grill. Lars...See MoreTrader Joe’s discussion
Comments (41)I lock my car simply because it pulls in the wing mirrors which I think helps the people parking next to me. Are car parking slots getting smaller? Sure seems that way! If I can help it, I do not carry a purse to the grocery. I put my drivers license and a credit card in one pocket of my pants and the key fob in the other pocket. The closest TJ to me is more than an hour and a half away. I might throw a cooler in the car and go twice a year or so. I’m like a kid in a candy store buying stuff I don’t need! I have 2 packages of the puff pastry in my freezer now. Bought it only because I had heard how good it was. I guess I need to find a use for it since I will soon be without a freezer. I’m giving it to DD and DSIL for the 1/2 cow they are buying. @ratherbesewing, regarding TJ cheese…at all costs avoid the low fat Brie! I somehow picked it up by mistake and didn’t notice until I got home. If you have an old rubber ball, just gnaw on it; same texture and taste!...See Moreparty_music50
