Inauguration Day Parties Anyone?

No, I am not going to get political here,particularly on this forum which I turn to just to avoid the politics. But we are having an inauguration day party and I was wondering if anyone else was planning a party for that day as well. Or if you are not what would you serve if you were having a party for the inauguration.

We will be having Chicago Hot Dogs. Vienna Pure Beef Wieners steamed and placed in a poppy seed bun which has also been steamed. On top of the hot dog will be a ribbon of mustard, my very own relish which won first place at the Wisconsin State Fair, tomatoes, a slice of dill pickle, onions, celery salt and absolutely no ketchup anywhere in the house that day. Obviously we are taking the Chicago theme and since my first job at age fourteen was selling hot dogs out of a hot dog cart that was my choice.

So, what are you or what would you serve that day?

I have to work that day, but we may have a little luncheon celebration here at work. We'll certainly watch it.

I do get to work on Saturday, at the first aid tent at the pre-inaugural rally in Baltimore, it's going to be freezing, but it should be exciting.

I'm hosting a pre-inauguration brunch Sunday. So far I don't have any patriotic or Chicago related items on the menu, so I'll probably limit the inauguration tie-in to my decorations (red white and blue).

The day of the inauguration I will be among the masses trying to catch a glimpse of the parade.

Yes, I know its abit late now but here's some ideas for next year, and for your present giving, I thought alot of the ideas where great previously by the way. Get the e-mail addresses of the parents who children you want to invite, and send a e-invatition, ask them to e-mail the reply. yes electricity, but no paper or fuel in postage and no hassel. wrapping presents, use newpaper, old magizines, they are going to rip it any way, paper bags, for some reason my state you have to have your wine in brown paper? like no ones going to guess what you just brought! or if you have fast food for some reason, save these for wrapping but get your children to decorate them, at the age they are, people think it really cute, make cards out of old paper and pictures in mags, get your kids to make papier mache plant pots and decorate them, if for an adult, stick in a packet of seeds you know they like and if a child, a couple of seeds could be a bean, pea, nesturtium, radish something that shows a result quickly, and some planting medium in a bag, the bags I use are the ones manufacturered bread comes in! Party Favours same thing as presents except you could present something growing athough maybe difficult in October, I am sure someone will come up with an idea, all I can think of is lettice and even my veggie loving children won't eat that! and brussel sprouts just too big, haha!, keep the party simple, my boys love picnics and love indoor picnics even more, I actually produce a more authentic picnic indoors than out, cos I don't have too lug the picnic basket around! rug on floor etc, old fashioned games such as pass the parsell, wrapped in newspaper easy to rig so every child wins a prize, prizes well, I just keep the merriad of rubbish my boys have accumilated over the year in favors, which they examine and then discard, currently I have 9 pensils, 6 mini tubs of playdough, 10 erasers, 6 flying discs and 1 tub of assorted beads from frendship braclets. once you start looking for ways to reuse stuff it becomes easier and easier, your brain just seems to make new connections you will find yourself hovering over the trash can with a used item, thinking, I wonder! today our washing machine died a death, repair man could repair but only if we where prepared to spend $600+ we brought a new one for $420 and on looking at our old machine, I kept saying could it be a composer, husband (who is not a natural recycler but buys second hand most the time and is a great bargin hunter) could it be a fire pit, get away says I! look on the garden forums and sure enough people have used old washing machines for both these purposes, so yes! if I was really really green I would have had it repaired (well I would probably have a wash board and Mangle) but I live in the real world and needs must but there can ways to do it. BTW paper mache pots can be planted straight in the ground and decompose, but I would only do this if decorated for flowers not food! last but by no means least, don't force you ideals on any one by asking them for green toys and paper, it will only get backs up, for example do not judge them, just as you should not expect to be judged for your decisions, it was my birthday the other day and ony one person asked what I wanted, a watering can, okay I expected a big cheepo one and recieved a dinky red posh one, put it does the job and looks pretty, I also got cut flowers which have lasted very well, 3 weeks and counting and as they die off, into the compost they go, a huge scented cantle which is now in the energancy draw for power cuts etc, the pretty cardboard tub it came in will become something to keep sewing bits in or I will put someones gift into, the bags other gifts came in have been squirelled away for rewraping presents for others, and the wrapping paper is in my boys craft box, the Best buy Voucher...oh I used that today towards a new washing machine! Grurr! Wow Karalyn, for someone that has not been in the yard, you still have a nice list. The dessert sounds yummy. I really enjoyed the food you had at your garden party. Amber, I just started growing Miracle Fruit. I read they were supposed to be difficult, but I mixed some coffee grounds in the soil and the first 2 seeds I planted sprouted. You have a nice trade list. I hope I have something you are interested in. Susieqsie, I will be happy to have some Amaryllis babies. It will be nice to meet your friend. I have added a Queen's Tears Bromeliad with some dark pink Cryptanthus in the same pot. I have an Orange Marmalade Crossandra and a succulent bucket with Cryptanthus, a miniature Aloe, I think it's called Zebrina and a start of Christmas cactus. I have a rooted start of Tapestry vine and white Duranta and some Royal Poinciana Trees, although they would do better in a warmer zone. I have a baby that I have not separated from my Ananas Lucidus Variegted, it's a pink pineapple plant. The cultivar is Lava burst. It is actually one of the more striking plants in my yard. I just spoke with Judith (on the phone) this afternoon. Her computer has crashed!!! You can imagine how frustrated she is, especially NOW! I told her I would post this here so everyone would know what happened and why she was not posting. I will start the 'TEA PARTY TIME' thread for her now so that posters can begin their uploading of Virtual tea party settings. When my mother turned 70, we gave her a surprise party and wrote and performed a little musical of her life. She definitely loved that! But our family is into stuff like that. Yours may be more into art, writing, etc. For my 50th birthday, my husband contacted everyone he could think of and asked them to contribute a little anecdote for an album. He put photos in the back. I adore it. I recently did a "this is your life" slide show for a party honoring someone. Her family gave me photos. But in addition to the real photos from her life, we put in lots of downloaded photos with her face photoshopped in (always the same photo of her face, and always just a little too large). For example, when the narration was about her meeting and marrying her husband, there were a few of the two of them together, and then her with Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Homer Simpson, King Kong ... etc. It was really funny to think of things; she is a VERY refined and elegant lady, and we had her getting a tattoo, pole dancing, in a motorcycle gang, on a Tabloid cover, in the Sopranos -- like that. What made it funny was that we kept the narration perfectly straight and played very formal music behind it. It was very well received, and the guest of honor loved it. Do you think your mom might like something like one of these ideas? I, too, think I would prefer something like that to making the guests play games. I think it is so nice of you to make a party for your mother. You don't need to "program" every minute with games, though -- your mom's friends will enjoy socializing with each other.

It all sounds like fun..Hubby just realized yesterday when he was telling me that he was taking off Tomorrow for a Chiro appointment, and then again Monday for MLKjr Day..that he should have taken off the 20th too...so that he doesn't have to watch the festivities second hand. LOL
We'll see if he sneaks another day off next week...

I'm hoping that the some of the boys will get to watch atleast the speech in their classrooms...

I wasn't planning any specific foods...I'm already rolling around Super Bowl foods..LOL

We are invited to a potluck Inauguration party on Tuesday night, with a cute theme: everyone is to bring a dish from a "Blue" state.

Please help me think of something great to bring. (No meat or shellfish.) I think it would be most fun to bring something representing a swing state, especially Virginia, North Carolina, or Indiana (not Ohio, because we're IN Ohio). Ideas? I suppose I could bring Moon Pies and RC Cola for NC or VA, or make spoon bread or corn bread and greens (my favorites that I remember from childhood times spent with my mom's family in VA). I'm not sure how well greens would go over here, though! And I don't know what is for Indiana.

You don't want to know what kind of party we talked about having..........let's just say it MIGHT involve burning something to a crisp! LOL

gellmom: That is a cute theme. I'm in a blue state, Oregon. Things we're known for: Filberts/Hazelnuts, pears, cherries, onions, blueberries, potatoes, cranberries, cane berries of all types, apples, salmon, dungeness crab (darn, no fish), almost all non-tropical fruits and veggies grow here, and lots and lots of grass seed. Not good for potluck though!! :+) Oh! Lots of Christmas Trees too, not so good for eating!

gellchom..I googled Foods of Indiana and came up with a cookbook with Indiana foods. On the picture of the cover are blueberries, pumpkins,Peaches and bison! I take it you don't want to make bison but maybe a nice blueberry cake or bread would be representative of Indiana! Oh also it showed a honeycomb!!

I like the ideas of the home state foods and now I think I better incorporate something from Wisconsin to go along with the Chicago Hot Dogs. Maybe I could deep fry some cheese curds or make a cranberry salad.

bratwurst (or your favorite sausage) cooked in beer with onions is yummy and very Milwaukee - my home town -- and would go nicely with Chicago hot dogs.

We are having a mini inauguration day party with friends. I checked the day after the election and my sons first grade teacher is not going to have them watch, my friend checked with her sons kindergarten teacher and got the same response. So we are both keeping our boys out of school to experience this historical moment.

So we will be a motley crew of 2 six year olds, 2 three year olds, a one year old and then the moms and dads (DH is taking the day off). My friend is making inauguration day cupcakes and I will bring something, probably home made ice cream.

I'm going to a commumity Inauguration party Tuesday afternoon. I'm bringing dessert. After much rummaging through my cookbooks, I've decided on "Mary Todd Lincoln's Vanilla-Almond Cake".

MARY TODD LINCOLN'S VANILLA-ALMOND CAKE

1-1/2 Cups Sugar
1 Cup Butter
1 Teaspoon Vanilla
2-3/4 Cups AP Flour
1 Tablespoon Baking Powder
1-1/3 Cups Milk
1 Cup Almonds, finely chopped
6 Stiffly Beaten Egg Whites

Cream together sugar, butter, and vanilla. Stir together the cake flour and baking powder; add to the creamed mixture alternately with the milk. Stir in the almonds. Gently fold in the egg whites. Pour into two greased and lightly flourd 9" round cake pans. Bake at 375 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out just dry. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans. Fill & frost with White Frosting.

White Frosting

In a saucepan combine 1 cup sugar, 1/3 cup water, 1/4 teasoon cream of tartar, and dash of salt. Bring mixture to a boil, stirring till the sugar dissolves. In mixing bowl place 2 egg whites, very slowly pour the hot sugar syrup over, beating constantly with an electric mixer till stiff peaks form, about 7 minutes. Beat in 1 teaspoon of vanilla.

"It is said that President Abraham Lincoln took little interest in food and eating. However, this delicious cake was an exception and he prounced it the best dessert he ever ate."

I love the idea of the Chicago hot dogs! Wonder if I can get poppy seed buns here.

I think a Mai Tai is in order as a nod to Hawaii.

I am definitely going to add the Martha Washington Cake that sounds delicious. Sorry about the brats but after 25 years in Wisconsin I still cannot stomach the taste of bratwurst. I wonder what the new president and his family will be eating that day?

At least one of the inauguration day meals will include Seafood Stew.

Since I'm on the west coast, I'm just taking the morning off to watch the festivities. I had thought about going to D.C. for the big day, but common sense kicked in and I'm going to be watching from 70+ degree southern California.

Well, I'm making a Meyer Lemon dessert, to signify all the ''lemons'' the Shrub Bush administration is handing off to Obama. It will be a quiet celebration at home, but celebrate we will!

The Mary Todd Lincoln cake does indeed sound good, and that could be Illinois, couldn't it, for that "blue state" potluck? Or D.C. I did kind of want to do one of the "new" blue states, though, and Illinois is almost too obvious.

Thinking about Virginia and/or North Carolina, I had an idea: Moon Pies and RC Cola. Luckily, my supermarket had them both -- in fact, the Moon Pies are "minis," which is even better for a pot luck, I think.

I want to cook, though, so I might make something like spoon bread, pecan pie, or cornbread to go with it.

No festivities here either..It's me and the girls...Teddi doesn't care about nothing other than her sunlight lamp is on..LOL and Jilly was hoping a crumb would drop from my banana or chocolate muffins...THEY DIDN'T..LOL

But I've been watching TV all morning and will continue to do so.

That menu for the Luncheon sounds simple and beautiful.

I would love one of those Chicago Style hot dogs. One of the only things I miss about my old job is Hippo Hot Dogs in Troy, Michigan. They use the vienna beef dogs and they are wonderful. Now I am jonesing for a hot dog! Got the DVR on record so I can watch later. Work beckons unfortunately.

IÂm watching sitting here still in my bathrobe. Wish they would make Inauguration Day a national holiday so all the people could watch and celebrate. I just popped over to Hot Topics to see what the wackos over there are talking about. It seems they canÂt agree weather Michelle is over or under dressed. LOL

Just me here. I am making bread, with a small TV in the kitchen. I keep running to see the important parts on the bigger HDTV.

We don't bother having cable TV, so I didn't pay attention to the fact it's Inauguration Day. Turns out I was politically incorrect, because I had chili for lunch. Texas Style (no beans). Red. (grin)

I am working today so could not do a luncheon but I do have a special bottle of wine that I will share with friends this evening. We will toast the new president and wish him good luck.

I'm making focaccia using 5 minute bread dough.

One of the bosses at work had the tv in the lobby linked up to CNN.com this morning so we could watch the inauguration live. Was funny sitting around with my colleagues and making wisecracks as everyone entered the mall. It was like watching MST3K. :)

The festivities at our house our over. My wife and I will not be attending any balls tonight and both of us are already in out PJ's. The lunch was a success. Chicago hot dogs just the way I used to make and sell them when I was fourteen (which was only a few years ago) working at Helen's Dilly Dog. Each hot dog had a large slice of dill pickle topping everything else on the bun. For a side I made macaroni and cheese from a recipe left over from my days at a black church here in the city. This was our soul food. For dessert I made chewy brownies just because I like them.
Today was a great day to celebrate.

It must have been good...the plate looked like the dog had licked it clean. I didn't get a slice. It was a come & go as you please thing that lasted from 11:00-11:00. I was only there about an hour...wanted to watch at home in case I got all teary-eyed. All in all the food was pretty good. We had the obligatory Mystic Pizza, meatball subs (messy but good!), clam chowder, chili w/toppings, chippy/dippy munchies, several unknown casseroles that were pretty well gone by the time I arrived, a cold sandwich platter, & tons of cookies, brownies, cakes, etc. I don't know what the evening round of food was since I left shortly after the speech (only 3 minute ride home).
