Fresh ginger substitute for ground ginger?

I'm going to be making a gingerbread pudding/self-saucing cake and the recipe calls for ground ginger.

Two questions:

(a) using fresh instead of ground, good idea or bad idea?
(b)if a good idea, how much fresh for a tsp of ground?

This is what it says at the Cook's Thesaurus.

ginger = ground ginger = powdered ginger Notes: Recipes for baked goods often call for ground ginger. Don't confuse this with fresh ginger root, which is used mostly in Asian dishes. Substitutes: crystallized ginger (Substitute 1/2 cup minced crystallized ginger for every 1 teaspoon ground ginger called for in recipe. Rinse sugar off ginger first. This is an excellent substitution in many baked goods.) OR ginger root (Substitute 2 tablespoons grated ginger root for every teaspoon ground ginger called for in recipe. For best results, substitute only half the ground ginger in recipe with fresh ginger.) OR cardamom OR allspice OR cinnamon OR mace OR nutmeg

This is one case where the fresh and the dried are worlds apart. IMO. Martha Stewart has a wonderful Chewy Chocolate Gingerbread Cookie which uses 1 T. grated ginger root and 1 1/4 t. ground ginger to 1 1/2 c. flour. There's a wonderful 'hot bite' to these cookies because of the ginger root. So it should be do-able in your pudding if you want that effect.

Eaglesgarden: I guess because I am a cook and a person with taste. I am not defending ginger anymore that I would "defend" any other important ingredient in a recipe. Boy, I could really run with this ball into ridiculousness. If you replace a particularly significant taste (as fresh ginger is) with something that tastes completely different (powdered ginger), you will not get the same flavor results. Try making your next BBQ steak out of beef jerky! If you have never eaten a steak, the dried jerky might taste OK. If you are concerned about buying a knob of ginger (about 25 cents here), and having the balance go to waste, you may freeze it and grate it frozen into dishes you might make. It combines well with chicken dishes and chicken stock, a variety of pork dishes, and any number of Asian dishes. I absolutely love ginger, but I wasn't able to post to this before. I also love ginger flowers and have several types of ginger in my yard now. The blue ginger is blooming right now (see link below), but I also have red and white gingers, none of which are edible, but some of the flowers have very nice fragrances that are quite unique. As for edible ginger, I keep a jar of ginger paste (from an Indian market) that I use in soups, marinades, and stir fries, but not desserts. For desserts, I use ginger that I keep in the freezer. I should probably grow edible ginger. I bought ginger snaps at TJ's last week-end (along with some other more decadent cookies), but I think I should have made them myself. Jessyf. I lost two very precious maltese's, my little babies, just nine months apart from each other, one just this past Sept. I can't help but wonder if they weren't poisoned w/their food. My little one was only 7 yrs & my other was 12. Just makes me wonder because the info that we're feed maybe slow or hidden for the "Money is Everything" attitude! I can't help but wonder how long we've been getting these poisons in our food products, whether it be human or pet products. It makes me want to scream at the F*&%!!!
