Using pre-cooked blue mussels - heating time?

I hope you guys can help me. I was given two packs of pre-cooked blue mussels in the shell and I'm thinking about adding some to a seafood dish I plan to make for lunch tomorrow. I don't want the mussels to get all rubbery through overcooking, but there are no instructions on how long they should be heated to get them warmed through, so I though I would ask here. The shells range from about 2 to 3 inches in length and I will thaw them before I use them. I'm thinking maybe a couple of minutes would be about right, but I want to be sure. What do you think?

Personally, I might just use them thawed in a seafood salad sort of thing, I would be worried about them getting rubbery too.

I guess you could put them in a steamer basket and just keep checking to see if they are warm....

Mussels don't get so tough from cooking as clams. I don't think you have to worry much about that. I'm thinking maybe 5 minutes or so starting from cold would be about right, but keep an eye on them and use your judgement.

The spreading of a good quality compost is always recommended to inject organic matter into the soil which, when carried out as a spring program, will encourage moisture retention, worm production, and good overall soil which grass seed will grow much better. Pre-emergent is, what it means....a means to prevent the germination of seeds which come from weeds, et al, It is usually applied at a specified time when the weeds are going to seed. Pre-emergent then is a weed seed killer. It is therefore, also a killer of any kind of seed---including grass. I believe a minimum time of interval between application of the pre-emergent and seeding a lawn, is about 6 weeks. This is the reason why the pre-emergent is applied when the weeds are sprouting their seeds which will deny germination of the vast majority ---but not all--of them. The company that did the application of the pre-emergent should have known when you can safely carry out a seeding program. Give them a call.

Good read; thanks for posting it. I found the part on two-step roasting particularly interesting. Altho' I buy the logic on appliances, I don't think I want to give up cooking with gas. "Among the major culprits here are inefficient appliances. If you read the article that Colleen posted you'll understand why some don't open with cooking. The problem for the diners is having to prise them open. I woldn't bother serving closed ones for that reason. The joy of cooking them fresh is that you know that each one that you've cooked was closed and alive when it went into the pot. So you don't have to worry about the safety of a closed one. I might be more concerned about a product that I hadn't cooked myself.

Yes, this is for the kids. My oldest has lunch after fifth hour so he really needs a hearty breakfast that will stay with him for a little while. I made the bacon last night and froze it in papertowels. I zapped it this morning and it tasted good. I baked some of the cinnamon rolls in a can to go with it and gave him a glass of juice. My other two kids had sliced apples. Ds also requested barbeque saandwiches so I cooked up a roast, shredded it, and froze it in portions. If we put it in the fridge the night before, it should be easy to add sauce and zap in the microwave. I think I'll do up the French toast and pancakes this weekend. I asked ds about sausage, but he isn't such a fan of that. We are going to do an assemby line for the burritos, but I still need to buy freezer paper. If you have any more ideas, keep them coming. I agree. Mussels don't easily get rubbery - I am lucky to have a source of fresh mussels whenever I want and cook them often, so I cook extras and use them in a pasta dish the next day. I'd add them when the rest of your dish is hot and bring it back to temperature and they'll be heated through and still tender.

I would assume pre-cooked clams or mussels are already overcooked. So you can't overcook overcooked mussels.

May be just pick a couple and boil them and see what happens.

As a point of reference, the instrux on a box of frozen mussels in garlic butter sauce says cook from frozen, 4-5 minutes then simmer 2-3 minutes.

What are you planning to make? If a seafood stew or similar I'd add them at the end, off the heat or on extremely low heat (below simmer), and try one every minute or so until they seem just heated through but not super hot.

Thanks, Foodonastump. I've mostly been lurking for the last couple of years.

The dish is baby potatoes and langoustines fried in butter with garlic and onions. I figured it would be interesting to add some mussels and a little white wine for variety.
