Happy New Year

Happy New Year Everyone.

DH and I spent a quiet evening at home. We held our annual New Year's Eve dinner on Monday and it was a huge success. First time I have done a cedar planked salmon in the oven. I have only ever done it on the BBQ.

It took about 45 minutes at 425 d in the oven, and it turned out perfect. Plus, and I am assuming that this has to do with the longer baking time compared to the BBQ, the cedar flavour was perfectly evident in the flesh. It was so good, that I did another one for our supper last night.

Today, we have our annual New Years Day dinner at my SIL's where we do a huge Chinese feast!

Tomorrow, I start my diet!!! LOL

Happy New Year! We're doing our usual black-eyed peas today. I'll probably pick some cabbage from the garden to serve with it. And make cornbread, of course.

OOPS!!! Sorry I didn't know that about Jan. 1 being "everybody's" birthday, if a specific date isn't given. Oh well, Happy Birthday, whenever it is. :>) Mwoods, your statement about each year bringing "joy, laughter, and some tears" is so true. None of us ever knows what's ahead for us. But, as my DH says, "It's been a trip, but I wouldn't change any of it!"

Ours was utterly quiet, although not unpleasant :). Both kids were off doing their own NYE celebration so the house was nice and calm. We ate dinner, chatted, then he went to sleep early and I read for awhile. Boring? Maybe but also a moment to cherish being secure in our lives and with so much for which to be grateful. Thank you. As I recall we had a record high of 80 last Sunday (1 January). Tonight and tomorrow night (6 and 7 /January) will get down to 24 and 26, then back up into the 60/70s after that. The ground is always workable. The lows are very short in duration. The day temps normally warm everything back up. This is a great time to garden. Weeds grow slow, and no mosquitoes. It is a gardeners paradise from oct to march. April, May and June starts to warm up. July, August and Sept are too hot and too many bugs. In the recent past, I tried a second tomato season in late fall. Looking back, it makes no sense to try to grow in July, Aug, Sept when it is so effortless now. Of course, I can't grow tomatoes now. I am thinking I will just grow extra tomatoes in the normal season and freeze the extra. The ones I froze from last summer did real good in Sauces. I don't have a lot of time to can/make sauce to freeze, but I can always make time to quarter tomatoes and throw them in a bag in the freezer. The sweet white turnips, hakerie (name is close to that), are one of the lesser cold hardy varieties. They are very tastee, especially roasted with the carrots. I have a small patch of them and few remain. I will cover them. Everything else is very hardy and remains uncovered: Kale,broccoli, collards,onions, carrots and Lettuce. I expect some Lettuce losses, as there are many varieties. I expect half to survive just fine. I watered real good yesterday getting ready for the cold snap.

Quiet creative evening at home. Making black bean soup and bread today. Though now thinking about cornbread. Lol!

Wow, 2015, scary how fast 2014 went by.

It will be the year of downsizing for me starting with the freezers so I'll be looking for lots of recipes to help with this task.

Happy New Year! Hope 2015 is a great year for everyone.

We spent a quiet evening at home, also. Our 41st anniversary was on the 29th and we said that first year that we would spend our New Year's eves at home. We've done that every year but one. Today's meal will be smoked sausage with onions, potatoes, cabbage and carrots, black eyed peas and cornbread. Thinking of making an apple cobbler for dessert.

Happy New Year!

We always spend New Year's Eve at home, Amanda and Dave came to the new house and we had scalloped potatoes made with the last of the Christmas party ham. Makayla and I played Uno and Amanda sat in the Jacuzzi tub while Elery, Dave and Bud watched The Three Stooges.

Yes, we are party animals, LOL. Today we had Hoppin' John and greens, as well as some barbacoa and corn tortillas.

Tomorrow is Elery's birthday, so I have a cheesecake in the oven. Maybe we'll have duck...

New year's ve we had a BBQ rin of beef - hubbie was very intrepid going outin the cold and dark to cook it! Very nice. Out for a Chinese lunc yesterday and a long walk after. Lovely.
