I see a UFO! Over your right shoulder, right above your right shoulder. Then in the picture where you are absent it looks as though the UFO has moved straight up a little. Weird??!!

Hey I dunno what that is either. Maybe a bird, there were LOTS of crows hanging around the pull-outs. Yup it was deliciously COLD. The afternoon those shots were taken, it started snowing, after we were done. About three inches stuck, and the boys took some shots of the GC in the snow the next morning. Beautiful!

Were you on the North Rim? Brr. It's been years since I was at the GC, but would love to get back there. I wish it was within driving distance (although I never go to visit the places that ARE within driving distance).

Pam: south rim. The north rim is closed mid-October. Next trip, when we swing through Utah. Neither my parents nor DH's took us when we were kids. We figured it was time to share the joy. The drive was 500 miles...one way. Ten hours. In the car. With teenagers. Wasn't too bad, they had books and homework.

Fabulous Jessy! Did you go on the Skywalk?

Raymond reminds me frequently of my "what was I thinking" moments; one of which was when I am taking a video of the Canyon straight down. That is with camera to my eye, I inched closer and closer to the edge of the rim so I could get a shot of straight down! On the video you can hear my family yelling at me to STOP!! My toes were right at the edge when I came out of my trance! Kind of like when I was on the dock with my toes hanging over the edge to get a close up of the alligator's face as he swam towards me.

BTW, have you taken the boys to Mt Rushmore? We have to be in SD in July so I didn't want to be that close and not go.

Oh geez, well, I guess I won't be doing the Skywalk ever. Hey, you think they'd give me a discount because of my Native American heritage? LOL Nah, I didn't think so either, but I keep telling you that we're getting our country back one casino dollar at a time, now you can add the tourist traps!

I've been to the North Rim twice, I love it there. The lodge has a stone porch with a stone wall right on the edge of the canyon, you can sit in a chair with a glass of iced tea and watch the eagles fly over the canyon. There are even a couple of California Condors that have been sighted there (not by me!) and the Kaibab squirrel that is black with a white tail. It's very cool and there are cabins you can stay in, very rustic and right on the edge of the canyon too.

Cathy, when you go to Mt. Rushmore, be sure to see Crazy Horse too, it's very cool now they are working on the mountain again.

Annie, I have Indian blood on my dad's side and hadn't thought about a possible discount!

When researching my trip, I mapped Crazy Horse into my route as it's just south of MR. I'm definitely going to hit that even if I had to miss MR because of time limitations.

Well, Cathy, YOU ask for that discount and then let me know, will you? (grin)

Crazy Horse was pretty impressive, and they were having a Powwow while I was there, it was fun and the girls loved it.

My dream, and I'll probably do it, is to hike down to Phantom Ranch, stay a day or two, then hike back up. Might take me a week to get out....

I have an interest in seeing works by early women American architects. Julia Morgan's work at Hearst Castle and Asilomar in Monterey was impressive to behold this summer....I'd like to continue seeing what these pioneering women accomplished. Phantom Ranch, and much of the Grand Canyon rim structures, were designed by Mary Elizabeth Colter. K enuf herstory lessons.

Annie, If you had time for only one of the two do "you" think Crazy Horse would suffice to get a feel for the whole mountain carving thing? Every time I have remembered to check the webcam site to see the CH monument, it has been late at night and the webcam is dark! eMail to self: check webcam in the day time.

Jessy, Sound like fun. That's what I liked about Bryce Canyon, it's a different perspective -- the bottom of the canyon.

Cathy, if you want a feeling of what a massive piece of sculpture it is, you won't get close to Crazy Horse, they are still working and so there is a "demolition zone". You can get much closer to the faces at Rushmore.

Plus, Rushmore is a National Park and Crazy Horse is administered by a non-profit organization. That means no government money goes into Crazy Horse, so it's going slowly.

Crazy Horse was a hero to his people, caring for the ill and elderly, protecting the children, and he died from a knife in his back, ostensibly from a soldier at the fort where he went to talk about treaties between the U.S. Government and the Lakota.

The faces on Rushmore, though, were national figures, not simply ethnic ones.

Each has its own history and significance. Rushmore, though, has historical significance for everyone, not just the Native Americans. And walking down that walk of flags, with a flag from every state, is very cool!
