I don't know how to make a neat little text link like some of you do, so this thread will just be very picture-intense. Sorry if the pics are too big.

Today Zane and I went to an apple orchard with my two great aunts Edra and Hattie Mae and my great uncle Roy. Welcome to Wooden's Apple House!!!!!!!!

Wooden's has a lot of goodies...

...such as candies and jellies and preserves and sauces. They also have a few apples. : P

Zane had lots of fun with his great-great aunts and uncle. : )

Wooden's has a pie shop!

They sell traditional apple pies, apple dumplings, fried apple pies,

and apple scones, among other things. Zane and I shared an apple scone with our aunties.

100 trees is a good starting point, but I have not seen any discussion about rootstocks, cultural practice or the budget designed to hit your goals.. Each of these points merit careful consideration. The current "state of the art" in apple production seems to be some form of tall spindle with trees 3 or 4 feet apart in rows 12 or 13 feet apart. With a tree density of over 800 trees per acre, plan on spending around $15K per acre for this type of orchard not including the fence! Trees cost around $10 each and you have place the order at least one year or perhaps two years ahead to get what you want. Some nursery will custom bud any variety you choose it they do not have it in their catalog. The most useful information I have seen is in YouTube or other video from Umass or Cornell. Also, T Robinson (Cornell) has produced a lot of research explaining and advocating tall spindle systems. Last year I saw a new 100 acre planting of dwarf trees in Virginia which must have cost over a million dollars It was a very impressive site. The smart money in the orchard business from all over the country seems to be on board with tall spindle system Don't forget the berries and brambles. They fit perfect with your plan and cost a lot less to get started than tree fruit

OK, I'll lighten the load. I guess the same argument I made for not worrying about it could be made for not worrying about forgoing this year's crop. I have an M26 with a similar number of apples on it but several times the volume of canopy. As far as thinning when the apples are so small, according to an article in the "Pome News" the publication of the Home Orchard Society, thinning very early is more effective at preventing biennial bearing. Apparently seeds, even immature, release a hormone that inhibits formation of flower buds for next year. I've seen them recommend thinning at 1/2". I could have just thinned and then waited to bag, but it only took 15 minutes which is time I would have gladly spent with the tree anyway. Besides, last year I started bagging with just a handful and then I got distracted for the rest of the season by my vegetable garden and knee injury and never got around to doing the rest. I didn't want to miss this year too. I'll be curious to see which drop. I'll probably leave it as it is for 2 or 3 weeks and then take inventory and decide which others to remove. Don, I remember your recommendation of house brands for the bags. I just happened to have more name-brand bags than I could otherwise use in a couple of years thanks to Costco and the idea in the back of my mind that they could be used for bagging.

I've seen a few of these too. I don't know what they are, I just pick them off, the ones that don't catch the watchful eye of the bluebirds. I didn't look close enough to see any of those holes in the stem though. Wonder what those are for or what purpose they serve to the critter. Those critters are tasty though. Just kidding. Maybe to the bluebirds. I have bluebird boxes at opposite ends of the orchard fence. I love to sit on the porch and watch the bluebirds swoop down into the orchard and promptly return to their nest box where you hear the chicks start screaming in a begging chorus. Those bluebirds eat a lot of leaf munching critters.

Goldrush is available from many nuseries. I buy mine from Adams County Nursery. The reason they have not done well as a commercial variety is that the commercial growers have difficulty sizing them up- at least that's what I've read in the trades. Goldrush is actully 2 different apples- the one off the tree and the one out of storage. Out of a month or more of storage the texture is smoother and the flavor becomes sweeter. It is extremely rich. I suspect that this transition isn't as dramatic from fruit grown further south although Ed Fackler certainly says it is. He calls the apple "battery acid off the tree" and a world class sweet tart out of storage. Others, such as Jellyman, say they're quite sweet off the tree. Up here they are still quite tart off the tree when they turn from green to yellow in very late Oct. They are also strongly bienniel here (for me, anyway) although I'm told that a longer growing season provides them with enough energy for annual cropping.

As the day wore on it got much warmer. I changed Zane into lighter clothing and he sat a spell on the porch before we moved to our next destination. I also bought a bushel of apples!

What a fantastic day!

Zane is such a cutie and it's great that the G-Aunties and G-Uncle can still go out with you to enjoy day trips like that. Awesome pictures, but it is easier when you have such a great subject to shoot ;-)
