OK, for those complainers (LindaC! ;) here's another picture of Miss Sarah. She definitely has that Winston Churchill look going on sometimes but at least her eyes are open. (too often, I'm afraid) Last night we (well, mostly I) was up for several hours with her and was close to losing my mind!

She is far prettier than old Win! Yes, I know all the first mellow baby that lulls you into having number two! Alice was number two, had days and nights confused. I hope you get some rest. Nap when you can! Post more pictures, too!

One more important comment: I did NOT see a single plant infected with Rose Rosette Disease. We are talking about an open area with several thousand roses and not much else. North Dallas probably has the highest concentrations of RRD in the world (I see RRD on pretty much every Knock Out strip mall and public space, it is like a horror movie that I can’t help but keep looking at). So kudos to the management team at these gardens for keeping RRD at bay, I would guess their might be some culling, but nonetheless it’s under control, which is super encouraging. Now that I think about it, the absence of RRD has got to be one of the best parts of the visit.

Ingrid and Jin, I’m glad you like my lupine. I’ve waited 3 or 4 years for it to bloom! It’s meant to survive on our winter rains only, but because it was planted during our terrible drought, it concentrated on surviving instead of blooming. We didn’t get much rain this year, but I think last years rain allowed it to finally establish itself enough to bloom this year. There is something special about FINALLY seeing something blooming that you’ve waited years to see. Now I need to get up there and try to get Mel’s Heritage out of its way. The more I times I climb up that slope, the more “Javier damage” I see:( Small drought tolerant natives, meant to naturalize and help with erosion all gone. His “quick and impressive looking” weeding up there, was done by scraping the topsoil with a shovel. By doing that, he tore out small plants, and really only exposed the weed seeds to spring up with a vengeance! He also neatly cleaned up the shaded side of my slope, removing ALL the years of fallen leaves that I use for mulching. I know he was just cleaning up, but I didn’t see him doing it. Now it’s long gone. I do need him to come back once more, because he left my drip system half finished. I need him to come and be done with it! He hasn’t been paid for what he HAS done, so you’d think he’d be eager to wrap it up. Marlorena, thank you. I know you’re always interested in the unusual plants I grow. I’m one of those “plant snobs”, spending my pennies on the unusual things. My garden is an eclectic collection of roses, annuals, bulbs, South African plants, South American plants, and CA natives. Really I grow whatever catches my fancy, and will grow here without too much fuss. Ingrid will be shocked, but I even have a few thriving hostas and astilbes! They grow in the shade, where the water collects. My soil is heavy clay, so it holds water. In my defense, I planted these many years ago. I wasn’t thinking about water restrictions back then. They look nice right now, but disappear as soon as it gets to hot and dry. They always return the following spring, though. The fruit you see is loquat. It tastes ok, but has huge brown seeds that take up most of the center. The birds love it, but so do the roof rats! I have a phobia about those. I know it’s silly, but I change the channel if I see them on TV. Snakes don’t bother me. I don’t know what it is, but it is. Here’s a picture of the loquat tree. I’ll add more pictures after I finish my coffee. Lisa I might as well take a couple more, while I’m here. Excuse the gopher cages and the bareness around these. The cages are an absolute necessity, and will soon be hidden by the growing roses. This is a bed I work on a little bit almost every day, but it’s VERY slow going. Below is ‘Hommage a Soupert et Notting’ proliferating. This one is its first bloom. The rest of HaSeN’s buds don’t appear to have “that look” that the first one did. I was a bit worried about ‘Rev H. d’Ombrain, as he’s been slow to wake up from his move. He’s finally showing some life! I'm growing Sarah's Old-fashioned Black and Cherokee Trail of Tears too - in UK. If I'd realised how similar they are I would have kept more careful notes of the different growth patterns etc. I'm picking them dried at the moment. The pods of Sarah's dry lighter in colour here - Sarah's on the right and Cherokee on the left in the photo. The dried beans themselves are very similar size and colour here but the Sarah's are perhaps a little fatter and more torpedo shape and the Cherokee a little flatter. Sorry the seed photo isn't better quality. I think Cherokee is perhaps more prolific but I grew them in different circumstances so I'm not sure. It was great to find someone else is comparing these two beans. I wonder what the parentage is way back!

I should be sleeping...but instead I'm putzing around on here! I haven't done that in quite a while! :D

Linda...I want to take pictures of her feet but can't figure out the darned close up feature on my digital. It's supposed to do macro but hell if I can get it to work!

Barnmom, I don't think anyone has ever called my son "mellow." LOL(Just ask Chase and Stacy when we met them this summer!) He had his moments as a newborn, but I"m sure I've sufficiently blocked them out by now. Actually, he was usually all business at night time - would nurse 10 minutes per side, diaper change and back to bed. Sarah is a "one boob" girl and if she doesn't burp well enough, she promptly vomits it all back up on me. Niiice...

Phyllis, she's perfect, and perfectly beautiful too. Days and nights mixed up? I suggest James Bond. LOL

I can't tell you the number of nights Makayla and I were sitting in the living room at 3 or 4 a.m., watching James Bond movies while Amanda and David slept on the couch. (grin) Makayla loved the explosions, fires and general action.

It does help to have a family member who is a horrible insomniac...

I would settle for a non macro picture!
I found the cure for "daytimer disease"w as to bring the place where the baby sleeps ( bassinet, porta crib or even a blankie on the floor) into where the rest of the family is during non sleepy times and even for some daytime sleeps. Let her become aware of the fun going on during the day and don't sleep through it. And make the night time "wake time" as boring as possible....no TV no radio...and only enough light for mom to read by while she rocks the babe.
I learned to rock the crib with my foot while being about 9/10 ths asleep!
And remember....this too will pass and before you know it, she will be keeping you awake because she is out on the town with the highschool football hero.

Phyllis, by comparison, Daniel was a dream infant (later was another story!). He slept through the night at 4 months. Feedings were a do-able every couple of hours the first few weeks. Alice slept through the night at age 4 years and wanted to be fed every 1/2 hour as a tiny baby. She did the projectile vomit thing too. Such a treat at 2 am!

Sarah will settle down and sort out her days and nights. Alice would sleep through a bomb blast now! I loved those teeny baby days, no sleep and all.

She is such an adorable baby.

And yes, I still yearn for another one. I know how you feel right now. Even though I thought I knew what I was getting into with Zane, I was completely "shell shocked" when we brought him home. For a while he nursed every hour, day and night. It eventually let up to every two hours, but when he growth spurted his nursing went back to once an hour or so. That meant I was a zombie mom, I was up all the time with him. I not only got through it, I enjoyed a large part of it and I wouldn't trade those sleepless nights spent caring for a tiny baby for all the riches in this world.

I love that picture. She's so bright. It's definitely not what you want at 2am though.

My son was worse than my daughter. I put a twin bed in my daughters room and slept there when she was nursing every 1-2 hours. She would cry I would pick her up and nurse her and we frequently fell asleep together with me in a semi upright position and her still in my arms. It was easier than running across the house to her. Too bad I didn't think to do that with my son.

It should get better soon.

Oh your pretty little girl has a mind of her own ! Will get better-- promise . Enjoy her while she's mostly immobile-- soon enough you'll be chasing her down . She sure is bright & alert !
