Strelitzia in Our Garden Today (pics)

This is the time of the year when they are so spectacular. We have several clumps of them growing but we have to remember to go out and appreciate them when the flowers are fresh, so I was out in our garden with my camera this morning.

Strelitzia Reginae - Bird of Paradise Flower. Family: Musaceae

The little palm tree alongside has also just had a new inflorescence unfold. A lovely spray of pink strings of pearls.

Here's one large spray just bursting out of the encasing pod in June of this year.

They are beautiful when the pink strings of new seeds are seen together with the older seeds which have turned red.

The botanical name of this little tree originally from Australia is Archontophoenix Cunninghamiana.

The English name is Piccabeen Palm.

Sharon, those are beautiful pictures. I love Bird of Paradise and those palms are unusual but very pretty with the string of pearls hanging down.

Those palm trees are common in my neighborhood too, and I wish I had planted that instead of my {{gwi:1470932}}, which does not have nearly as nice flowers. My bird of paradise bloom later in the year and seem to peak around January, although the white giant ones bloom in the summer.

My {{gwi:1470933}} is blooming now, however, and I need to take a new picture of it when it fills out more. That picture is from four years ago, and the tree has grown a lot since then.

It looks like you have geraniums in your Strelitzia.

Man i wish I had flowers!! So glad everyone is enjoying the pictures. I know my husband will be very pleased to know how many people like the stand he built. It really is much better that it's simple, because the focus should be on the ball. Most of the commercial stands we saw were very ornate and would compete with the ball for attention. Just the luck of the draw on the indigo buntings. We don't do anything special, so some years we will have several or we may not see any at all. Last year when I was gone, my husband opened the blinds one day and he said the ground was covered in blue. A whole flock of buntings had arrived to feed. I was heartbroken not to see them and get pictures. By now. people who read my posts know I am a nut for blue, so Val, yes!!! I would love, love, love to have daylilies in blue. I am going to put up a new post, so there will be a blue-flowered plant on it. Avedon

Ron, thanks for telling us about the rebar - my husband said he never thought of that. It will be stronger - wont rust and way cheaper than the eight feet bamboo stakes I have been buying this year, thanks. Never ever knew or thought of what rootstocks are on any of our roses, never thought to ask or check. The ones that I have purchased are mostly from Pickerings and Hortico. I bet if I read the catalogues more carefully, they would tell me. But then right now it won't mean a thing. Though I have been growing roses for what seems like an eternity, I am learning so much from you guys, here. Soon, who knows, I may know the difference between all the root stocks. I do love living here. Today I had lunch sitting outdoors in The Orchid Garden.....just a 5 minute drive from our house....can't get much better than that....yes I feel very lucky! Gosh I could make a little room for you Iris in the laundry room if you don't mind sharing with a couple of cats LOL.

Lars I will have to go and see if the silk floss trees near our house are in bloom. There is a small municipal garden near the road going out of town where there is a plantation of several trees. I've walked up there in past years to photograph them and don't want to miss them this year if they're blooming now.
