Computer Problems

I've been having problems with my graphic card driver and my screen keeps shutting down and then giving me the 'blue screen of death'. Aaaaagh and then the computer shuts down.

My computer fixit man can't come until next week..darn...so further tutorials on ice for some days more.

1. Is the screen normal when you first turn on the computer?
2. When does it turn blue?
3. have you done virus scan?

Thank you for asking dcarch...oh yes we do virus scans regularly on both computers. Turns out the problem was that my graphics card was corrupted so our computer man has just replaced it with a newer and better model and although I'm still testing, it seems to run okay.

The blue screen of death came after the screen had frozen a few times while I was still trying to work. I tried to get into safe mode but my keyboard wouldn't respond to F8 on booting up.

But it looks like I'm up and running so I'm working on the next tutorial and hope to post it very soon.

Larry, thanks. And as you can see, I'm back. I finally found the "contact us" link on the bottom of the page and learned something. If you try to post 3 pics in 3 different posts one right after the other, the spam filter catches and blocks you. So for those of us too pc illiterate to post 3 pics at once, good to know. Or even if you post in different forums, they said leave 10 minutes between them. I think this sucks but I understand they have to filter out the spam.

LOL, Rosa - I had trouble setting up my iPad, too...I think I somehow bypassed the first setup screen. Took forever to figure out how to tell it I wasn't in Bermuda! :) They sure leave a lot of it up to you to figure out. I finally found the iPad user's guide on the Apple website. My mom keeps saying she wants to buy a new car. Her current car is a 1988 model (I think), and she hates both change and technology. I can't imagine trying to teach her about a new car with all the changes they've made since 1988! My brother got her either Dish TV or Direct TV one year. The guy came and installed all the stuff and left. Well, he may have given her the 2 minute training session they tend to give! LOL Anyway, she turned the TV on, her favorite channel wasn't at the right number, and she called them to cancel it and come get their equipment. They cancelled the service but no one ever came to get the dish and other stuff, so they are still there. She won't even let us unplug any of it because she's afraid her house will burn down or something. >sighsighDonna

I fear you still have some of the infections still lingering and that could very well be interfering with your installation. I would suggest going to LzD and having Corrine look at your logs she will be able to see if any of the infection is still there and how to remove it. She is great at this she goes step by step as slow as you need. You would not want to risk having infections on it at any rate. Analysis and Malware Removal that is the link to LzD where you can create your own post, you do need to register at the forum and they will email you back. I am there and Corrine will be there to help you. Let us know so we can be watching for you.

I would add one suggestion to this...be sure to active your computer cookies, Patti. I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago after resetting my computer resultant from a modem problem. I was in a hurry and didn't realize that resetting my browser also removed all of my acceptable "cookies". After tearing my hair out for about 15 minutes...trying to get rid of the green words...it suddenly dawned on me what the problem was. I reactivated the cookie for Garden Wed and all returned to normal. HTH Anne

Two possible problems:

1. some graphic cards get overheated. If yours have a heatsink (fin looking thing on top of the processor) cleaning the dust off will help.
2. dirty contacts. pull it out and plug it in again may help.

Thanks for the monumental tutorials. I may have a few tips to add after you are done.

Thanks dcarch. I know the insides are dusty, though we had a workshop deep cleaning not long ago. The new card is working fine. Not sure if there's a heatsink inside as I try to avoid getting in the way looking inside the box when the techie is working (lol). (I had a big heatsink on my amateur radio equipment when I was active, not that it helps my computer though.)

I'll be getting an upgrade in November which will include reformatting the drives and more memory so another cleaning will be included.

I'll also be adding a tips and tricks section to the last tutorial before I finish.
