The Ring (the best pictures I could find!)

OK, OK, so several people wanted to see The Ring. The one that Elery described as his "two hands holding your heart". My camera doesn't take close ups so well, and during the Michigan Run I forgot and Elery didn't bring his and, well, this is the best I could do:

I'm not much of a jewelry person, but even I know it's a lovely ring. Still, it was the analogy that meant the most.

oh Annie, even those pics show what a beautiful ring it is...and it could have been out of a gumball machine - like you said, it's the analogy. It's beautiful.

I think it's his love for you - coming forth from it - that makes it difficult to photograph - a bit blinding...:-)

That was a good question, and I searched the site to find out what they are made from with zero luck. They are translucent and the light prunes the roots, so not plastic, and they let air in, but you can see air holes are punched around the sides. I would guess they are made of some patented proprietary fabric, either fiberglass or a strong blend of fabrics, possibly nylon, silk? They have to be strong because they have handles to lift the containers. In the nursery photos they show, the containers do not show dirt leaching out, as would happen with cotton. Those pots stay white! I do know that they are very light weight and translucent, not made from landscape fabric like the smart pots. They do double duty. Light prune (roots like it dark), and air prune. I also like that option for the weed control cover because it also reduces evaporation, so you can water less. So what is your guess about what they are made from? Nylon? Silk? It has to be strong and translucent. I say Nylon. Silk is waaay to expensive!! I don't know. I've heard of people using motion activated sprinklers (I think hav-a-heart makes one reasonably cheap) but have never tried them myself. Sounds like it would work, but could be a nuisance if you get a lot of traffic on that sidewalk unless you aim it very well. Any idea which neighboring animal it is? If you are on good terms with the neighbor maybe you can deal with it that way. Hopefully someone else has better advice. Good luck!

The zone right under trees is very difficult to grow stuff in because the trees tend to suck up all the water and nutrients. I have seen where people build up a thick mulch and plant bulbs and things directly into the mulch, most often in large bowl shaped pots (think hanging baskets without the hanger). Under oaks I have had good success with potted houseplants like Swedish Ivy, sunk down into the moss and mulch, allowed to ramble around the shade. Same with Wandering Jew. You'd want to grow something fast like tropical houseplants. I've also seen pots of Caladiums sunk into the mulch. By keeping things in pots you don't have to water the tree when you water the bloomers. You do want to pull the mulch and top soil away from the zone closest to the tree trunk. Soil against the base of trees leads to all sorts of problems. No matter how big your ring of mulch/soil is the tree roots will quickly grow up into it (you'll be surprised). The dryer you keep the mulch the slower the tree will invade. Some people plant Azaleas or Gardenia bushes under the shade of pines but they place them out towards the outside edge.

I only checked Lowe's and Home Depot online and in store and they had nothing like just replacement rings. It's possible that there are so many different sizes and manufacturers that it would be impossible. I did not check at the electrical supply stores. I agree to the wisdom of keeping future options open by preserving the originals, but I've already started the process. My thinking is if it really looks bad with the Rustoleum Universal brushed nickel, I could just paint them while again. Worst case (costly) would be to change out all the recessed lights, but I hope it doesn't come to that. I've put a coat of Uma bonder on them after scuffing them up a bit with fine steel wool. My next step is elevating them with coins on cardboard and applying a thin coat in one direction. When it dries, I'll spray another thin coat up and down and then a third on a diagonal. Hoping for the best, not even going to think of the worst!
