I guess I wasn't really explicit, the knife came from Nancy and Kim, in case that wasn't clear. It's a wonderful gift, I love it.

Hey -- you're not supposed to give knives as gifts, so send a penny to Nancy and Kim so you've bought it.

Knives, scissors and all other types of utensils that are used for cutting things are not traditionally considered a good gift idea. Basically the idea of cutting or slicing things is does not promote good luck, or good karma. In fact, to the Chinese or in Latin America the gift of a knife as a gift would be interpreted as "cutting off a friendship (or relationship)." An extension to this idea is the use of cutting tools when opening gifts. So take care not to tie or wrap the gifts in such a way that cutting tools will be required.

What to do if you get a knife as a gift
The tables are turned. Its your wedding. Youre opening your gifts and you notice that someone has given you a set of knives.

Lets assume that you're positive the gift-giver didn't mean anything negative by giving you the knife as a gift, but youre still feeling uneasy about the whole deal. On one hand, you may need a great knife set, but on the other hand who wants bad luck from their wedding day? Legend has it that you can help reverse any bad luck from receiving this gift by giving the gift giver a penny (at least) for the knife. This, in effect, makes the gift a purchase!

However, anyone who wants to give me a Henckels or Wusthof knife should feel free to do so!

Yeah, yeah. I'm not at ALL superstitious, and all the bad things lately happened to me before I got that knife. (grin) Still, next time I visit Nancy and Kim, I'll try to remember to give them a penny, just for you!

Believe me, I know about the superstition about giving someone a knife! I'll collect that penny from Annie and Elery, one of these days. When Kim and I discussed what would be a good present, we thought about a knife and nothing else seemed better. They both like to cook, Annie is a CF friend and when I was looking the knives over and realized that that knife is called a salami knife, I had to get it. I remembered how they were getting into making sausages and I also thought about how I like it for slicing tomatoes. Annie always has lots of tomatoes. A true tomato knife has two sharp points on the end which I really don't like....dangerous! After checking out other things at the only kitchen store in my vicinity, the salami knife won.

Annie, being able to come to the party was special. You and Elery make such a great couple!! See you soon!

My grandmother, who didn't have an apparent superstitious bone in her body, was very strict about paying that penny for a knife gift.

I enjoyed seeing the pictures. Thank you for sharing. I didn't realize that about the knife but it's a great gift!:)

DD put that song on my IPod, "shortie got low, low, low, low, low", I must admit it's quite catchy although I had no clue there was a dance that went with it..... bend knees, extend arms, I'll try it later, lol......

Annie, all of the smiles tells me it was a fun reception & the cake is beautiful.

You've had some life changing events recently. I add my wishes to the rest that life settles down & gets back to a boring routine soon.

Mitch, I'd like to see that. (grin) Ashley tells me that everytime the song says "low", you have to go down lower, until you are down as low as you can without falling over. It's pretty fun to watch and see who can get lowest, sort of like limbo without the stick. LOLOL

Nancy, remind me about that penny when Elery and I come to visit you. One of your meals is well worth the drive!

I wish EVERYONE could have been there. It was very low key, lots of fun, lots of food and music. The DJ, who is a friend I've known for years, called it the "anti-reception". (snicker) When I called and said "you'll never believe this, but I got married again", her response was "OMG, you're sh*tting me!!" Ahem.

What a sweet couple you two made, particularly once the sugar dust settled.

You know, I'd never heard of a knife gift bringing bad luck. And being from Cuba --where we like our knives ;-Þ-- you'd think I would've known about it.

You and Elery both looked so happy, the guests looked happy, the cake was just beautiful, and the babies slept through the whole thing.
All in all, a perfect wedding reception for two, very deserving people. And AB, I sincerely wish for your married life to remain as sweet as ours has been.
May it never get boring for either of you!

Annie, I wish I could have been there. I think I would get along great with you and Ellery. The only thing that concerns me is that you didn't have any Ramones records at your reception. I think Blitzkieg Bop and a little hey hey lets go would have been appropriate. Best wishes.

James, no Ramones at the reception but I still own a nice sunburst Mosrite guitar. Yup, the one made famous by Johnny Ramone, LOL, and I can't even play a guitar!

See, we would get along just fine, come on up, The salmon are just starting to run, and the big 4 year olds are just now hitting the rivers. Only 10 miles from my house, too, and local guides are just starting to catch a few coho and some of those big chrome steelheads....
