I finally finished clearing up the last of the branches. I sawed them into more logs to add to the edging, but it's nice seeing the yard all cleaned up. :-) The sun moves through the bed in such a way that all the roses get hit with at least the minimum number of hours needed to grow well. I moved the cinder blocks to make an area for overwintering the roses that didn't get planted in the ground. After moving them into this space, I think I'll shorten the length of the "box" and stack them three-high. When the neighborhood leaves drop, I'll be collecting them to fill the spaces between them for added insulation. I trimmed more branches from these arbor vitae, and planted all but one of the roses going here. On the far left is 'Rosa moschata' which didn't go in the ground yet because I'm not sure if it will get enough sun. I keep track of when the shadow of the house falls on it, and it seems to be getting full-sun from about an hour after sunrise until about noon. Thereafter, it's in bright-shade. I might just end up moving the white azalea from the front to this spot. But the rest of them, going left to right, are "Sissinghurst Castle", 'Tricolore de Flandre', 'Tuscany Superb', and the musk-seedling 'Reverend Seidel'. In the green wheelbarrow you see the thin pieces of the last of the tree branches. On the ground to the right of the BBQ is the last of the thick pieces, which I'll be adding to the log edging. A close-up of a section of the log-edging. Right now, it's fairly secure, but I'll be putting a lot of long screws into the pieces to hold it in place better. And there's lots of nooks and crannies between the pieces. I started pouring peat moss in there, and will eventually stick low-growing sedums and sempervivums into the crevices. It's hard to get good shots with the way the sun and shadows are hitting the yard right now, but here's another shot of the bed. Another shot of the yard. Re-seeding the "lawn" will be one of next year's projects. Another shot of the bed. I'm going to be throwing down mulch and manure to eventually reach the height of the log-edging, making this a somewhat raised-bed. The bed tapers to a narrow end where the garage and pavement meet the "lawn", and I planted only three roses here. On the far left, with room to spread but contained from taking over, is 'Indigo', which came as one of a few suckers from a garden-forum member. To its right is 'Honorine de Brabant', a dark pink and white striped Bourbon. In the corner on the right (look for the white name tag, since the plant is really small now), is "Sophie's Perpetual". I left room by the window because (for now) it's the only way into the garage -- the door must be opened from the inside. And in the corner by the fence, with a few branches forming a make-shift tripod, is "Secret Garden Musk Climber" which is really the end-cap of the back Gallica bed. The Gallica bed is against the fence and behind the railroad ties. In front of it, and behind the log-edging, is a row of shorter repeat-flowering roses -- to the right of "Sophie's Perpetual" is 'Clotilde Soupert', then 'The Prince', then 'Golden Buddha', then 'Prospero', with 'Souvenir de la Malmaison' in the corner by the stones, and 'Souvenir de Victor Landeau' sprawling out to the right and in front of it. If you're interested in going through ALL the pics of the yard, beginning last year before I did anything, I put them all in an album on Photobucket. Right now, it's 277 pics (with descriptions), including a lot of "rose inventory" shots, but it's fun to flip through. Thanks, everyone! The soil here is way different than what I'm used to. I've always had a clay soil (or fill dirt in some cases). Here I have very sandy soil. There was already a garden spot (not in use when I purchased the place), so, I just used that spot. I tilled in a bunch of leaves this weekend. I've been told that the previous owner did the same thing. By next year, I'll have a compost pile set up. :-) I feel like I got pretty lucky with my new place. I had been looking for a long while, and this one popped up. There was another offer on it (in less than a week on the market), but, that fell through and I jumped on it. Now I just have to sell the old place. The Brain Strains had quite a bit of variety in shape, but, I think that pic represents the majority. I got the seeds from Romy6. He warned me of the pod variations up front. I just wanted the wrinkly / bumpy texture, I'm happy with them. :-)

Re: Photo 2: The simplest thing is to put in a piece of XPS, and tape over it with builders tape. **Yea but I would be foaming at some point and thought it might be easier to give a shot there in each hole...though I guess I'd have to cut the foam flush and it would make a mess so I think I like your idea better...is that just duct tape you refer too? I do have foam adhesive...could just dab some on the back and stick it in...? I thought I would need the foam adhesive to hold the panels in place while attached them but have found it was not necesary. Re: Photo 3: looks like lots of room for drywall over the foam. **All foam will be drywalled over EXCEPT the last 9 feet (after the water meter coming towards you for 9 feet...not eally shown...I am thinking I will frame here, add some more insulation and some outlets...this is actually the tv area. Re: Bottom pic: What really works well there is acoustical caulking--a black non-skimming caulk. **Ok, I had the canned foam but was not sure how easy it would be to use here so I figured caulk. I will look for the stuff you describe....do you have a brand or do I just look for it in the paint aisle? Likley I should use it on the sill around the perimeter anyway right???....they had fg hanging out of there...I pulled it out. FYI: My intent is to cover this with drywall..somehow....thats my other issue, the area between the stair striger and wall. I am still thinking about that. I may not be able to get the drywall below to match with the drywall already in place above....a job for later though! Re: I can't help you with your questions, but what are you doing with the rim joist area? THIS IS A AN AREA WHERE I HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION! **To be honest, if you are talking about the area above the XPS, there is fg in there now. Where I have removed the fg it has been pretty airtight unless a pipe or something is there. I will foam that with a can. I guess I will either use my cutoff XPS pieces to make inserts in here then shove the fg back in front of it....IS THAT UP TO CODE?---a dropped ceiling will eventuallly be in place. If not I likely will just put the fg back in place. PS: looks like pic 1 did not need to be rortated 90 degrees!

Your pictures remind me of sewing I once did to use up fabric I had accumulated. Every winter I made stacks of shorts and t-shirts in varying children's sizes. In the Spring I gave them to a nun who worked in a very poor section of Cincinnati. She would distribute them to families who needed them. In later years I made all sorts of pajamas for the St. Vincent hotel which took in homeless people, especially families . I double stitched everything as I knew they would be washed every day. Once in a while I used a pattern for a really pretty little girl's nightie and always hoped it gave a tot a happy night.

I've just returned from Canada where I saw how my 9 year old granddaughter adored to be around her 22 year old cousin whom she sees only once or twice a year. They giggled around, painting nails and doing hair.
Grandkids are such a treasure aren't they!

Thanks all,
I have been crazy busy getting our NY home ready to put on the market and had a fabulous (if exhausting) break being grandma to those cuties.

I thank Barnmom for offering to post for me in my time crunch.

We had lot of fun this week. I made a Mexican theme birthday party for DH.
Actually, I found a wonderful cake recipe for a Mexican Chocolate Cake that I'll post separately.

Bubbe, I think the grandkids take precedence over the Forum, that's a perfect reason to be gone. The kids aren't always here, but we are, we'll just wait.

Oh Renee, your grandchildren are adorable. Some grandmothers are more special than others and I can just imagine what a great "Bubbe" you are. There is no one I miss more than my grandmother. Your grandkids are so luck that you spend so much time with them.

Ann and everyone,

I adored my grandma; my mother's mom. She was so capable, so talented and willing, creative. She was the domestic model for me growing up with a working mom. Grandma did work in her life, by necessity, but by the time my sister and I were here, she no longer held any outside positions. I loved being with her, couldn't do enough for her or with her. I learned to knit, crochet, cook, garden, make home-made greeting cards. She always made time.

I think the least that I can do to honor her and my grandkids is to be accessible and loving. Like so many of you, I'll play, run, cook, bake, do arts and crafts, and just sit and listen.

You are so correct Annie, childhood is so short.

Thank you all for being there to share and to welcome me back from my absences.

I look forward to photos of your Granddaughter.

I'm laughing because when I spoke with the decorator for our new digs, I told her that with 7 grandkids and one DD still breeding, every surface has to be cleanable. She agreed that "for the next ten years there will be puke, spills, etc." I quipped, "then I'll start to leak." :)

They are all very beautiful, and I'm a bit surprised at how similar their hair colors are. We have some red hair in my family, but it shows up in all different shades. Your family has a very beautiful shade that reminds me of one of my cousins.

The hair color does appear very similar in the light and true, all but Gabrielle have the same hue. Melissa, the twin on the extreme right, has the reddest hair like her mother, regardless of light.

I'd describe most of the kids as having honey-colored hair.
