County Fair Winners

Some of you know that I let my great niece and nephews help in the garden, and that I help them with their annual county fair entries.

This year Noah entered herbs, he had basil, dill, cilantro, parsley and sage. His sister, Savannah, entered rhubarb. They each got 4 H ribbons. All 4H entries get ribbons, but they're proud just the same:

Dylan and I made root beer jelly for his entry. (Yes, that's my fencing assistant and general all round farm hand) He won a blue ribbon, first prize for jellies in his age group!

Amanda entered a rhubarb pie, using Grandma's recipe. Another blue ribbon for pies and a Grand Champion ribbon for baked goods:

With or without the ribbons they'd all be winners. You have a clan there, Annie.

I admire the work ethic and determination of your family. So many kids today are caught up in what they want, not what they can do. Yours demonstates such positive influences.

it's a wolf...it's in sheep's clothing. OMG, Sheila. That is the first tea-spitting comment I've heard on this forum in a looooooooong time. Good one. Yes, I think Lilo is right. There is big business in keeping animal coats pristeen for shows and fairs. Horses have protective coats as well. There is a horse farm down the road, and the owners put heavy coats on their show horses in cold weather. Not to keep them warm, but to keep the winter coat from growing in. Even chickens get shampooed and blow dried for fairs. My DD used to make a little pocket money taking beauty shots of animals after their grooms, because if you put an animal out to stud, their pictures usually are in a portfolio and the prospective clients want to see them, along with a pedigree chart. Most of the kids/families showing animals at 4-H have cleaner animals than themselves, as many sleep right in the stock trailors. LOL. Our fair hasn't hit yet. Sometime this month, is all I know. MY DH used to go to the hog showings, to purchase winners for his company. Local support of kids who show is pretty good.As you might suspect, the livestock is my fav part of the fair, and I like the canning and veggie displays and quilting/sewing contests.

It would be nice if we had actual tests to determine parentage. You can see how much we disagree on this forum so someone takes a kaneohe sunrise and sells it as a Jeannie jr and that person sells cuttings, etc. For example, I have seen many candy stripes and all have had very long, thin multi-colored petals. The colors are fairly bright with a red/pink stripe on one side of the petal and then yellow fading to white on the other side. Even the big dealers confuse me. Exotic has sold what looks like a minature candy stripe as a lei rainbow whereas other dealers sell a Nebel's rainbow as the lei rainbow. What is the truth? Bill Sold as a lei rainbow but looks like a mini candy stripe: What is most commonly sold by others as a lei rainbow (aka Nebel's)

Nice. Congrats...open class is hard. Sorry Bud couldn't enter his garlic. Always sad to see fair departments dwindle. Baking, photography, quilts and flowers (esp. dahlias) are the biggies here...lots of competition. And jam...lots of jam. Good for you for getting more competition going. I remember winning champion canner (or whatever they called it at the time) because they used a point system and I had the most blues, but only because I entered the most - nine jars. Hollow victory. I'm not entering any preserved food this year...they conned me into judging.

Are you SURE you want that recipe, Jessica? It's root beer, sugar, lemon and SureJell. It tastes just like root beer and the kids eat it on toast. It might be OK in thumbprint cookies, I suppose, and it was unique. LOL

I'm telling you, teotiki, that kid can outwork at least half of the grown men in the family, and wear me into the ground. He'll work all day for $5 and be happy for the company, especially if he gets to drive something.

Their father is useless and their mother is gone, but the kids are still pretty good.

Ohmigosh, Annie! What terrific achievements! I'm sure they are proud! I agree, it is so nice to see kids doing something other than TV! All the kids are very sweet-looking...but I love Savannah"s eyes. And, wow! Amanda gets prettier by the minute. Every picture I see of her is prettier than the last!
