How we beat the heat for a day...

We headed for Stinson Beach on Sunday. it was wonderful! The black dog is Foster, he found us at the beach when Alice took out the Chuck-it. Total ball hog, that dog! Snowy isn't very assertive about fetching, so it worked out fine.

Alice just got her braces off! She is thrilled!

They're both gorgeous! Alice's teeth are so nice and straight. I remember when my boys had their braces off. They were a couple of snaggletooths to begin.

Ahhh. That beach look so inviting. I just got back from a walk in the heat and humidity. I am dripping. Wish I could just jump right into your picture.

A trick I started using a while back was to do the double potting method. I use some cheap large mexican made pots that I partially fill with cheap mulch on bottom and set my 5 to 10 gallon black pots in them and then fill more mulch around the extra area left between which was usually about 2 inches on all sides. This created shade and insulation from extremes of cold or heat and also was better looking for my wife than my standard black pots. A win-win. Helped quite a bit in overall performance and less BER on the maters. The watering stayed more uniform and show much less drooping during the hottest part of the day when the tomatoes have a hard time taking up as much water as they transpire. I blister my feet on the deck in summer if I don't have flip-flops on and so I knew I needed to create a better situation for my potted plants than I had done. Happy Growing David

Being a wimp is a matter of degree. Once outside weather is unsuitable, they have to come inside. My mother used to grow in Calgary which routinely goes down to -40F every January. I know a grower who ships to Anchorage Alaska every summer. For some reason he does not ship there in the winter. Once they are inside, you create a artificial environment. The real curve ball comes when you live in a climate which is usually suitable outside and then mother nature lets you know that she is a b---. I remember getting my morning newspaper 6 or 7 years ago, seeing ice covering the car windows and walking over crunchy frozen grass with temps around 20F. I'm moving to California I announced, then I realized that I had already moved to California. What is a routine event in most of the country becomes a catastrophe when you are not prepared and have no provisions in place to deal with it. We all lost plants during that cold spell, Santa Barbara Orchid Estates lost 20% of their stock. Carry on campers, your present troubles will make you thankful for the normal state of affairs. Nick

Starting Polebeans Indoors to Beat the Heat

"...Does the soil have to be 60 degrees F to plant polebean starts or could it be 50 degrees?" -Roamwhereiwant2 Personally, I would recommend a soil temp of 70-80 degrees for beans. Less than that lengthens germination time, and can increase the chance of rot. Fortunately, the ambient in-home temperature of around 70 degrees falls in this range. I also recommend the use of sterile soil mix for starting beans, and sterile water if possible. Ditto on Keith's comments. Because Spring conditions often delay planting here & I generally grow pole beans for dry seed, I use a lot of bean transplants. This overcomes possible germination issues in older seed, lets me start seed on time regardless of outdoor soil conditions, and guarantees a better stand in the row. It also guarantees me at least some harvest from beans which would otherwise be "iffy" for me because of a long DTM. Roam, what are the recommended planting dates for beans in your region? In pushing your beans further back from hot weather, are you trying to overcome cool soil issues as well? I couldn't find a planting guide on the U of G Extension, other than for soybeans, which require similar soil temps for germination. Once beans are germinated & have their first set of leaves, they can take cooler soil temps than would be required for the seed. You can leave them in peat pots a little longer than 2 weeks, but they must be placed in direct sunlight until transplant. When the first true leaf is fully grown, they should be transplanted as soon as possible. Much beyond that will result in some degree of stunting. You can minimize stunting & transplant shock by placing sand in the bottom of the tray holding the pots. This allows the tap roots to grow through the sand, rather than be air pruned. These extra roots can be pulled gently from the sand at time of transplant. If handled carefully & kept from drying, these extra roots get the plants off to a good start. Be sure to bury as much of the peat pot as possible during transplant, and tear off any parts which might protrude above ground. Any part of the pot which is exposed to the air will wick moisture away from the roots below, and can cause the pot to separate from the soil. When planning your start date, allow 7-10 days for bean germination (at 70 degrees) and 3-5 days for germination of cowpeas. Not sure if it would be necessary to start the peas in pots, though; they should be able to take the heat. There is a Master Gardener program in the Georgia Extension. If there is one near you, they might be able to give you better info for your specific area, such as recommended seed starting dates.

I'm surprised to read all these postings talking about rain. It's been bone dry where I'm at--my yard (grass) is brown and crispy and even with faithful watering (as much as I can afford-I'm afraid to see what my water bill is going to be) on my part, all of my plants/shrubs/trees are showing signs of stress from the heat and lack of rain. I've been getting up early (like 5 am) on the weekends to try to beat the heat and work out in my garden--by 11 am, it's too hot to do anything. What I can't figure out is with the lack of water (everything is drying up), just where the heck are all these mosquitoes coming from? And slugs....I've never had problems with slugs before...jiminey crickets!-I'd figure with the heat and lack of moisture they'd just shrivel and dry up. We actually got some rain this morning, but I fear it may be too little too late.... It's depressing, I live all year for summer and my garden, and after enduring months of snow and cold only to have a summer so hot and so dry that it makes me sad to look out and see how bad and unhappy my plants/shrubs/trees are...and there's so little I can do about it.

Gina, I found this beach online. There are only a couple of off-leash places up here. This was one. Lots of leash beaches, though.

The last time I was in Clifornia we stayed in a condo right there by the train exchange in Del Mar. I couldn't wait to wake up every morning and watch the surfers and hear the passenger train go by! We really need to go back! Beautiful City.

That is the covered bridge at Knight's Bridge, CA. It's in the foothills about an hour from here. Here is the scoop:

"At 355 feet, Knights Ferry is the longest covered bridge in California; the ninth longest in the nation; and the longest authentic covered bridge west of the Mississippi. The bridge replaced a ferry service established in 1848 by Dr. William Knight. Built in 1864, the bridge crosses the river at the site of the ruins of the old Locke grist mill. Not far from the bridge, Native American Indians ground their corn in mortar holes in the rocks.

Weakened by an overweight truck, the bridge was closed to vehicular traffic in 1981. Restored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, it has been incorporated into the Knights Ferry Recreation Area on the Stanislaus River. You may want to pack a picnic and spend the afternoon sunbathing on a large river rock; camping facilities are nearby."

For the past few years we have had Thanksgiving dinner at an old resort hotel and then taken a long hike around the ruins and the river. The place has changed hands a few times and seems to be closed except for weddings, etc. Next year we will have to find another place to dine and climb around. Maybe Yosemite or the Columbia Hotel. The kids are ready for new sites anyway. They feel as though they have thoroughly examined the bridge at this point!

Daniel and Alice are not twins, but they are close together, 20 months apart.
