Photoshop Tools and Tricks

As I may have mentioned, I got Photoshop at a great price when I was taking a free class last year. However, it is the Mac version, and I've had no energy to learn this at night after being on the pc computer all day at work. I'd rather cook. ;-)

But when Monique said she'd do some lessons, I thought I'd include this bit which I found by accident tonight.

Thanks for starting this Maureen and for posting the link.

Monique, SharonCB and anyone else, I hope youÂll post some tips for adding text. I have Photoshop5 rarely used, Paint never used, and Microsoft Digital Image . If the FXfoto program works well, IÂm curious about that too.

OK...

I'll start the ball rolling with a little tutorial on how to add text in PAINT, which is the simplest of all programs. As this is a Photoshop thread, I'll start a new one just for PAINT with easy instructions and will handle any questions from there. :-)

I zoom it up a little, not too much, use the magic wand and select the red, play with the tolerance until I get the entire area I want selected (marching ants more or less circular around the spot). Then I hold down the plus key and repeat with the other eye. Then I Select>Feather by about 2 pixels. Then I use Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation, choose the red channel in the drop down menu, adjust the sliders on the bottom to pick up all the reddish hues in the selected areas, then turn down the saturation until the red is gone. If it looks washed out, turn the lightness slider to darker. It's easy once you've done it a couple of times and amazingly precise. For large prints, you may have to paint back in the natural eye color, but for 4X6 prints, little flaws don't show. I have done it the tedious way by zooming up and painting pixels, too much trouble unless you've got a real mess.

I like the newest (CS3) which I just ordered (reordered) and expect to have in a day or so. There's a great book (with disks) called Adobe Photoshop CS3 Classroom in a Book which I'd highly recommend (you can get this on the adobe website for about $50). I'm not trying to push anything on you...but if you're at all interested I was going to put an Adobe Creative Suite Design Premium ($1799 on the Adobe site) on ebay soon. It's never been used. I paid $1500 for it (student discount) but they were supposed to send me a PC version and they sent a Mac. My return period is over (we had to leave to spend a couple of months in the hospital with DS). Anyhoo, really I'm not pushing, but if you want it I was going to list it at $500 plus shipping which is cheaper than just the basic CS3 photoshop I purchased (though you might be able to beat that price for just photoshop on ebay...I don't know). If you want it, let me know. Whatever you get :) I'd definately recommend that book. I think they have it for prior versions of adobe as well. It was the textbook for the class I took and it really helps you walk though the basic tools. You learn enough in the first couple chapters to shave 20lbs off your photo's in a heartbeat heh heh

Hi squirrel, I have their clearance page saved as a favorite on my computer so I remember to look for deals! creekylis, I have thought of doing a faux window! I keep going back to real windows, too. If they are the same windows that I have on the house they can't be anymore of an intruder risk, right? As far as seeing in to see if my car is there....My big garage door has windows. (No reason for them to risk going to the back of the house.) I do need to get beware of dog signs for my gates. Maybe ideamom can whip up some pretty ones.

That's OK, Urlee. Our URL is changing next year, so I'm on hold until we find out what it will be; otherwise, we'd just have to redirect. Last year, I think I changed the canvas color to black - or maybe created a new document with a black canvas - then copied it. I'm going to try to recreate that. Thanks!

No particular tips, but this is a site I frequent when I need to do something special.

Since a lot of us are into photography, it should come on on the Photography page.

Here's another site I like, Retouch Pro.

Some of you have received greeting cards over the years I've created out of photographs, using some of the tips learned at this site.

When I have time (ha!) I would love to experiment with this more. I've thought of buying Paint, as I hear it is a good companion to Photoshop. Maybe when I retire. :)

BTW 'Paint' is part of Windows and doesn't cost anything extra as far as I know.

Whoops, not Paint. I was thinking of Painter.

Then I'll need a new Wacom Tablet to go with it. :)
