Wow! Barnmom, your little Alice has grown up hasn't she! You must be so proud of her. She is just a beautiful young lady. I haven't seen a picture of her in a long time. I'm glad she does scrape off the mud occasionally. BTW - what was the occasion?

Growing up in CT, I enjoyed picking wineberries, which my brother and I called "red blackberries" (not sure why...maybe my grandmother called them that?). Last spring when I finally got a house with a yard, I saw (lots of) them again and finally discovered their real name. While productive, I don't think that they beat cultivated red raspberries in productivity or flavor and they are definitely smaller. The Autumn Britten I put in were much tastier. But both me and my kids stripped the wineberries as soon as they turned red (around July 1st last year), anxiously waiting for the rest to ripen. They do have a bit of residue though which leaves your hands greasy/sticky. The wineberries also have some truly nasty thorns. Late in the summer I dug up half a dozen for my brother's yard ("that'll keep those neighborhood kids from cutting across my lawn..."). He may have more than he bargains for soon though, as they spread like crazy. I'm finding them everywhere in my yard, and I have a hard time bringing myself to destroy berry bushes...

Used to have a great Scout 1/2 ton truck. Broke the accelerator cable in no-man's land and was able to rig a wire from the carburetor which we pulled to make the thing take us home. It was better at accelerating than the opposite, so sudden stops were accomplished by shutting the engine off. With today's rolling computers, you could do none of that. During my motor homing days we had a big Blue Bird which had a 150 gallon diesel fuel tank. On the way home from the desert we stopped at a repair place were we dropped of the Scout on the way in and hooked it up. As I was under the rear I noticed a leak from the fuel tank which we just filled. Small drip from the water sensor. I envisioned having to drain this and dismantle it to weld the thing. I asked the owner how you fixed something like this in Mexico. He laughed and then cracked his lunch pail and took out a banana. He and I shared the banana as he crawled under the motor home and rubbed the banana peel onto the leak. Eventually it stopped. 10 years later we sold the thing, banana peel and all. Never did get it welded. Then I had a Mercedes which was hit by a flying piece of wood on the passenger mirror. It knocked out the glass but did little other damage. Tried to get a new glass from the Mercedes place. They will only sell you the whole mirror for close to $500!! Found a mirror glass on the after market for $35 and installed it only to find that it flopped around as a small piece of plastic broke which keeps it steady. Probably costs less than a dollar, try to convince the a---s at the Mercedes place to give you one of these. Off to Alameda street which looks like downtown Tijuana and again asked a guy there how you fix this in Mexico. He filled the cavity behind the glass with silicon gel, had me sit in the driver seat and fixed the mirror so it was perfect for me. Held it in place with some tape and told me to take the tape off the next day. Cost: $15.00. When I sold the car, I told them that the motor to change position of the mirror was not working, I imagine the face of someone trying to take that thing apart to fix it. Di..you've got that man/woman work thing down to an art and obviously have created your own space in a male dominated workplace. I think it takes awhile to figure it all out,but you have. I worked in the same type of situation for years,but dealing with musicians/luthiers,the vast majority being male since this was the Celtic,Folk,and Bluegrass genre. So many great memories and funny stories and lots of tip toeing around when trying to tell a guy he had the wrong finish on his mandolin and needed to strip it and do it again,or gently trying to show a novice guitar builder that the spacing was off on his bridge. What do women know anyway? Then there was a guy who had an awful buildup of residue on his banjo hardware and I told him to soak his nuts in vinegar for a little while. Oh those were the days.

Reading these threads always makes me appreciate the school system I attended way back when. When I was in Junior High everyone, both boys & girls, had to take shop (woodworking) and home ec. (cooking & sewing). It was called "unified arts" back then (around 1959 - 1960). In shop I remember making a box & using the miter saw & a cutting board shaped like a fish that involved using the jigsaw. Cooking class was mainly baking & making breakfast & for years when I'd make a big breakfast of eggs, bacon, etc. I'd call it a Mrs. Hermann breakfast after the name of the home ec teacher. Sewing was a little different for boys vs. girls. The girls made skirts while the boys, I think made shop aprons. Many of the boys were much better at manipulating the Singer sewing machines than I was. Once I got to high school I avoided home ec like the plague. LOL! I was going to be a career woman & I figured (probably from watching those old Doris Day movies) that I'd hire someone to do the daily tasks for me - more fool I. I think that home ec has more or less disappeared from most h.s. curriculums, although given the popularity of celebrity chefs & cooking shows, perhaps it's lingering out there under another name?

Thank you. She is smart and sweet (mostly) too. Has a bad case of eighth-grader-itis. But she will be humbled come September when she is a HS freshman!

She certainly has grown up but I still see some little girl in her. I like her outfit, not too grown up but grown up, just enough to be special. She looks very poised, any modeling aspirations?

Wow, Eileen, she HAS grown up, hasn't she? Last I remember, she was a little blonde girl on a pony, now she's a beautiful young lady.

Just goes to show you what good a little barn mud will do for a girl!

Alice looks deceptively tall because she is so slim. She is only about 5'-3". I toyed with the notion of modeling when she was little, 4-6, but she had no interest! And I'm no stage mom.

She chose all her clothes on her own, including the pearls and clutch. I thought the shoes seemed a little "matronly" but they were what she wanted.

I think the shoes work perfectly. They don't look matronly to me, but they do add an air of sophistication.

The dance was a fun time, she danced a lot with her girlfriends and with a few boys. She has a nice little group of good friends that she does everything with. There are five of them, all nice girls, who have been a unit since 6th grade.

Tomorrow is her graduation ceremony. She tried to pout a bit and hoped I might spring for another dress for graduation (to be covered with a gown!). Mmmm, NO! This one will likely not ever get another wearing after tomorrow as it is!

Thank you for all your kind words. She is a sweet, smart child. I lucked out!
